Britain Will Defend Bomber Bases Only

LONDON (Reuters) - Defence Minister Duncan Sandy: Tuesday followed the line of established Bltish policy when he said Brit- ain would defend only her bomber bases in a nuclear war. a British defence ministry spokesman said.

Speaking in Canberra. Sandya said Britain had decided "not to defend the whole country but to defend only our bomber bases.”

A government policy statement in April said it must be "frankly recognised that there is at prea- ent no means of providing ade- quate protection for the people of this country againa the conse- qucnces of an attacli with nuclear weaons."

The policy statement added that though fighter planes might be able to take a heavy toll d enemy bombers in a nuclear war. some t T . would inevitably get through.

Russia Says U. 5. Has Noose For Arab Neck

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia Tuesday charged the United States with using the "Dulles-EL senhower doctrine" to try to put the colonial noose around the neck of the Arab people.

The charge came in a state- ment on events in the Arab Per- sian Gulf territory of Oman ia- sued by Soviet foreign ministry spokesman Leonid Ilyicliev at a press conference.

British forces aided the sultan of Muscat and Oman to put down a I bellion led by the imam of Oman, a religious leader.

The Soviet statement accused Britain of using "inhuman" meth- ods in the Oman fighting and urged the United Nations to stop "intervention of the coloni -" in the Arab territory.

The statement said the "atti- tude of the United States in the Oman question is founded on the Dulles-Eisenhower doctrine. with the help of which the United States is trying to put the colon- ial noose on the neck of the Arab people. . . .

The urgent need for a 1.000 foot runway to accommodate four engine planes was brought to the attention of Hon. George Hees, Minister of Transport dur- ing his visit to the island yea- terday.

Mr. Hees. accompanied by as- sistant deputy minister, C. S. Booth; private secretary. Jack Hess; executive assistant. Mel' Jack and chief of navigational aids. W.J. Manning. arrived at the Charlottetown Airport. yes- terday morning at 9.00 o'clock.

He was met at the airport by local M.P's and M.L.A's and im- mediately started on an inspec- tion trip of Departmental estab- lishments in Charlottetown.

Although Mr. Hees was defin- ite at the outset of his inspection trip that he was here for fant- iliarization purposes only. the Minister later stated that he looked with favour on the possi- bility of providing Charlotte- town with a 7.000 foot runway.

He explained that it would be a matter of getting the item in the estimates as soon as possible and promised that he would do his best to see that the airport facilities of the City were brought up to standard.

Inquest In Crash To Be Next Week

QUEBEC iCPt-The coroner's inquest into the death of 79 per- sons in the Aug. 11 crash of a Maritimes Central Airways DC- i near lssoudun. Que. will not open before next week, Assistant Attorney-General C. E. Cantin of Quebec said Tuesday.
