iMditorial Notes.

— The Monetary Times says :—

“The New England fishermen are up in arms

against any rational arrangement of the fishery question, and they will use their influence with Comzress in that direction. It will be quite as

portant to hear what the consumers have to say on the subject. A good deal more salt water tish than is received in Ontario could be consumed here under proper arrangements. Hereafter, it is said, the fish peddlers of Toronto will be able to otfer their customers the option of salt water or

lake fish; and if the former can be sold at about the same price as the latter, it will almost upiver- sally get the preference.

—The Montreal Gazette remarks that Canada was the destination of but a small fraction of those who imigrated from the United Kingdom in November. in that month 15,757 persons sailed from Great Britain, of whom 9,276 were bound for the United States, 4,199 for Australia, 818 for Canada, and 1,964 for all other places, but some consolation may be found in the fact that the winter mocths are invariably a season of small emigration to the Dominion. from the old world. In the eleven months for the present year 254,139 persons are recorded as haviog left the United Kingdom, or 40,300 fewer than last year, aud ot these 178.316 were destined for the United States, 12,610 for Canada, and 38,140 for Australia, a decrease in the immigration to each of these countries as compared wit t that of 18384.

— Mor. Fabre has, it is said, addressed a circular letter to the Priests in his diocese, in which the Priests are strictly forbiddea to meddle with politics in ary shape or form. It is the duty, Mor. Fabre says, of every good and conscien- tious pastor to direct his flock in the right path ; but when a political question is on the ¢tapis, he is not to use the pulpit as ahusting to utter statements in con- nection with his views therein, he is not to speak on political matters even io private. The Riel question is not openly mentioned, but it is re- ferred to in such a way as to show that what several cures have said recently in connection with the “ Na- tioual” movement, and in connection with the hanging of Riel generally, has displeased Mgr. Fabre in the extreme. The letter concludes by an injunction to the effect that any priest who wil! make known its contents to any member cf the daily press shall immediately be sus- pended from his ministerial functions. It is especially the conclusion of the letter which has caused a sensation, as it appears for the first time in any of Mgr. Fabre’s circulars.

—The Boston Traveller states ‘that according to the census of 1880 the pro- ducing interests of the American fisheries comprehend in their operations a capital of $37,935,349, with an annual product of $43,046,053, employ 131,426 persons. and supper. £00,Tu4 Ofhers. An interest like thisis entitled on all principles of fairness and justice to the most careful consideration of the government. Secre- tary Bayard, without consultation with those interests in fisheries, pledged him- self touse the influence of the adminis- tration to secure at the hands of Congress the reference of questions involved in the fisheries to an international commission. The American Fisb- ery Union is now circulating a memorial, which is being everywhere signed by those interested in American fisheries, asking Congress not to do what Secretary Bayard has pledged himself to favor. The question is becoming one of the fishermen against the Secretary. To which of these parties will Congress fis- ten?” Buty as Lradstreet points ont, the advocates of “ American fisheries” carefully conceal the important fact that serious complications between the United States and Canada, as the result of Yan- kee fishermen trespassing in Canadian waters, are morally certain to follow a continuance of the present status.

—The Halifax Critie says: ‘‘ The celebration of the birth of our Saviour naturally awakens a desire within us to know something ofthe growth and deve- lopment of Christianity throughout the world. When we remember that syste- matic mission work among tke heathen was scarce commenced at the close of the 18th century, it appeats surprising that in the year of our Lord, 1885, Christian influence aud Christian domination over the earth Mould be so wide-spread. Prof. A. J. Shem, one cf the chief authorities on statistics, lus published a computation that is both surprising aud gratifying. He reports the population of the world at 1,396,752,000 souls ; of whom 685,495.- 4llare under the Christian government, and 711,383,589 under non Christian governments. The total area of the earth he reekons to be 52,092,470 square miles ; of which 32,410,915 square miles are under Christian Governments, and 19 042,525 square miles under non- Christian governments. It will thus be seen that uearly one-half the population of the globe, with about two-thirds the area of its laud surface are under Governments which acknowledge the Savior to be the Sou of God; this is certainly a resuk to which Christians may point with satisfaction, and one which should be taken to heart by the sceptics of this age. Let us hope, as the years roll round, each Christmaa may record the ever increasing growth of the Church which Christ has establish- ed on earth,

