OLGA MAE SMITH

The many friends of‘ m. llld Mrs. Chester Smith, East Royalty, sympathize deeply with them in the loss of their beloved daughter, Olga‘ Mae. who passed away Sept. 29th at the P. E. Island Hospital at the early age oi nine years. Death was due to injuries received in an auto accident while on her way home from school and the best of medical skill and nursing was unable to save her life.

The funeral was held from the home of Mr. J. B. Andrew, Oct. 1st. and was very largely attended. Rev. Hugh Miller spoke words of com- fort and hopcto the sorrowing rel- atives and friends. Assisting in the service were Rcv. Dr. Vincent, Rev. Mr. Boothroyd, Rev. Mr. Palethorpe, Rev, Mrr Wilson and Miss Mary Ferguson, who sang very sweetly "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." The hymns were. “When He Cometh," a favorite oi the deceased. and "Safe intho Arms of Jesus."

The pail bearers were four of hei classmates, viz., Ralph Robertson. Harold-Clements. Lloyd Holmes and Alvin Andrew. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful.

Olga was an exceptionally loving little girl 1nd is sorely missed in school and Sunday School, but most oi all in the home. where besides her parents, two sisters, Irene and Vera, and brother Lloyd cherish the memory of a dear little daughter and sister. “Suffer the little child- ren to come unto me and forbid them not for of such B the King- dom of Heaven."

Stimulation oi growth by fertiliz- ing and cultivation in the rose bod should be discontinued before Sept- ember. These precautions favour‘ the ripening of the wood, which is necessary for safe wintering Suckers, that is shoots of briar. coming up from the roots should be out out below the surface, but beycund this the soil had bet- ter not be disturbed until the time arrives for the fall applica- tion oi manure, which should be delayed until freezing weather is approaching.

Unless spraying and dusting have been thoroughly done plants cf some varieties are likely to ahow disease in the forms oi mil- dew and black spot. To combat these enemies the plants should be thoroughly dusted three or four times, at intervals of one week with a mixture composed of nine parts cf dusting sulphur and one partof arsenate of lead.

Fertilizing '

Rose plans require heavy feed- ing to produce an abundance of fine bloom. Well-rotted cattle manure is perhaps the best fertiliz- er to use. A depth oi from two to three inches of this material should be carefully forked into the sur- face soil on the approach of freez- ing weather. Anothcr plan is to place the manure in the trenches- made between the plants after they are hilled up for winter protection- This treatment is also valuable in protecting the roots against heavy frost. In the spring when cultiva- tion-ls begun this fertilizer may be incorporated with the soil cf the rose bed.

Classified for Hardiness

While all rose varieties do not require winter protection, most of the kinds that are highly prized do need to be covered, in all parts of Canada, except the more favoured sections of British Columbia. The roses usually cultivated in Can- ada may be divided into four groups so far as hardiness is con- cerned, with rosa rugose. and hy- brids, Austraian brias, Provence or Cabbage roses, Damask and Moss roses forming the hardlest group- I-Iybrid perpetuals, or hybird Rem- ontant. climbing roses of the many flowered kind and dwarf Polyantha roses are included in the second degree of hardiness, while hybird tea and pematiana roses represent the third. Winter Protection

Roses of the first gIoup need little winter protection in many parts of Canada, However. in the Prairie Provinces where the country is open, it is desirable to bend even these kinds of bushes down. cover- ing them with soil and, where ever- green boughs can be obtained, to put some of these over them as well- More protectiui is necessary for hybrid perpetua‘, hybrid tea and tea rosa. One of the simpl- est methods is to earth them up six or eight inches or more in the fail. The base of the mound should be made broad as a. greater pro- tection for the roots. A light cover- ing cf straw, strawy manure or leaves held in position by evergreen boughs is often effective. This pre- vents sudden freezing and thawing which cause much damage to plants. Another method is to bend the bushes dcwn covering them with a. bottomless box left empty or filled with dry leaves and having a. waterproof cover. This plan. has been followed with success, particularly with Climbing roses, at the Central Experimental Farm for many years. Having the leaves dry is e. matter of great im- portance. IIf they are wet, as pointed out by the late Dr- Macoun, Dominion Horticulturist, in discus- sing th: wintering of roses, mould is like‘ to develop on the ap- proach oi spring. causing serious damage to the plants.

