Starlight, who was the fastest new trotter of 1902 was owned by Mr. J. A. Johnston, Halifax, and had obtained a record of 2.04 1-2 in’ a wagon race in 1889 and in 1902 thirteen years later won flvc out of six starts. all in straight heats, everyone oi which was trot- ted from 2.31 1-2 to 2.24 1-4. This performance of a horse up in his tens gives us present day racing fans something to think about and shows clearly that our foundation stock here in the Maritimes were real horses.

Another instance of the above was Zita M., who won her first race at Woodstock in August and on the same track in September, obtain- ed her record oi 2.24 1-4 in a six

heat race in the 2.29 trot and pace. Sousa was owned in Moncton.

She was imported from Ontario and got her mark at Sussex. Don- Katie Wallard was a Michigan 5nd mare owned by E. Le Roi Willis ahd got her mark at Sussex. Don- cilla was owned by J. B. Gilchrist of Greenwich, N. B. This mare made a winin 2.26 at Calais in July and reduced the above mark to 2.24 8-4 at Sussex. George was thcn owned lay O. B. Keith, Berry's Mills and got his record at Momramcook.

Lady Lumps, who wasowncd by D. W. MacKay, St. Stephen, was successful in negotiating a heat at Calais in 2.29 l-4 and made hcr record at Woodstock. Harry M. oer-nod by ohnrlcs Urquhart of Elmsdale had made a record of 2.45 in 1901 and at Halifax reduced it to 2.27 1-4. Nina Wilkcs, owned by J. R. During thc three years that the subsidized collection. boats have been serving eastern Nova Scotia, shipments of live lobsters to Mas- sachusetts have increased from 3.616 crates mately 12,900

and consequent Shppers receiving poor commonly lay the blame on factor or another, neglecting others. however, that many factors that have to be eon-, trolled if live lobsters transported and marketed in good condition. In the control of these (actors, fishermen, collection boats, and dealers ‘ must all play their proper parts. The successful mar- keting oi live lobsters is, from be- Glhhlhg to end, a matter of close attention to details, and it is only by maintaining favourable condi- tions frcrri the time the lobster is caught until it is finally marketed that the maximum return may bc expected. These favourable condi- tions are known, and need only to be applied. The total loss may be dmlnlshed only by cutting loss at every‘ possible point.

Each lobster lost by the fisher- men represents the loss oi a. cer- tuln amount of time, energy, and money expended in catching it, to say nothing of potential market value, yet the loss of lobsters which occurs on fishing boats and during the time they are held for shpment is not commonly stress- cd, for it does not show up ‘n rc- turns. Nevertheless, it must repre- sent a considerable portion u! the fishermank total loss. 0n fishing boats lobstersmust be handled gontly and protected from direct sunlight, wind and bilge. They should also be protected from mu- tilatlon by plugging or of bending the claws, not merely because of the dead or "weak" loss which of- ten results from mutilation, but also bccausc one-armed lobsters arc not wanted by the live lobster trade, and commonly sell for only half price. Some crates were ship- ped last season which contained as high as 60 percent. one-armed lobsters, and many contained les- ser amounts. This is a source of loss which only the fishermen themselves can remedy by the me- thods suggested.

Other losses may occur during tllc time lobsters arc held await- ing shipment. Some of these are doubtless due to tllc {act that the lobsters have previously been im- properly handled on the fishing boats. Still more result when ship- ping crates containing lobsters are held in relatively warm and shal- low water that has little moi/fi- mcnt. In localities 0i this nature the use oi the lath crate will be found oi great assistance through providing better water circulation. Still more loss may result from surface contact with fresh water from nearby streams.

The shipment of short lobsters is another source of loss which can be elTminated only by the individ- uol shippers. In 1932, 33,191 short lobsters were culled from Canadian shipments to Massachusetts, and served to re-stock depicted Ameri- can watcrs. This was the largest number seized lll any single year since 1909. It is greatly to be re- gretted that included in this total arc 2.910 seed lobsters from Nova scotia. Ii each crate of lobsters shipped is to arrive in proper con- dition it must be shipped In pro- pcr condition. This involves atten- tio to the factors mentioned above, alld also requires culling as close as possible to the time of shipment. More attention to these details on the part oi individual shippers ls urgently nccded.
