— For years, says the Toronto Mail, the Australasian Colovies have been de- sirous of bringing the Western Pacific Island and the Eastern portion of New Guinea within the domivion or protec- torate of England. This question has of jJate occupied the more serious attention of the Colonial office and an adjust- ment will likely soon take place. It is argued that such an amalgamation will both strengthen the Austra- lasian Colonies, and open up addi- tional channels for English commerce. Besides, it is part of the French policy to use some of the Pacific islands for criminal colonies, which would be decid- edly to the injury of Australia, and to prevent this an annexion of the islands is of great importance.
—The great telegraphic strike is now virtually over, and as was anticipated by those who watched the struggle between the operators, and the wealthy monopoly who employed them, no prac- tical advantage whatever has resulted from it. On the other hand when the collapse becomes complete, many of the strikers wil! find themselves without em- ployment, without an opportunity to pro- cure employment, and altogether in a very much worse position than they
were before the strike begav. The defections from the brotherheod are
daily growing more numerous. From every side report comes that so many here aud so many there have returned to work, uuder the same conditions as before the strike, not a few being re- eugaged at less liberal salaries than was formerly paid them. From no less an authority than Master Workman Camp- bell core the intelligence of the total failure of the strike. To all the assem- blies the following telegram was sent:
‘* Executive Board Brotherhood regret to say that the strike is a failure. All the members who can may return to work im- mediately. (Signed) Joun CaMPpBeELt.’
The reasons given for this action may be briefly summed up as follows :—The knowledge that the Western Union would never coucede the demand of the strikers, that constant defections from their ranks had weakened them so that further resistance was seen to be useless, and
that the chances of those who re- mained out of regaining their position were daily becoming less.
The effect of the order was as may be supposed electrical. Hundreds of the striking operators immediately began to pour into the Western Union offices seeking to be re-installed, numbers of | them only to be disappointed, by finding that their services could be henceforth dispensed with.
Silver Currency in the United
States.
Business men in the UnitedStates are being troubled with the “‘silverinflation.” There is an immense and increasing amount of silver in circulation, and in the Treasury department, of which the real value is less by fifteen per cent. then the face value. If silver were only used for change, and the quantity of it were not in excess of what is required for that purpose, there would be no objection to so much token money. But the excessive quantity, above what is re- quired for change, causes the difficulty. Practically there are two standards instead of one, which is the same as having no standard at all; one recognized, the other unrecognized, in theory, but causing great perplexity and disturbance in practice. The danger feared is that, from this state of things, a recurrence to the double legal standard will result. And if every one were at liberty to pay « debt in either of two currencies, he would naturally select the cheaper, Contracts made in gold would be satisfied in silver, and the creditor would

The Fall River Regatta
Below we give fuller particulars of the | professional race at Fall River on the 20th. | In it there were thirteen starters, Hanlan, Elliott, Lee, Ten Eyck, Hamm, MeKay, Hosmer Ross, Driscoll, Teemer, Riley, Piaisted and Gaizel after 6 o'clock he men were iu line, and at 6.14 the word W start, Riley, Plaisted and Gaizel were not up to the line when the word was given. Plaisted was backing to hig buoy and Hanlan and Elliott had start- ed before he heard the word. The referee shouted to the men to come back and the steamer’s whistle blew the signal to return. Gaizel, Plaisted, Riley, Hosmer and Hamm came back, the others kept on, Hanlan well ahead. There was not much doubt on the referee’s boat that all men understood the signal to return, but the starters kept on and rowed over the course, coming in with leemer leading, Driscoll, second; McKay, third; Hanlan away behind and the others struggling in the rear, There was much growling when the referee declared no race

A wait of ten minutes was granted and there was then some further delay and it was 6,57 o'clock when the word was given fdr the start. Themen yot off this time pretty well, Hanlan shooting to the front on the east side of the course, with Eliott close behind,and Lee and Hamm several lengths behind and close together. The rest of the men were in a bunch on the west side of the course, with Plaisted ahead and not far be- hind Hanlan, who was away over on the other side still leading. Plaisted was forc- ing him for first place, and the race for the first half mile was a pretty one. The men on the west side of the course were out of their water and fouls were feared, but none were made. Hanlan made the turn first with Ross and Hosmer close behind, and turning near together. Hanlan had the in- side of the course, the hardest to row as the water was rough. At the start of the race ihe steamer Canonicas, Capt. Orswell, of Providence, went up river. As Hanlan turned the buoy she came down again, pay- ing no attention to the oarsmen, and

causing a heavy swell, which swamped Hanlan, Elliott and Hamm. MHanlan was then practically out of the race and pulled with difficulty, his boat been full of water. Darkness fell rapidly, and before the finish was reached it was almost impossible to distinguish the men from the referee's boat, Lee upset after crossing the line and Dris- coll drew out half-a-mile from the start. At the close of the race half a dozen of the rowers surrounded the referee’s boat, and several claimed first prize. The judges’ decision was—Teemer first, time 18m. 28s.; Hosmer second, in 18m. 30s.; Ross third, 18m. 35s. The crowd at the garden num- bered about 2,500, and probably 2,000 more viewed the race from other points. When the oarsmen returned from the first ay many thought the race was over and eft.
The close of the race was rowed in the dark, and it was impossible for spectators to distinguish the men after the first three- quarters of a mile. The prizes were: $500 to Ist, $225 to 2nd, $125 to 3rd. Distance, 24 miles with turn.

