The Isle-of-Skye | people—or “ Hottentots,”’ as they persist in calling | themselves, from Belfast and neighbouring settle- | ments—were in attendance with their piper, to the number of fifty or sixty; and although it was well known they had gone to Georgetown for the express purpose of creating a disturbance, fear compelled them to keep quiet tongues in their handsome mouths —they saw that the Liberals had a superior force, prepared and determined to preserve the peace; and the Skye-folk, acting

He (Mr. Beer) had indeed been a faithful supporter of the mon in power: be had, in fact, been a slave to them; but bis fidelity to them gave him no Tight to make over the votes and consciences of such electors as had been prepared tu support him to another. When, on the 18th December last, the Requisition from the Liberal Association was presented to him, tendering him their support as a candidate on independent principles, he at once prowptly but respectfully declined the honor ten- dered to him, stating that he had no wish to be raised to the position of @ publie character, and still less to connect himself with a party. During the succeeding eight days, numerous triends of both parties waited on hin urging him to come out as a free man; and at length he consented to their wish, on finding that, with the united support of both parties, bis election was certain. The Go verument party then offered te support him, pro- vided he would pledge himself to support them, but be positively declared that, if he went inty the House, it should beasafree man. Were he willing to go in upou the terms offered by them, he might, in such case, as well write his name u a ali < seg leave it on his chair, and tell them to use.Of if as hia vote in any way they might think proper. He thought the efferts thea being made by the Gevernmeut party té induce men to give their votes against their consciences, was a gross violation of the principles of the British Constitution. It was indeed as unjust as it would be to deprive a inaa of his personal freedom with- out cause, and to cast him into prison. Twelve yoarsago Reapousible Goverumcat was introduced | by the Liberal party. Since then the reins of Go- | vernment had been held alternately by each party. Ou oue decasion at least a tiv occuriel, so that they could net chovuse a Speaker, and it was found necessary to proceed tu a fresh election. So nearly balanced were the two parties that it was very uneertain which would obtain the preponder- ance. That shewed the benefit to be derived from a third party; and if, in the House, be could be connected with two or three men of independent principles, it would have a most beneficial effect in keeping peace between the two opposing par- ties, and compelling them to attend to the real business of the country, instead of abusing each other. For himeelf be wished tor no place, and would not accept of the best in the power of the Government to bestow. He, however, laboured under one disadvantage, which was that he was notauative. The plea of being a native was often brought forward in support of a desire for prefer- ment; but it always suggested to him the query whether the party using it had been away from home or uot! Ile considered it really no recom- mendation unless the party had visited other countries, and had become acquainted with their customs manners. A mere native was not the best fitted to legislate for his country. Johu Goff —a friend of Mr. Haviland — evidently thought the learned gentleman did not possess the requi- site talent, fur he came upon the hustings and re- quested Mr. Haviland to cut short his speech— said “ it was too long—the people were tired and cold, snd anxious te get home.” Mr. Haviland replied to this sensible advice, by saying that when the people asked him to stop, he would do so—as many in the assemblage, indeed, did; but the majority of the hearers were so much amused with the sharp repartees of the keen wits in the

| crowd that they were disposed to bear with the

infliction on their patience to any extent.

Tt is unnecessary to remark that in his speech, Mr. Haviland said every thing he could think of about the Land Question, and a great many strange things, tov ,were ewunciated by the learned gentleman. He commenced this part of Lis dis- course by telling the people that the present Go- vernment never gave any pledge to settle the vexed question —a misstatement of which Mr. Whelan did not forget to remind the clectors, wheu he ailuded to the platform of the Political Alliance Society, wherein, before the last election, the Conservative candidates were #pecially pledged to settle the Land Question, and establish a Court of Enquiry. He (Mr. H.) admitted that Col. Gray made some promises on the subject, after he beeame a inember of the House of Assembly, and in a spirit of pure philanthrophy, proposed the re- solutions which led to the appointment of the Land Commission. He praised the Award of

P| this Commission as the greatest blessing that was

ever vouchsafed to the Island—implored the peo- ple to support the Government, and they would, no doubt, get the Award confirmed, The arbitra- tion clause he considered a wonderful boon; but that was the very thing to which, he said, the Messrs. Montgomeries were the moat strongly opposed. He was their agent, and he resigned hie place in the Government because they were opposed to the Award generally, and to the ar- bitration clause particularly. He said they would not part with aa acre of their estates under the arbitration scheme; and yet he asked the tenant- ry to support the Government that would still con- tinue to practise humbug and chicanery in refer- ence to the measure. He said that the Messrs. Montgomeries were disposed to sell their estates to the Goverament at four shillings sterling (six shillings currency) an acre; but as the matter was entirely in his hands, he would not allow a foot of land to be sold if the present Tory Government were not sustained. Here was a wonderful proof of his sympathy for the tenantry! A bribe and a threat at the same moment! He lavished im- mense praise on himeelf for his s0-ca)jed indepen- dence in resiguing his seat in the Exegutive Council, because be could not be a faithful steward for the Moutgomeries if he remained there to practise humbug with the Government about the Land Commission, to which his employers were so much opposed, but which, he said, was such a fine thing for the country. He spoke at great length, and in most vociferous terms, about the Spy aud his wonderful report. He assured his audience, oyer and gyer again, that the Spy was a splendid man—-the veritable ‘*aviour of this country ;” bat in what way its salvation was ef-

