—Montreal Gazette: Not a little of the credit for the magnificent victory in West morland is due tothe Hon. Mr. Foster The Finance Minister addressed several meetings in the county, and alwavs to the discomfiture of his opponents. He is un- questionably the most powerful platform speaker in Canada to-day.

—“‘Gentlemen,” said Orator McAlpine at Lutes Mountain, “the brooks are bab- bling and the birds are singing victory for Killam.” The Moncton Times remarks that Mr. McAlpine probable realizes by this time that the electors did not join in the chorus. And acampaign song with- out & chorus is & poor thing.

—St. John Sun: The liberal conser- vatives can bear to be told that they have been beaten. They have been told the

same thing constantly since 1878. With ever-increasing audacity the party con- tinues to choose the government and to exercise all the functions of a majority in spite of these snecessive defeats. Mr. Powell, who has imbibed something of the characteristics of his associates, will probably have the assurance to go to Ottawa and get sworn in as a member in spite of the overwhelming defeat which he is said to have experienced. Already he is calmly accepting congratulations on his success, and such is the perversity of human nature that he will probably re- ceive as many messages of the kind as Mr. Killam.

—Toronto Star: An announcement made in the House of Commons in Eng- land concerning the embargo of Canadian cattle plainly indicates that the action is taken for the sole reason of protecting the cattle breeders from outside competition. This is an indication that the free trade as it is in England is being modified, and that the statesmen in the Imperial Govern- ment have decided to let theories go and advocate what in practice will be of most alvantage to the people of Great Britain, whether ‘tlruns amuck of political traditions or not. Great Iiritaim is certainly the great- est free trade country in the world, and its people are proud of the reputation they bave acquired of being free traders. But at length it has been demonstrated that in every couutry a certian amount of protec - tion is necessary, and since this policy is plainly for the good of the country the Government is not slow in advocating it.

— Dr. Lyman Abbott, the able editor-in- chief of the Outlook, of New York, who is spending his vacation in England, points out in his paper a fact in connection with the crushing defeat of the British Liberals in the jate election which has not hitherto received much attentiov. The island Senator has at his finger’s ends a vast fund of information on the public affairs of the Dominion, and he would not be so closely allied with the great liberal-conservative party if he did not honestly believe their general policy best calculated to advance the interests of the country at large. With such men as Foster, Dickey, Costigan, Tupper and Ferguson in the Government at Ottawa, the Maritime provinces are iv no danger of losing the pre-eminence gain- ed for them at Ottawa by a long line of henorable names. ——i> -<>- <a NEWS NOTES.

Two matches were decided at the Rid- eau Range vesterday, viz , the ,Minister of Militia and the Dominion of Canada,

In the Dominion the first individual prize included the Patterson Cup and the first team prize cup to the battalion hav- ing the highest six meu. Patterson’s Cup was won by Sergt.-Major Armstrong, of the Guelph Field Battery, with a score of 97. Lieut. King, of the 45th, also made 97. The Cup was won last year with 97, but_eighty-sixes drew|prizes,while this yeor eighty-sevens were counted out. Yester- day the 43rd Battalion of Ottawa won the team prize with 544, while the 15th Ham- ilton and the British Columbia Garrison Artillery won the second and third res- pectively, with 543 each.

Sergt. Case, of the Halifax Garr's on Ar- til ery,was high man of those from the Mar- itime Provinces. He took the thirteenth place and $10, with a ecore of 93 Cor- poral W. Smith, of the 82nd Batt., P. F, Island, won $10 with a score of 92.

In the Minister of Militia Match, the three first individual prizes and the cup given by Sir Adolph Caron, and $35, goes with the first team prize. Private C. T. Burns, of the 63rd, Halifax, and Toronto Rifle Association were the winners, res- pectively. Private Burns’ score was 67, aud that of the winning teams 306. Lieut. E. Stewart, of P. E. Island, won $12 with 65; Sergt. Davison, of Charlottetown. $5 with 63.
