The latch string is out during the holiday week and old friends and new, the lonely heart and the stranger in our midst. find a welcome and a place by our firesldes. One of the most pleasant and simplest ways of entertaining is at an informal supper. And berg are some menu suggestions and recipes for such informal entertain- ment from the Consumer Section of the Dominion Department p;

Buffet Supper -‘ creamed Chicken with Vegetables in Toast Cups Shredded Cabbage with Russian Dressing Cheese Straws Christmas Cake Cookies (teamed Chicken with Vegetables in ‘Poisst (hips 4 tablespoons mild-flavored fat 4 tablespoons flour I cup milk 1 cup vegetable water or meat V stock -Sn]t and pepper to- taste flush of paprika ‘soups cooked, diced turkey, chicken or other merit 1 cups cooked diced carrots, celery. potatoes, pens or mushrooms ' Prepare a cream sauce from fat. flour.’ liquid and seasoning. Add meat and vegetables and heat thoroughly. itcmovo crusts from 12 slices ti fresh bread. Press slices into muffin pan. The edges may be Ifrilfilfifl with melted butter. Place in moderately hot oven (375 F.) for about l0 minutes. or until ‘toast oops are lightly browned. Just before serving, iiil with creamed mixture. Garnish with parsley. Six servings. Fireside Supper ' Cranberry Ring with Salad Hot Rolls - Apple Sectors Dill Pickles v Cake Squares with ,Peppermini Sauce Cranberry Ring with Salad 2 cups cranberries l cup boiling water itcrispoons granulated gela- line ‘A cup cold water 1/3 cup sugar it cup salt ii cup finely chopped celery “i cup finely dined apple I'd cups of flaked fish or meat.

With each coming of Christ- mas, the magic of radio h upon us.

How our life has been revolu- tionized by this modern means of communication which, twenty- five years ago, was in the tinkering stage in our cellars! Just compare for a moment the wartime Yuletide of today with that of a quarter of a. century’ BBO. . - .

Today. to supplement the earnest but sometimes amateur carollers who march our streets on Christmas Eve, a fine white snow powdering their coats and quickly covering up their eager footsteps. we are able to listen in the ease of our arm-chairs to ths world's finest voices singing the carols we most love to bear.

Today, the deep throbbing tones of a mighty organ, the stirring voices of the best church cholrl and the comforting words of s. preacher of the Gospel find their ways to the beds or chairs of those who are unable to attend in person.

Today, some of us. with hus- bands, sons. brothers or sweet- hearts in battle sones the world cver. may hear — perhaps for the first time in many years —- their voices. swelling comfortably over I. span of thousands of miles.

Today. none of us needs to miss ths great and pious ora- torios. whose music has thrilled listeners through the ages.

Today, the magic of radio links person with person, nation

with nation, hemisphere with hemisphere. Tomorrow, who knows? Per-

haps s new miracle will have been worked, making each new Christmas a little more thrill- ing, sxciting, happy. than the one before!

Well. I don't have to tell you how haPDy I made those child- ren. Never had I seen such grateful smiles. such laughing eyes. such joy.

And when it was all over. I was taken back to my own gard- en and covered up again. And all winter I couldn't help laugh- ing at the sorrowful look of the big tree which had tried-—and
