Some Queer Wagers.
Tue presidential election takes place to-| morrow. The campaign has brought out | an immense number of strange bets.
An odd bet has been made by Sergt. Johnson and Private Wallace, of Jefferson Barracks, a military station near St. Louis. Seret.* Johnson is 4 Harrison and Morton man, while Private Wallace is & Democrat. It has been agreed that the loser will, on Nov. 7, run a gauntlet of 120 soldiers ranged sixty on a side on the parade ground and armed with regulation rifles topped with beyonets sheathed in cloth and tipped with a rag ball. The path is to be ten feet wide, and through this the loser is to run, dodging as best he may to save his ribs. Rev. B. F. Thomas, pastor of the Caron- dolet Methodist Church, St. Louis, is a Republican, and Robert W. Harbison is a Democrat. They have bet on the following terms: If Harrison be elected Harbison will on two Sundays discharge any duties of the pastor that may have accumulated luring the intervening weeks. If Cleve- ind be elected, the pastor will canvass or the sale of sewing machines for two days, turning the profits over to the winner of the wager. A Scandinavian at Moorehead, Minn., named John Peterson, has bet with a Ger man named Keahrer, that if Cleveland be ‘lected Peterson will sit astraddle the peak of « barn all day, from 8 o’clock a. m., till op.m. If Harrison be Keahrer will do the same.
In the event of Cleveland being re-elect- «l Dick Steever, of Cincinnati, will wear a petticoat for three months, and in case Harrison is the man Mr. Tepe will be under that obligation, the loser, if he does not comply with the conditions, forfeits S100.
Alf. Burnett, of Charleston W.°Va., has a bet with the city marshal that whichever the k ser,shall walk the streets from dark to daylight without uttering a word, eating anything, drinking, chewing or smoking.
A Baltimore politician, who is fond of his nip, agrees to abstain from the use of liquor for one year if Cleveland is defeated, while the other fellow, who is a strong Pro- hibitionist, is to get gloriously drunk the day after election if Harrison is not suc- cessful.
Michael Wallace, a New York Republi- can, wears a handsome pair of sideboards, which he will shave off if his man loses. Frederick Busch, a barber and an ardent admirer of Cleveland, with whom Wallace made the bet, wagers to lose his moustache if Harrison wins. Elmer Thomas, of Cleveland, and Mina Webster have made this contract: If Cleveland is elected they will be married on inauguration day; if he is not elected, the marriage is to be postponed until an- other Democratic president is inaugurated. Thomas is hustling for Cleveland votes.

FisuinG Nores.—Shore fishing for some weeks has been more than usually inter- rupted by the unsettled state of the weather. Herring, which were driven off the Shelburne coast by gales of early fall, have again appeared in some places. On Thursday morning last week nets off South Side and Stony Island were very well iished, in some cases over a barrel to a_ net. During the past week the boats did quite well codfishing, for the chances they had. Thursday and Saturday the best catches were made. The fish were of fair size, and mostly full of small herring. This is con-
sidered by the fishermen asa good sign for a fall school. Very few halibut are
