A standard measurement between points cannot of course be taken as a

rion, because all measnrements will ulcer, according to the pecniiar type of hackney presented for measurement. It is type, and then performance at the walk and trot, and then conclusion as to quality, strength and substance that govern in a class shown to halter. The harness Classes decide the rest.

I suppose decisions at fairs will be made on the basis of the best looking horse and the best goer. If so, I hope that the judges will allow at least 60 per cent for action in the stallion and 40 for his shape, but in the mares 60 for shape and 40 for action, the latter be- cause she is the cradle in which the foal must lie and develop.

I would like to have had time to give you a orief account of the origin of the hackney, but I must refer you to the introduction of our studbook. As to color, I think the rich, dark chestnut is now popular among stallion owners, es- pecially in England, but the brown and dark browns, such as Old Fireaway used to get, are holding their own, while the beautiful bright or the mahogany bay is a color which is much liked in this coun- try, and especially the bay with black points,

A little white pastern or two is a good mark to have when the judges are look- ing for high action, and especially if both fore feet are marked alike, as of course it does not do to have one white foot seemingly going higher than the black oné, and the same can be said avout the hind feet. The white star or creseent in -the forehead or the narrow

trip in the face atid the faint snip on the nose are often carefully looked foras proof of direct blood from some famous stallion or mare, as are the few gray hairs in the flank or the white spot un- der ths belly in some strains uf hackney blood. Blacks are favorites with some people, but others believe that they do not summer well when turned out, and their coats require a deal of working on to get into ehow condition. A brilliant black full of quality and fine action is a pretty sight and a strong one to beat.

The blue roan has always been called a strong one, and for use on general purpose mares never fails to make friends among the old fashioned coun- try breeders, but quality is what. he must have in a remarkable degree to hold the judges, and roan is a color that does not always do itself justice in this particular. The red or strawberry roan carriage team with snap and style can un the price up very high, but when shown in hand the shade is against them, ind here again they must have an un- asual amount of quality to win. A pie oald or skewbald we do not often see oow, and I do not think there are any “magpies” or ‘‘movements” on this side. —A. H. Godtrey in Breeder’s Gazette.

Devon and Shorthorn beef cattle do not thrive so well on light sandy soil. They want heavy pasturage. They do well among hills where the grass is rank. In river bottoms and in sugar mee fields in the south they are profit- able.

PHYLLOCACTUS LATIFRONS, mous “Cochineal cactus” down to the tiny “Button cactus,” the New York Tribune comments as follows upon cactuses in gen eral and one species in particular:

Many people regard these wonders of the vegetable kingdom as “horrid things,” and with good cause, Some of the most awk- ward, ungainly shapes that ever a crazy botanist dreamed of are reproduced ina big cactus bed. For all that the plants are an interesting study, and the number af cactus fanciers is steadily increasing.

Phyllocactus latifrons is a species closely allied to the true night flowering Cereus grandifiorus. Toa lover of flowers itis a treat to see a good, strong plant of the spe cies bud and flower. The stem has few *pines, short and soft, growing at regular intervals on the ridges, of whioh there are five. For weeks it will show no sign of life, and then there will come a sw generally near the top. This swelling gradually open and a little woolly tuft ap- pear. This may bea bud, or it may be a new shoot, and it takes several days before that point is settled. Ifit bea bud, when it has become about 6 inches long and some- what lighter in color toward the end it thould be watched, as it may bloom before any one is aware of it. The flowers usually open about 8 o’clock in the evening, and when once’ the end of the bud bursts the flower can be seen to swell and growand spread out into a sweet smelling thing of beauty.

Hollow House Walls.

In building brick houses where they are not protected by surrounding property it should be considered that hollow walls will add greatly to the convenience of the ocen- pants. Hollow walls will render the house cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and will assist materially in keeping the house dry. The cost of hollow walls is only very little higher than that of walls built solid, says The Canadian Architect.

A Multiple Photograph.

Popular Science News tells that a New Jersey photographer has produced a photo- grapb at a single exposure which gives five differcut images of the same person in dif- ferent positions,

The original face is made in profile, and the reflections give the full face, opposite profile and two rear views. The result is curious and in- teresting and, it has been suggested, would be useful in identifying criminals and an improvement upon the single photograph for that purpose.

Scientific Brevities.

The Eiffel tower is to be “put to sleep.” Near London there is in process of con- struction a gigantic tower which is to over- top the Kiffel by 175 feet, and which, with its base 165 feet above the level of the sea, will reach 1,300 feet above sea level.

A gaseous compound of oxygen and hy- drogen is the remarkable discovery ed from a German laboratory. This new substance is said to dissolve metal and to form powerful explosives with silver and mercury.