Ilon. Mr. Heusley was the next to speak, and occupied only a few moments. He said that the political questions agitating the public mind in this Colony had been so fully discussed on both cides, it was unnecessary for him to go overthem He referred to his short connection with the first dis- trict, as a member of the Assembly — he said he had, to the best of his ability, advocated liberal principles; and if aguin returned, would be found cooperating with the Liberal party for the fur- therance of all measures that had the welfare of the country in view.

We had not the pleasure of listening to any of the other speakers. When Mr. Hensley concluded his address it was about fonr o'clock, and then the eleetors began to disperse—Our Own Reporter amongst the number. The geutlemen from the Isle-of-Skye congregated about Aitken’s, where their Celtic blood waa warmed by the fascinating strains of the bag-pipes, and by something even more soul-stirring than

“The war-note of Lochiel, which Albyn hills Have beard, and heard, too, have her Saxon foes,”’ and where a very excellent piece of entertainment was afforded to the spectators in seeing the siight figure of Mr. Duncan perched upon the shoulders of a couple of Skye men, who were content to elevate, scarcely for one minute, such a fine speci- meu of humanity, and then drop him as speedily as possible.—At this time, the Hon. Emanuel Me- Eachen, the candidate on the Government side in opposition to either Mr. Beaton or Mr. Hensley —and Mr. Dixon, on the same side, in opposition either to Mr. Whelan or Mr. Sutherland — had undisputed, possession of the hustings. We were tuld that both those gentlemen made speeches, but no one could tell us what they said. Of Mr. McEachen, the public have some little knowledge; but such as it ix, it is not to his credit. He no- toriously deceived and betrayed the Kast Point constituency in 1854,—and we are surprised that the man should have the effroatery to offer himself for the same district now. He has net the shadow of a chance of being returned, and his opposition, as he knows himself, is purely factious. — Of Mr. Dixon, we shall only say that he seems to be a very quiet young gentleman—with not a particle of dash or devil about him—with brains not exactly in the head —- quite unknown te fame, and likely to remain so for the term of his natural life.

We have no space or time to notice other in- cidents of the Nomination at Georgetown. We shall conclude by saying that a more peaceable gathering we bave never seen—the Liberals made an admirable demonstration of their moral and intelleetual power, considering the state of the roads; and high hopes are justly entertained that the most Liberal County in the Island will present a bolder front to the enemy than ever it did before.

PRINCE COUNTY ELECTIONS.

We haye received no detailed account of the Nomination of Candidates at St. Eleanor’s; but our correspondent, who has kindly forwarded us a list of the Candigates proposed, together with the names of their proposers and seeonders, as- sures us that the day passed ayer quietly. The Liberals ape yery buoygnt at their prospects of suecess everywhere throughout the County. We obserye, gud regret it, that the Likeralg have made a great mistake in putting ap three Libe;zals for the first district. However, the fizet distyict is so well prepared and organized that none byt Liberals can expect to be returned for jt. ‘Phe Conservatives have made a similar mjstake in the fifth district. that; but even if they had made no such mistake, we were and are sure of the return of our favou- rite eaudidate — James Muirhead, Esq. The Tories are dreadfully perplexed and worried at the prospect of Mr. James Yeo's defeat. It has been supposed that such an influential man would be easily returned for any part of Prince County ; but the hey-day of his influence or popularity has passed by. The district for which he offers con- tains an overwhelming majority of Catholic votes ; —any Catholic, be he French, Irish, or Scotch, who votes for Mr. Yeo, unquestionably disgraces himself, and will have the finger of scorn pointed at him as long as he lives. It is an outrageous piece of presumption for Mr. Yeo or any other member or supporter of the Goverument to ask for Catholic votes. The Government employ a public officer — the firat officer in the land — te publish the vilest falsehoods, blackguardism and blasphemy against the Catholics ; and for this they ask the Catholics to belp them to retain their offices ! Well, thauk Ged, the Catholies are thoroughly, closely united to reseut the abominable assaults which the Government have made upon their re- ligion—on the virtue of their wives and daughters— on the sanctity ef their priesthood; and to check the proseriptive policy which the Government would fain pursue with regard to the civil rights of the Catholics. They may point to Scape-grace Pope, and say that he alone has done the evil deeds, —but the Government who have continued that man in office are respensibie before heaven tor all his blasphemies against the Catholics and their priesthood; and, heartily subseribing to the faith, that retributive justice overtakes enormous crimi- uals in this life, as well as in the next, we feel confident that Pope's sins will be visited on the Government next Wednesday ; and that that day’s sun will go down witnessing the overthrow of the most despotic, deceptious, Ireachprous and con- temptible Government that ever diagraced apy