A Brother's Vengeance.
LORD HARTINGTON RESPONSIBLE FOR CAREY'S DEATH—SENSATIONAL STATEMENT BY A LEADER OF THE REPUBLICAN BROTHER- HOOD,
Captain P. J. Coleman, who was one of the principals in the attempt to blow up the Mansion House in London, makes the remarkable statement that the information which led to Carey’s death was furnished to the agitators by no less a person than Lord Hartington, under Secretary of State for India, and a brother of the murdered Lord Frederick Cavendish. Captain Coleman says his information comes directly from one of the executive leaders of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and he does not doubt its accuracy.
He says: ‘Lord Hartington has been the very apotheosis of revenge. He was de- termined to bring his brother’s alleged mur- derers to trial, and when Kelly, Brady, and and Curley expiated their alleged crimes on the gallows, Hartington, with fiendish de- light, gloated over their portraits. He was enraged when some of the men escaped the disgrace of the noose to undergo the miser- ies of penal servitude. His cup of revenge was not full, and he determined to sacrifice the informers who had been implicated as well. It was Hartington who gave us in- formation of Carey's release from Kiimain- ham jail, of the fugitive’s tripto England and of the steamship by which he would sail for Cape Town. ’
‘‘Lord Hartington asked us to kill the man whom the British Government had saved, but who, above all others, was pri- marily responsible for the tragic death of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Under- Secretary Burke. It was he who gave in- formation of the safling of Hanlan, Kavan- agh and Smith, three other informers, and it was through him that they were not al- lowed to land in Australia. He will save O'Vonnell, who killed Carey, as you will see.” a
Captain Coleman insists that there can- not be a doubt of the authoritative charac- ter of the sources whence this information comes.

At Rochester, N. Y., Aug. 16th, J. L. | Case’s Jay-Eye-See was called to beat, if possible, the best five year-old record of 2.15}, and he was greeted with cheers as | Bither drove him up in front of the judges | stand. In the first send off he broke at the | first turn and reached the quarter in 37. | Bither then jogged him around. At the) next trial he left the wire on an even and | excellent gait, reaching the first quarter in | 324. A thousand watches were held on him, and it was easy to see great interest pictured on every face. Up the back stretch he went with the same fast clip and even, steady manner, reaching the half in 1.05, thus making the second quarter in 324 the exact time of first. Then he seemingly slacked a little as he reached the up grade on the third turn, and, after passing that point. picked up again, getting to the three- quarter pole in 1.40, making the third qnar- ter in 35sec. When he came down the stretch the immense audience rose to its feet, and it was plain that he was going to make a fast heat, for he was Going fast work. In- side the stand Bither clucked and touched him with the whip, and the great animal went under the wire in 2.14, making the last quarter in 34 seconds. Case was in the | stand above the judges, and smilingly raised his hat as the crowd lustily cheered the successful effort of his horse. Betting was even up. The last event of the day was the free-for-all, with Fannie Witherspoon, St. Julien, and Edwm Thorn starters. St. Julien won in three straight heats. There was a fine contest between the other two horses, especially in the second heat. Fannie Witherspoon broke at the first quarter badly, but coming down the home stretch made a wonderful burst of speed and secured a dead heat with Edwin Thorn.

A Svuccessrut Feat.—WaLkING ON THE DeLaAwARE River.—An invention for walking the water was recently tried on the Delaware
Uver. The invention consists of two minia- ture scows, made of cedar, square at the end, and slightly bevelled on the under side for a short distance from each end. They were fitted with supports for eech arm, which also answered the purpose of assisting in preserv- ing an equilibrium. They were also titted with brass rods, which were used as pro- pellers, and to ono was attached a short rud- der, with a cord reaching to the hand of the pedestrian, by which the course could, in a measure, be regulated. ‘These shoes or floats were each seven feet in length and fourteen inches wide, and one was attached to each foot. When the adjustments were made, the man stepped into the water, and started on his journey. On account of the strong tide ranning atthe time, very slow progress was made by bim, but he finally succeeded in accomplishing the feat. The apparatus used by him is the invention of Professor Rowland, of San Francisco, who claims that he succeed- ed in walking across the bay at that place, a distance of three miles.
