What publisher Bryce, of Toronto, styles his ** Home Series,” and by Number 110, though highly spiced with sensationalism is evidently agreeable to what is considered as historically true of the early career of the Czar Peter of Russia. ‘* The Gun- maker of Moscow” is its title, and the author (Sylvanus Cobb, jr.,) bas managed, all through his narrative, to show the superiority of soul-nobility over the grand- eur and power of the patented article. Most readers of sensational fiction are dis- appointed if the ‘‘all’s well that ends well” idea does not mould the story, but no one in the outcome of Valdimir’s mys- tery in these adventures of the gun-maker, will be able to say that the Black Munk was not a ‘‘regular brick” at the finish.
‘** The Life and Love of an Actor,” by an actress, is another issue from the press of William Bryce, of Toronto, and as the title **Star Crossed” would suygest, is a personal yarn of crookedness trying to straighten out, and straight lines continu- ally acquiring a crook. The career of the heroine ends by concerting the stage trick of dying by a heart puncture, into a suc- cessful fact, and when all hope of a victory

Another of publisher Bryce’s publications is entitled, **Galloping Days at the Deanery,” and must have been intended for instruction of a rather fast description, and teaching howto be ridiculous. It is likely to be read by Young Canadaj with sume relish, who, while enjoying the dis- comforts of the Dean, will be glad to dis- cover that he gradually recovers from the spell cast over him by the chaste(?) Selina. It is by Charies James, well printed and spaced, and is an issue from the publishing firm of William Bryce, Toronto.

C., and Fielding, that Patrick Conno!ly, father of the late Mrs. Paw, made all his real estate and personal property, including the hotel St. Elmo, over to his son- in-law, (H. N. Paw) whose father paid ali the debts of Mr. Connolly. Mr. Conuolly, by his attorney, W. W. —Dominion Illustrated furnishes a por- trait of Lieutenant-Governor McDonald, and the fol'owing biographical sketch :
‘*The Lieutenent-Governor of Prince Ed- ward Island springs from the Clanronald branch of the Macdonalds of the Isles. He is son of the Hugh and Catherine McDonald, of Panmure, and grandson of Andrew Macdon- ald, who purchased a great stretch of land in the province, and with his family and retain- ers, emigrated from Inverness-shire, and set- tled at Three Rivers, P. E. I., in 1806, where he and his sons throve for many years. The subject of our sketch was born at the latter place, in 1829; was educated at the County Grammar School, and by private tutor; and married, in 1863, Elizabeth, daughter of a for- mer Provincial Postmaster General, Thomas Owen. Mr. Macdonald was U. S Consular and Agent at Three Rivers, from 1849 to 1870, represented Georgetown in the House of As- sembly from 1863 to 1870. He wasa member of the Legislative Council, for the second dis- trict of King’s, from 1863 to 1873, when he was made Postmaster-General of the province; P. O. Inspector from 1880 to 1884, and Post- master at Charlottetown, in 1884. Mr. Me- Donald has the high honour of being one of the Fathers of Confederation, having been a delegate to the Charlottetown Conference of 1864, and, in the fall of the same year, to the decisive Quebec Conference. He was also a delegate to Sthe Intercolonial Convention, at Portiand, in 1868, member of the Board of Education, from 1870 to 1879, andof the Fx- ecutive Council, from 1876 till the Confedera- tion in 1872. In reward for bis servicea to both parties, in the Free Education, Land Purchase, Railway and Confederation Acts, | be was appointed Lient-Governor of his native province, in 1884.”

There was an unusually large attendance at the market to-day, and sales were brisk. Messrs. Blake Bros’. display of Christmas meat, etc., was splendid. Their beef in- cluded the carcass of one of the Galloway heifers imported by Hon. Donald Ferguson, which killed wel, tipping the scales at something over 900 lbs; alsu Mr. Ferguson's shorthorn steer which weighed 930 lbs., as well as three fine carcasses af lamb—the best they ever handled—which «veraged 77 lbs each. The displays in some of the other stalls, although not fully up to the standard of former years, was uevertheless very good. The prices paid were as follows :