BEFORE another paper shall be issued from our press, and before the present one can reach the hands of most of our country readers, the political fate of this Island will be decided for at least four years to come. Never have we seen political combatants so keen and eager for a contest. The spirit of Liberal and Tory is thoroughly roused ; both are determined to battle vigorously for the triumph of their principles. We need not say to which side we hope and believe that vietory will incline. The whole number of candidates pro- posed in the three Counties is fifty-two,—and ex- actly twenty six on each side — for and against the Government. The twenty-six Government opponents unquestiopably include by far the most popular men; and we feel certain of the return of a good working majority on the Liberal side. The Bigots and Hypocrites who have raised, and are still keeping up the “No Popery"’ ery—pre- tending to believe that Protestant liberties are in danger — circulating the vilest lies in settlements where ignorance is the rule and intelligence the exception — telling their deluded followers that Catholics want to establish religious ascendaney in the land—let those Bigots.and Hypocrites take notice of the fact, that out of. the fifty-two candi- dates proposed, only ten are Catholics,—and one of those ten, (Emanuel McEachen), is an avowed supporter of the Government, and a traitor to the constituency whom he hag the impudence to con- front. We are ashamed of the position occupied by Mr. McEachen, We can only account for it on the supposition that there ia a serew loose in his upper storey. He has a very excellent mother, and two very kind, intelligent ,and hospitable sisters. The Colonial Secretary has declared, with the'appa- rent sanction of the Government of this Island, that those worthy ladies are prostitutes, as well as all the other Cathohe ladies in the land; and if Mr. Melachen will euppert a Government whieh pro- pagates such an infamous, diabolical libel, we must only say that we are very sorry for him, and are forced to believe that he is not in his right senses. It is some consolation, however, to know that this madman has no chance of being retugned to the House of Asapupbly.

ORANGE PLOTTING — A NAVAL OFFICER VIOLATING THE QUEEN'S INSTRUCTIONS.

Tur following very extraordinary document came into our hands about ten days ago. It was by accident delivered to the wrong per- son, who did not consider himself under any obligation to search for the rightful owner of it, and was handed for perusal to several friends. It reyeals one of the secret plots of the Orangemen to stir up sectarian bigotry, as a help to the Tories at the forthcoming election :—

“ CHARLOTTETOWN, Dec. 6, 1862. “Worshipfal Sir and Brother—

“Tam direeted by the Rt. Worshipful the Prov Grand Master, to notify youthat it has been deemed expedient to call a special meeting of the Grand Lodge to decide upon the standing point to be taken by the Order at the ‘coming elections, A meeting, therefore, will be held in Charlottetown, on Friday, December 12th, at 12 o'clock, for that purpose. The fullowing is the substance of the conditions, as drawn tp by a Committee of members of our body. which it is hoped will meet your approval.

“1. To oppowJe all grants for Popish or sectarian purposes from the public funds. :

“2. Toa any attempt to disendow the Prince of Wales College.

“3. To place all schools reeciving aid from the public funds under the same regulaifous as the Dis- trict Schools; and further, in ease of spplication being made for un Act of Incorporation to the Orange body, will the candidate give it his support?

“ Regretting that the urgency of the case, and the time of year, prevent the giving of a longer netice | have earnestly to request your attendance. Should it be impossible for you to attend personally, a Wrilten auswer containing your views of the case will oblige.

There is certainly nothing very horrible in this Orange letter. It evinces, indeed, the deep-rooted hatred cherished by the body for any and every thing connected with Catho- licity ; but it proposes to check the freedom of election by imposing at least one imprac- ticable condition on candidates. Orangemen den’t understand what freedom of election means, if it stands in the way of their own dark designs ; but the expectation which they encourage that their fraternity should be recognized by Act of Parliament — actually enrolled amongst the established institutions of the country — evinces a degree of infatu- ation which, we thought, such a body could never possibly reach in the overflowing fall- nsés of its madness. I{ Parliament should in- corporate the Orange Lodges, we cannot see why it should refuse to incorporate Ribbon Societies, if people were fvolish enough to form such Societies in this Island. But Orange Lodges and Ribbon Societies are ex- tremely disloyal. No Legislature can ever recognize either of them. The Urange Society has received many marks of the Royal dis- pleasure ; and public demonstrations of the Orange Society are specially prohibited by an Act of the Imperial Parliament. Not only that: Officers in the Queen's services of the Army and Navy are expressly forbid- den to have any connection whatever with Jrange Lodges. We have now before us ‘** The Queen's Regulations and Orders for the Army,’’ published by authority, in which the following Order is laid down at page 382 :
