The Concert Last Night.

Tue Concert in Y. M. C, A. Hall last night was not so well aitended as it should

be, considering the excclience of the pro-

gramme. The vocal solo, ‘* Love's Old Sweet Song,” by Mrs. Maleolm McLeod, was swecby sung aud received a hearty encore. Miss Bagratt’s solo, with violin obligato by Miss Newbery and piano ac- esmpaniment by Mr. Heartz, was weil rei « dered ; as was also the vocal solo by Miss Hyndman, which was encored. Theaudience was much disappointed at not being privie eged to hear Mrs. E. H. Norton sing, as she wus unable to be present. ‘The instrument- al music by Mr. Vinuicombe’s orchestra, particularly the selections from ‘‘ It Trova- tore,” was, as usual, excellent. The piano solo, ‘t Believe me, of all those endearing young charms,” by Miss Fannie Weeks, was a gem in its way, and was deservedly appliuded. Mr. anton’s solo, ‘The Death of Nelson,” was well received. The cornet solo by Mr. Fletcher was well played. Mr. Heartz was the accompanist,

Concert at Tiznish.

Tue concert that was to be given in St. Mary’s Hail by the members of the Band Committee on St. Patrick’s Duy, but which was postponed on _ acc- ount of stormy weather, came offun the 24:h instant, witb grand success. An orderly and appreciative audience filled the hall, and the programme, from a musical standpoint, certainly wes the best ever given there. Although the band instruments have been in the hands of the committee for a few months only, astonish- ing progress has been made,—is anvth r striking proof of where there is a will there isa way. Too much praise cannot be given

the teacher, and, indeed, each individual nember of the bind, for the -ex- cellunt music rendered on Monday night. The concers was very good throughout, and must have been especially pleasing to those who loved to be where music arose with its yoluptuous swell. Valuable assistance was given the Committee~ by the young ladies and gentlemen of Tignish in making the concert a success. The singing of the

- young ladies was very good, and the acting

of some of the young gentlemen biought down the house. Altogether the concert reflects much credit upon all concerned in it. The sum of $65 which was real zed goes, we mnderstand, towards paying for the band instruments.

Mere Contempt of Court.

A short time ago, Mr. D. W. Hender- Seott Act Prosecutor for the County, lodged information against # Queen’s County trader, and the case came up for hearing befure Simon Brown and John Deacon, Ezq3., J. P.’s, yesterday Mr. Henderson was placed on the stand as a witness. During the course of the evidence, however, he refused to answer a question put tohim by the defendant's counsel, Mr. A.A. McLean. The magistrate directed him to answer the question, but he per- sisted in his refusual, whereupan the magistrate, it is st ited, adjudged him guilty of a contempt of court, and ordered him to be taken into custody by a constable who was present. The constable, however, In formed the court that he had never beeo sworn in and refused to hold on to his man The magistrate, in the meantime, wrote out the warrant of committment for four days. The constab’e then said that he was that he had been sworn in— and took the warrant for execution. Bu: before the matter was thus settled, Mr H-ndersun had left the premises. The Warrant is now in the constable’s hands for

Summary of Proceedings.

THE BUDGET SPEECH.

Orrawa, March 27.

In the House of Commons this afternoon Mr. Hosterdelivered the bndget speech. The revenue for the past year exceeds the esti- mates by $181,576. The revenue for 1889 increased over 7 per cent, and the net sur- plus was $1,865,035. For the current year he estimates the total revenue at $39,200,- 000, as follows: customs, $24,000,000; excise, $7,000,000; miscellaneous, $6,200, - 000. The receipts to March 20th reached $27,897,504. The expenditure for the cur- rent year up to March 20 was $22,353,899, and Mr. Foster estimates the expenditure to 30th June at $36,590,000, leaving a probable surplus of $2,700,000. _ He anti- cipates a decline in custums revenue this year compared with last. The net public debt on 39th June will reach $238,671,145. For the next year, 1890, the Minister ex- pects to receive the same amount of revenue as in the current year. To meet the expen- diture of $36,700,000 for next year he hopes to collect from customs $23,500, - 000, from excise $70,000,000 and from other sources $4,700,000. The Minis- ter of Finance explained at length the various changes proposed in the tariff.

After recess, Sir Richard Cartwright fol- lowed in a three-hour speech, and moved a resolation in effect that the House «should address itself to abolishing or reducing the taxes now imposed on articles of prime necessity to farmers, miuers, fishermen and other producers.

Exiled to Siberia.

Kansas Mo., March 27.

George Kennan has received a’ letter written by Mme. Mary Tsebtekeva, who has just been exiled to Siberia. The leiter contains atopy of ‘the petition, for the writing of which she was banished. It is simply a vivid description of the condition of the Russians ard an appeal for reforms. It contains no threat against the Czar, as alleged by the police, hut warns him that the state of things that exists in Russia are sure to produce danverous disorders.
