At present their capture is no more than accidenta!. Porpoises are known to venture into salme~ estuaries during spring flood tices, returning to salt wa- ter with the vubb, and, as an improve- ment on the ; resent casual supply sys- tem, strong ripe nets might he cast at the mouths of these estuaries to inter- cept the invaders as they leave. Prob ably, however, the ultimate solution will be found in the rifle and some par- ticular cartridge, preferably fronted with soft, hollow lexd to flatten in the crea- ture’s ribs. Some Extraordinary Mothers,
Probably the youngest grandmother of whom we have record was a Lady Child of Shropvhire, England. She had married at 12 years of ago and hada child before her thirteenth year was completed. This child in turn married While still very young, with the result that Lady Chi'd was a grandmother at 27. The most extraordinary cases of motherhood wrre those of Mrs. Honey- wood of Charing, in Kent, and Lady Temple of Stow. When the former died, on May 10, 120, aged 93, she counted as her descenlants 16 children, 114 grandchildren, 228 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandcbildren. The other case was even more remarkable Lady Temple, who died in 1656, had give birth to 4 sons and 9 daughters and lived to seo more than 700 descend- ante.

The Patriot’s special correspondent **Mac” being in the eastern section of the island on business beard many compii- mentary remarks concerning Dr Williams’ Pink Puls, which appear to be the favorite medicine in all parts of Canada. Among thoere who are very emphatic in the praise of this medicine is Neil McPhee, J. P.. of Glencorrodale, and our correspondent de. termined to call upon bim and ascertain from his own lips hia views inthe matter. Mr McPhee was found at home, and as he is a very entertaining and inte/ligent gentle man, Our correspondent was soon “at home” (ou. When questioned about the benefits he was reported to have received from the use of Dr. Williams’ Pick Pi'ls, Mr McPhee said: —“About four vears ago I got run down from overwork on the farm. land on my property, 1 thought I could go into making timber in‘addition to my farm work. The task, however, proved too heavy for my strength,and I soon began to break down. I contracted a cevere cold, neuralgia followed, and I found myself in shattered health. I felt very much diss treesed and discouraged and spent many sleepless nights.I tried sevearl very highly recommended medicines but received no permanent benefit from any ofthem. As Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills were so highly recommended through the press I thought I would give them a fair trial. After using a few boxes I found they were having the desired effect and { began to find my wonted heslth and strength gradu- ally returning. Ikept onusing the pills until I had regained my former vigor and gained considerable in flesh as well. Now I consider mysel a healthier man, and feel as well as ever I did in my life. A Sufficient Diet. A quart of milk, three-quarters of a. pound of moderately fat beef—sirloin, for instance—and five ounces of wheat flour, a]l contain about the same amount of nutritive material, but we pay very different prices for them, and they have different values for nutriment. The milk comes nearest to being a perfect food. It contains all of the different kinds of nutritive materials that the body needs. Bread made from the wheat flour will support life. It con- tains all the necessary ingredients for nourishment, but not in the proportions best adupted for ordinary use. A man might live on beef alone, but it would be a very one sided and imperfect diet, but meat and bread together make the essentials of a healthy diet. Such are the results of experience, and the ad- vancing science of later years explains them. This explanation takes into ac- count not simply quantities of meat and bread and milk and other materials whioh we eat, but also the nutritive in- gredients or ‘‘nutrients’’ which they contaiz.—New York Ledger.

Her Splendid Hair.
When Mrs. Norton was in the heyday of her loveliness, a very beautiful Ital- ian woman came to London, bringing letters of introduction. Mrs. Norton asked a small party of fashionable peo- ple to meet her at dinner, among whom was Lord Normanby, a great ~dmirer of pretty women. All the men were en- chanted with the beactiful stranger and all the women rather jealous. One of her great beauties was a profusion of splendid hair, dressed in innumerable plaits. The women decided they were not all her own. Before the evening was over Lord Normanby expressed his admiration of the wonderful hair and intimated how much he should like to see it let down.
‘‘Since you wish it, my lord,’’ said the woman, and she forthwith un,y.aited one massive coil after another, while fe other women looked on, devoured with envy. ‘‘I am doing for you, my Jord, what I do not do for everybody,”’ said the houri, casting up her fine eyes at the enraptured Lord Normanby from under her mantle of flowing locks. ‘‘It¢ is three weeks now since I last un- did my hair.’’