The Chignecto’ Post says :-—

“This locality has suddenly bounded for- ward to oceupy animportant place in the public eye. Heretofore it has been known

in the prose and verse of travellers; in newspaper discussions, the origin. of as

much romanee as solid facts; and in the debates in Parliament, more than once creating there as much of a storm of wind and froth, as beats in wrath about its base. Now it is plunging forward in a new role. Everybody wants to build a railway to thie important place. The Sackville people, early one morning while Amherst was asleep, took the start snd commenced a Railway. Then the Islanders put forth their strength and got one built on the cther side to connect with it. This was all insufticient to meet the aspirations end hopes of this famed locality, and Senator Howlan launched forth his scheme of a eub-way, so that people could go back and forth between the Cape and the Island dry shod, and trains meander through with loads of merchandize. This scheme seemed for the moment to be large enough to satisfy the highest vaults of ambition— but only for a moment. Next came a scheme to connect this great enirepot with Shediac, a survey was made, and a’ lice’ evidently pre- pared by Nature herself was for- tunately discovered. But even this does not sutlice, for now we read in the Canada Gazette that Amberst proposes ‘to con- struct, equip and operate a railway from the Intercolonial at or near Amherst to Cape Tormentine, and operate steam and other vessels in connection therewith.’ The Pacific Syndicate has not yet been heard from, but when it is, we have no doubt this happy spot will be selected as the Atlantic terminus of the Pacific Railway. In the meantime Cape Tormentine continaes to be Cape Tormentine still, and to preserve its virgin reputation as the last strictiy Scott Act stopping place on the route to the ‘tioht’ little Island.”

The Northern Light.

A TERRIBLE NIGHT IN THE GULF.— THE STEAMER DISABLED.

Tne steamer Northern Light encoun- tercd a terrific hurricane, while on her trip from Georgetown te Pictou, on Saturday. Full particulars of the passage have not yet been received, but as far as can be learned the seenes on board the steamer, from the time the storm overtook her until she reached Georgetown, were terrible. As she lies now at that port, she presents the appearance of a crait which seems to have been brought to harbor, not by human skill, but by a special interposition of Pro- vidence.

The Northern Light, we learn, left Georgetown .for Pictou on Saturday mornifg, at 6 o'clock, She had procceded as’ far es ‘Pictow Island when overtaken by athick snow storm, accoin- panied by a heavy northeast gale. The wind shortly increased to a hurricane and it became so thick they could not enier Pictou harbor. Therefore, they were obliged tu put about and face the violent storm Thesea ran mountains high, the wind reached an almost unprecedented velocity, and the little craft pitched and rolied frightfulily. A prodigous sea struck her, breaking in and carrying a part of the wheel house, driving the Pilot, Capt. Mc- Lean, into Capt. Finlayson’s room and knocking Capt. Finlayson out through the wheel house door on the deck. Capt. Mc- Lean, who had hold of the first wheel,

carried the part which he -grasped with tilmi; Dut tmmediavely recovering himself he

grasped the second wheel and thus kept the steamer bow on to the storm.

The scene betwéen decks was indescri- bable. The freight— which consisted chiefly of eighty barrels of pork, several porkers, and a horse owned by James McLawchlan, Eaq , Souris—rolled to and fro, threatening at times to break through the sides of the vessel, and endangering the lives and limbs of the crew. To remedy this as mitch as possible, the pork barrels were broken, and their contents. emptied on the deck. The coal escaped from the bins and got among the cargo, while the water which entered swept through, making the scene between decks as disgusting as it was dangerous. The horse’a legs were broken, and he was killed by constant thumping against the side of the vessel, as she rolled and pi’ched in the sea: The watchman, Smith, while working among the cargo, received severe injuries, as did others of the crew.

In the engine room it was difficult for Engineer McMillan to keep his feet, and he received a bruise in the breast and other injories by falling against the machinery. The pumps were kept constantly gving, as the water was making freely during the whole passage.

