The Wood Islands Service

No further word has been received as

't.o the decision of the Dominion Govern-

ment on the recommendations of the Cana- dian lilaritime Commission to build a new" million-dollar ferry for the Wood islands- Caribou service. and hand over Ullclkliloil Oi the service to the Canadian National Rail- way. The latter proposal is viewed with concern by the people of this Province. who have no desire to see railway monopoly re- stored in a matter of this kind. The ser- vice as at present operated has been instru- mental iii reducing truck rates on the Bor- ilen-"Iormentiiie route, and if more atten- Lion were given to the terminal facilities a greatly improved service could be provided at Wood islands and Caribou without un- due cost.

During the past season. both boats and the pier at Wood Islands were damaged be- cause of lack of water and obstructions 1n the dock. In the case of the ‘Dunning’. the propellor was so badly damaged that it had to be dismounted and sent t0 Ontario for repairs. After these accidents. ilivers were employed and the obstructions remov- ed, but the “Dunning” continued to ground repeatedly; at low water. 0n one occasion hitting the dock, when a serious accident was narrowly averted. As a result. the captain decided he would not attempt to dock the boat at low water, if there was any wind blowing. The “Prince Nora". a much smaller boat, repeatedly made trips when the “Dunning" could not safely do so.

To remedy this condition the Dominion

Government was repeatedly urged to eni- ploy a suction dredge to remove the sil t. and mud at Wood Islands harbour: but they ap- pear tlo have taken the attitude that when the service started it was never the inten- tion to accommodate boats of the "Dunn- lng‘s" size. At Caribou, suitable aids to navigation are required, as well as some dredging to straighten the channel to enable the boats to operate at night. when there is more traf- fic than the present schedule can handle. Overtime for the extra trips would give the crews some extra earnings, and thus Place them in a more equitable position so far as C. N. R. employees are concerned.

Another drawback to the present ser- vice has been the condition of the roads leading to both terminals. This was es- pecially true last November, when the bus lines to \l'ood islands refused to operate during part of the time, and the trucking companies complained that the damage to their equipment made the trips unprofitable. Another improvement could be effected by the extension of power lines to the Wood islands pier.

The prospects for the service at pre- sent appear uncertain. The operators claim that the regular subsidy and earnings will not, be sufficient to take care ot’ i949 ex- penses. notwithstanding that their wagc scale is regarded as unduly lcw by the Maritime Commission. Last year they re- ceived $6l,000 in addition to their regular subsidy to take care of pressing liabilities existing at the close of 1948, but no finan- cial arrangement. for the coming season has been made.

N0 doubt under C. N. R. operation the dredging and other requirements of the service would be more promptly attended t0. But why? That. is a question our rcprc- sOHtBllVGS at. Ottawa should inquire into. if ‘it is because monopoly of our transporta- tion facilities has been decided upon. and wc are to be forced to accept it willy-nillj‘. lll(‘ll it: is rvell to remember ivliat. uhually hap- pens in such cases. Before the Wood ls- lands service was established, truck rates at Borden were prohibitive because it was against railway policy to encourage coni- petitive traffic. There is no guarantee that we shall not be placed in the same position again, if we are unwise enough to consent to placing all our transportation eggs in one basket.

After weeks of futile efforts to reach agreement with the Federal Government for assistance in disposing of the 1949 crop siir- plus, B. C. growers have decided to make an outright gift of a million boxes of apples to the United Kingdom. And, taking the long-range view of the arrangement there is a possibility it may work to their advantage in future years. '

Under the agreement the growers will bear the cost oftransportlng the fruit to seaboard, and Britain will pay the balance ‘of-the charges for delivery to the United Kindest” '

being made “in order that the balance of the 1949 crop, which cannot be marketed on this continent, may be used rather than dumped on refuse piles.“ He estimated that cost of destroying the fruit would be as great as the shipping charges to seaboard.

One thing about mixed farming is the protection it gives our agricultural economy. We don't believe in carrying our eggs in one basket. Many a farmer today is thank- ful for the splendid returns from his turnips. As I sec it in the past either the producer. the dealer or some branch of agriculture have made attempts to introduce and recom- mend (‘hangcs. I feel that if an experienced dealer was detailed to_ go with one appointed from the seed branch that we would all be encouraged to grow principally B size‘ seed and only allow founda- tion and foundation A to grow to a reasonable size.

At the other end it would moan half the transportation, half the duty, half the cost of bags. half the handling charges at both pro- ducing und distributing centres on the farms. it would to n vcry large extent overcome seed being sold in the U. S. A. for tibia stock purposes. We might even have Ottawa and Washington get lo- gclhcr by our willingness lo be conscientious to have a larger quota on seed and eliminate table stock ailtogcthcr. ’l‘o have this idea reach it's goal we should have a Maritime Association of seed pro- ducers and dealers.

Librarian of Congress, that the library will photograph the 500.000 pages oft manuscript in the ancient mounts-l tery of St. Catherine's on Mount Sinai. These documents. which have not been open to scholarly examination in the past, are ex- pected to flash new light on many passages tn the New Testament.

St. Catherine's, once before. has rewarded the hopes of scholars with a great gilt. About a century ago the Codex Sinalticus was dis- covered there. After many strange adventures this Biblical manuscript was sold in i003 lo the British Museum by Russia for almost History has cast some of its romance on lhls‘old monastery.
