We muat doubtless look to the Jews for the origin of godfathers and godmothers. The use of them in the primitive cburch is 80 early that it is not easy to fixa time for their beginning. Some of the most ancient fathers make mention of them, and through all the successive ages after wards we find the use of them continued without any interruption. By a constitu- tion of Edmund, Archbishop of Canter- bury, 1236, and in a synod held at Wor- cester in 1240, a provision was made that there should be for every male child two godfathers and one godmother, and for every female one godfather and two god- mothers. A constitution of 1281 makes provision for a Christian name being changed at confirmation. This is practically a re- naming of the child. The manner in which it was done was for the bishop to use the name in the invocation and afterwards for him to sign a certificate that he had so confirmed a person by such new name... AFTER DANGERS OF LA GRIPPE,

A Boston paper facetiously remarked that “La Grippe is seldom fatal unless you use all the remedies recommended for it. They are correct. The writer fully be- lieves that the end of the poor “grip,’ vic- tim, ifhe tried all the patent medicines that have adorned (7?) the pages of our leading newspapers as ‘eure cures for La Grippe,” would be like Mark Twain, who for his famous cold tried every remedy ad- vised by friends, until his stomach became so weak he began to vomit and continued until, as he avers, “he was like to throw up his immortal soul.” We notice one of the leading advertisers of the day has been conspicuous at this opportune time by the absence of any claim to cure the “grip,” ard we feel like giving them a free “ad”

for their compassion upon our readers. The more so for the reason that probably more people have

used their remedy, that good oid family medicine, Juhnson’s Anodyne Liniment for this troublesome influenza, than all others combined. And why not? applications recently made by the residents of Charlottetown for Electric Lights, this Company begs to inform the public tha it will increase its plant in the course of May next, if the number of new eubseri- bers for Electric Light justifies the outlay.

With a view also of lowering the cost of Electric Lighting, the Company will furnish to its consumers from this date the Packard Incandescent Lamps at cost, i. e., 35 cents each.

Lamps will only be delivered daily, be- tween the hours of 10 a. m. and 8 p. my so as not to interfere with ye working. ¢