The storm did not show any sign of abating until early morning. It was, therefore, impossible to make port, and with half steam on Capt. Finlayson kept bis craft's bow to the wind during the night, and made Georgetown at nine o'clock yesterday morning.

Capt, McLean, during the storm, was struck in the face and severely cut ; while Capt. Finlaysor had his shouldets slightly injured.

During the storm the left port was broken by the pitching ef the cargo, but was for- tunately discovered in time and spiked.

_ The carpenters are busily at work repair- ing her, and it is expected she will be ready for the route in two days, he mai's arrived by train yesterday, but it will be impossible for any foreign mail ‘to leave before Wednesday morning.

Death of David McGregor.

Mr McGrecor, who was injured on Saturday morning, has, happily, been relieved from his sufferings. Most persons find it hard enough to live in this world, when they are uninjured, and it is better far to be at rest than to have to bear the long agony and deprivation Mr. McGregor would have been compelled to endure, had he continued to live. While we deeply sympathize with his family and friends, we cannot but think that, in his case particu- larly, death has given a happy release. Mr. McGregor was an estimable citizen, and in his death the P. HK, Island Railway has Jost one of its most faithful employes. He leaves a wife and family of five small chil- dren.

A side-wheel steamer has been chartered by Boston and Yarmouth parties to ron two trips a week, between those ports, next season. The Oity of St. John will run on the south shore, and the Dominion to Bos- ton. The Times also says that Mrs. Fish- wick and other Halifax parties are after

The Storm.

Tue heaviest gale probably for some years was experienced here on Saturday last. It commenced about daylight, and blew steadily from the north until about one o’clock in the afternoon, when it veered to the north-east, and gradually increased until between six and eight o'clock in the evening when it a‘tained at times the {great velocity of 48 miles an hour (the guste con- siderably exceeding that). ;

The gale blew heavily all night watil morning, when it abated. About seven inches of snow fell during the storm. This morning it again blew hard, along with a silver thaw. The latter effectuaily fast- bseund the anemometer cups with a thick coating of ice, so that the velocity of the wind was not recorded.

The storm was destructive to property in town and country. Barns were unroofed and in many instances blown down. Trees were uprooted, telegraph poles blown down and telegraphic communication is almost entirely suspended. To the Eost the snow fall was heavy and trains were yesterday evening sent out to clear the railway track. In the city telephone wires were broken in all directions. Chimneys were blown down, and slates flying from roofs made it danger- ous for pedestrians. We regret to see that numerous ornamental trees planted in the city have been destroyed.

The hanging signs which make our clty streets dangerous during storms, came to greof in many instances. We cannot see why acity bye-law cannot be passed, for- bidding the use of these signs. In no city where the bodily safety of citizens is taken

into consideration are they allowed. Why allow them here ?

a. The Fire at the “ Herald” Office.

Soon after eight o'clock this morning, the fire bell sounded, and before many minutes there was a general alarm of bells and steam whistles The scene of action proved to be at the Herald Office, where a boy, named Michael O'Connell engaged at lighting the fire, songht to stimulate it gently with theaid of a little kerosene oil. It was the old story— the oil in the can caught fire and the blaze encompassed the #mall boy, It is hot known, but supposed that he endeavored to put the flames out which also attacked a table standing a few feet fram the stove. He soon ran down stairs, however, screani- ing and pitched himself into a snowbank in front of the office. He was a flame frem head to foot, and the first thought of those who gathered around was to relieve the little sufferer. His clothes were literally cut from him by Mossrs. Robert Vanlder- stine and Albert Stevenson, and he was borne to the City Hospital where he now lies in great agony, attended by Dr. Taylor.

The alarm was scarcely sounded before Mr. Walsh, the manager of the Herald, who lives no distance from the office, was on the spot. Together with Chief Engineer Large, they entered the composing room which was densly filled with smoke, when with the aid of a few buckets of water which were rapidly passed by parties dn attendance, the blaze was soon extingnished. The Steam Engines were on hand, but it Was not not found necossary to lay any ‘tose. The damage to the Herald office amounts to the charring of a table and the breaking of afew panes of glass. Nota type was disturbed aud the Meralad will appear in due time on Wednesday.
