Barbara Ann Heads For New. Richest liole

LONDON. Sept. N-(CP)-Batu bars Ann Scott last night bade Britain a reluctant farewell and headed across the Atlantic to start rehearsals for what probably will be the richest role in her career.

The Canadian skating star, who now cuts financial figures every bit as successful as the loops and whirls she traces on ice. left by plane (B.0.A.C.) for New York and Chicago. There she will train for her star part in "Hollywood ice Revue." sponsored by Arthur Wirtz and Jim Norris, both of Chicago.

-Her salary has been estimated at more than 3100.000 annually. although the contract is not ex- pected to run for a year.

Barbara Ann has one remaining European commitment. She will Hy to Zurich. Switzerland, to ap- pear Oct. 19-31 in I. show spons- ored by British promoter Tom Arnold. Then it's back to North America and the scheduled open- ing, of the new revue at Milwaukee Nov. 7.

"It's been quite a rush.” Bar- bara Ann said in an interview be- fore boarding her plane. "I hav- en't had a holiday for a year and I don't know when the next one will be."

WASHINGTON. Sept. 29-(Ap) -A "chess board" method of ap. plying powerful X-rays offers new hope in treating advanced cases of cancer resistant to other treat- ments. a New York doctor said yesterday.

Dr. Hirsch Marks described it m9th0d 01 applying X-ray through I "grid". He said it allows at.- taeklng 3 cancer with much more Powerful doses than can be em- ployed in conventional X-ray treatment without seriously dam- aging normal tissue.

In conventional treatment, he told the American Roentgen Ray Society, X-ray is directed against the skin with no intervening ma- terial. The strength of doses is limited by the tolerance of the normal tissue surrounding or ov- erlying the cancer itself.

"After all, there's only so much you can do on ice," she said. "Act- ing out a story. on the other hand. gives skating a purpose. I hope they will try some in Canada."

"Home Nursing" was chosen as a topic for study during the win- ter months.

It was decided to join again the Canadian Tuberculosis Association.

An interesting report on the an- nual convention was given by Mrs. Wm. Harris and Mrs. Louis Her- ring. Mrs. E. H. MacKinnon re- ported on the progress made in obtaining a room for the Dental Clinic. Mrs. Louis Herring was appointed to send convalescent cards to sick members.

The following committees were appointed:-

One member subscribed to the Institute News. Collection was 50 cents. Meeting closed with the National Anthem. A delicious lunch was served by the hostess and assistants.

The regular meeting of, the Clielton Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Heber Schurman on Sept. 12th. The meeting opened with the "Creed' repeated in unison. Eight mem- bers answered roll call. The cor- respondence included I refund check for the delegaies' faresfrom Institute office.

In regard to delegates' expenses to A.C.W.W. Conference in 1953, it. was moved and seconded that membership be raised to 35 cents for two years as suggested. to make possible a fund for same.

It was also moved and second- ed that 3.00 be sent to Cancer Society. A "Thank-you" card for sympathy card was also read.

The committees' reports were given. and thanks for fruit sent to one of a. member's family, was conveyed. Bill for same was pre- sented and paid. 32.30 was hand- ed in to be added to ice cream social proceeds made from extra eggs, cream. etc. not used.

Industry Growth Important Factor in Ganadian Life

MONTREAL. Sept. 29-(cri- Canada is far ahead of most coun- tries in the extent and variety of her primary products and natural resources, the National Council of Women was told yesterday.

The report of the Council's com- mittee on natural resources was prepared by Mrs. C. W. Boss of Regina. who said that with great- er industrlal development this country is better able to deal with today's complex problems.

The report presented many high- lights supplied by local commit- tees. Port Arthur, Ont., gave in- formation of the mining fields of the Thunder Bay district and said the opening of new iron mines will provide employment for large num- bers. In the West Algoma-Fort William area local industries were studied, including Canada's only wheat starch plant. Lakehead stor- age elevators handle 36 per cent of Canada's wheat crop, it was stated.

Toronto reported growth of new

industries in the area was above average. The Toronto committee supported a project organized by a garden club for landscaping Uni- versity Avenue with native trees. Kingston, Ont., noted immense quantities of grain handled by el- evators at nearby Portsmouth. and the planting of thousands ofyoung trees in a section near the city by children from country schools. Halifax reported ll. forest conser- vation program was started in the scliools and extended to adults through the Green Forest League, comprising 100.000 members. The program also stresses conservation of wild life. In Truro, N. S., art- icles on natural resources were read at meetings and a speaker discussed industries along the north shore of the St. Lawrence. At Moose Jaw, Sask., a meeting heard an address and saw a film on the search for oil. In Medicine. Hat, Alta., a meeting was held on the subject of irrigation. The British Columbia north shore report told of the &500.000.- 000 aluminum plant to be built near Prince Rupert. British Col- umbia's record lumber cut in 1950 was noted, but it was stated that the large extent of denuded forest land poses a problem of reforest- ation.

Kamloops. B. (7., reported that the trend of the lumber business is toward mechanization, and Vic- toria noted an expansion of the national parks of the Province.
