‘. Those By-Elections

The inconsistent attitude of the local Iliberal newspaper campaign

against the Bennett Governlnent 15 well illustrated in its comments up‘ on the Labor victory achieved in the by-election in East Humllton- All along, the Liberal press has been claiming that Ontario industrial centres such as Hamilton have bene- flted under the Conservative tarifl policy at the expense of agricultural sections of the country. This class propaganda was used frequently in the provincial election campaign. It ‘was contended that the Bennett Government had been legislating wholly in the interests of the big manufacturing concerns, and there is no centre in Canada so dependent upon manufacturing as Hamilton, Ontario. Why. then, was the Con- servative candidate defeated in that riding? The Liberal organ says it was due to “a strong uildercurrent of revolt against Toryism in On- tario." It is unnecessary to point out that there would be no such under- current if, as the Liberal press has alleged, the rest of Canada was be- ing exploited in the interests of manufacturing Ontario. The Toronto Globe, which, as a Liberal newspaper naturally makes the most of the Conservative defeat in East Hamilton, has also some- thing to say about the Liberal defeat in Three Rivers. Coming lrom the leading exponent of Liber- tlism in Eastern Canada, its state- inent is highly significant. It says:

"Following the defeat of the Liberals in Prince Edward Island and on the eve of a general elec- tion in Quebec, the Three Rivers verdict carries all ominous warn- ing to the Liberal Party. A thor- oughgoing house-cleaning is essen- tial if the jizlrty is to regain the confidence of the rank and file."

Reverting again the East Hamil- ton results, there is another factor which must have struck every ob-

server. That is the fact that the Liberal party had not the courage to place a candidate in the constit- uency. It was probably deterred from doing so by the revelations in the Beauharnois affair. In this con- nection the Toronto Mail and Em- pire offers the suggestion that if the managers of the Liberal party ire wise they will let no other con- stituency go by default. The Liberal party may be in need of reorganiza- tion from top to bottom, but its re- formation will not be expedited by shunning political battle-

British institu- tions are built upon the principle that the Government and the Op- position shall consist of two broad- iy-based parties, embracing all the various elements of the popula- tion. This is an ideal to which this young Dominion should ad- ihere if it wishes to realize its vast possibilities, and to which it will adhere if the Liberals will only clean house. In one or other of the two old parties properly conducted there is plenty of room for full representation of both ur- ban wage-earners and agricultur- fsts. It is in one or other of these parties that they can do most good for the country and for themselves."

Premier Taschereau has stated that the wave of Communism which has been sweeping the world will break itself on the rocks of the shores of Quebec. It is time, the Gazette suggests, that a stand no less definite should be taken by the Dominion, and that it be followed, whenever just cause is given, by prompt and effective action. East Hamilton is no more a loss to the Government than it is a warning to the people of Canada.

The Northern Flight

The United States newspapers that are making so great a. fuss about Lindberglrs airship voyage across Northern Canada, says all exchange, may be excused became they may not know much about the matter. The Canadian newspapers that have become hysterical over the trip, however, have much loss excuse. To several Canadian airmen the country through which Mr. Lindbergh is said to be making his epoch-making light is like a tale that has been told. Canadian all‘- men have flown over this barren land, across the wooded stretches; over the rocks and across the wide water stretches. They have mapped the country and charted the route. Without calling themselves heroes, or thinking much about it, except as part of the day's routine, they have made easy the ‘way for Lindbergh and others to follow- In his present air voyage Mr. Lindbergh is follow- ing a trail blazed by Brittshers, just as he did on the air voyage across the seas when he followed the course travelled a decade before by Alcock and Brown. '

The first husband of Josephine, Napoleon's consort, was a Beauhar- nois, a member of the very family‘ which gave its name to a Quebec, county, to a. picturesque little town on the St. Lawrence and to two can- als, the old one, built in 1845 and long disused, and the new one now under construction. Canada, fn the days of the French regime, knew two Beauharnois, Charles, Marquis de Beauharnois, who was governor from 1726 to 1746. and his elder brother, Francois, Ba- ron de Beauvilie, intendant from 1702 to 1705.
