Not only did Alma Mater send out strong firsts in this year, but splendid second and third teams followed in their wake. But the success that fol- lowed the boys whom they emulated was not vouchsafed them. The second fifteen—the ‘* Excelsiors”’—engaged in battle with the Prince Edwards, a city team, and were taken into camp, while the third team had it out with the Park Team. which they defeated. The records at hand are somewhat defec- tive concerning those two teams-—-the re was then no CoLLecium to transmit the names of their players to posterity —and I am therefore unable to give their personnel, This I very much re- gret, because they numbered among their warriors, many whose names I should much like to inscribe on this scroll, intended to link the past with the present.

However, amid the haze of years,

the portly form of one leviathan, looms out in bold relief before my gaze. His smiling face and ge nial

manner cannot yet have faded from the memories of all of eighty- -eight’s

footballers. Men of 88 have you yet forgotten St. Dunstan's famous 2604 pounder! Surely when you drop into

a remniscent mood, he cannot fail to appear upon the scene. If football dreamings d ot call him forth, surely those ot baseball serve to fill the void. With that sport as the spirit of your dreams, he must be the bright particular star around which all the lesser lights revolve. If James 8. Sullivan’s essays to shine at football, have not left undying impressions, | know his demonstrations while engaged at his favorite sport, are yet green in the memories of many. Could his stentorian order, not to board there, uttered with allegro movement to one who hagged second bag too long, be very easily forgotten? Jim, or “ big Jim,” as he was called to distinguizh him from a namesake, was never num-

bered among the devotees of the Rugby game. Obesity is invariably

recognized as a hindrance to easy mo- tion, yet Jim always forcibly maintained that his aversions were engendered by the gunic’s destruction upon laundried goods, However, considering, he came out of his two first games, each time minus a new white shirt, this rea son, specious and all though it may have appeared, had to stand, Yet, notwithstanding his dislikes, Jim was prevailed upon to play; and when it came to a long, steady “scrim,” he did his share of the pushing in thorough style. The overtures and compromises made in order to get him to indulge in football can be better told by him who may undertake to write up the base- ball of the past. No one could ques- tion the portly New Yorker's love for that sport without committing the rankest kind of heresy. Should any of the old boys ever feel inclined to undertake the work, I trust that the strenuous efforts of Jim’s Fidus Achates, “Capi. Anson,” to boom the game, shall receive due recognition,

But now neither thoughts of foot- ball nor baseball claita the major por- tion of Jim’s attention. The knotty problems always presenting themselves in the field of medicine are of far more moment to him than when he laid plans to keep his shirt intact, or make scecond without being deciared out. Monaghan is pur- suing his theological studies at the Pro- paganda College, Rome. R. J. Macdon- ald was, up to a few months ago, when he returned to his native province to enjoy a brief rest from study, also a

Of course St. Dunstan’s had by no means @ picnic, but their pretentions were not so lofty. New Glasgow was twice forced to touchdown for safety, but as these marks of superiority did not count according to rule the game ended in a draw. Delaney, of the

team of ’86, and Boudreault, Sullivan, Blacquiere, Burke, MecAulay and McDougall, of the team of ’S7 played in this match. Sullivan

Casault betook bimself to his home at Rimouski, Que., after bidding St. Dunstan’s adieu. Shortly afterwards he gravitated further south and located at Salem, Mass., engaging in the dry goods business. Most of the boys of this team will remember how vigor- ously ‘* Moses” resented the rather em- phatic language New Glasgew’s loqua- cious quarter ased towards him for dealing in such long punts.

Cahill now resides in Hartford, Conn. His business is to prescribe for the ills to which flesh is heir, in which occupation he is said to be meeting with the greatest success. Joe could give about the most graceful, and at the same time effective ‘ shove off” of any man in the team. When he touched you 190 pounds of muscle sec- onded his motion, and you either min- gled with mother earth, or were po- litely but hastily pushed aside. Perhaps New Glasgow's 210 pound forward, if he were ever conscious of that “slat” Joe avers to have given him over the touch line, could best dilate upon the puissance of the doctor’s arms. If he is now as strong medically as physically, disease trifles with another wrong man,

Alex. is perhapsa littlemore reserved than of yore ; but shall the-change be ascribed to his enlistment into the noble army of Benedicts ?

Trainor now owes allegiance to another institution of learning, being ensconced within the walls of Ottawa College. However, he cannot yet have forgotten the Mater to whose apron string he was first attached.