Preparation for Covering

The preparation of the rose plants for covering is a matter of some importance. Hybrid perpetu- ais and hybrid teas, which will require to be pruned back in the spring. may be shortened con- siderably before the covering B done, although sufficient of the plants should be left to make bend- ing and tying down easy. Break- age in bending over may be rc- duced to the minimum by doing the work on a mild day. even be- fore the time has arrived for put- ting on the covering. Pegs may be driven firmly into the ground a little distance from the rose plants according to their height and to them attached a strong cord. The plants may, then be bent over and fastened down aslow as is practic- able. The ‘ may l 0i some of the earth at the root will assist in the bending process.

Climbing or Pil‘ar roses which do not require spring priming should be tied neatly but loosley io- gether for turning down. As these are, as a rule, fairly hardy. cover- ing with an inverted through ~ of boards is usually sufficient. ex- cept in the Prairie Provinces. and in Northern Ontario and Quebec where more protcct’ may be necessary.

TORONTO. Oct. ill-In both pro- vincial and federal politics Ontario now stands shoulder to shoulder with seven other provinces under the Liberal banner.

For the first time in many years Ontario and Quebec will have 5n almost equal number of Liberal members in the House of Commons“ as a result of yestcrdays election. Ontario. traditionally Conservative, elected 55 Liberals and Quebec. traditionally Liberal, elected 56.

Despite the overpowering victory oi Liberalism Ontario as usual prov- ed the backbone of the Conservative party. By serfding 26 Conservatives to Ottawa this province made sure of the continuance of the Conserv- ative party as the official opposition and a formidable fighting force in the next Parliament.

Rt. Hon. Mackenzie King ls. the second Liberal Leader since Confed- eration to enter office with a sub- stantial following from Ontario. Not since Alexander MacKcnzlc swept the country in i874 have the Liberals fared so well or the Con- servatives fared so poorly in On- tario. In 1874 the Liberal following in Ontario was only slightly larger and the Conservative only slightly smaller than it is now.

Ontario, however, offered the only real resistance to the Liberal tri- umph apart from the Social Credit movement in Alberta. its LTITII- tional Conservatism centred round the city of Toronto but was also in evidence in the election oi Con- servatives in widely scattered parts oi the province and in both rural and urban constituencies.

Three of the seven cabinet rain- isters from Ontario held their seats, Hon. Hugh Stewart, Hon. Earl Rowe and Hon. Earl Lawson. The four who met defeat were Hon, R. J. Manicn, Hon. W. A. Gordon, Hon. G. R. Geary and Hon. Donald. Sutherland.

The new parties. Reconstruction and C. C. R. were not a factor in the contest so far as Ontario was concerned. The province held firm- ly to the two traditional parties and the only dissenter elected was Miss Agnes Macphail who scored a good margin over both Liberal and Con- servative opponents in Grey-Bruce.

MONTREAL, Oct. ‘5—Quebec's contribution to the overwhelming Liberal victory in Canada today reached the round figure of 60 as the big northeast county of Pontiac was won by J. E. Piche who re- signed from the Quebec Legislature to contest the seat.

Fifty six were official Libel-hi’ candidates while four others, no less keen Liberals, ran successfully as Independent Liberals due to their dissatisfaction with party nomination meetings.

HALIFAX. Oct. 15—With every Maritime seat but one captured by his followers and with three sym. pathetic provincial governments in addition, Rt, Hon. Mackenzie King will have almost complete support in the seaside provinces.

Liberal candidates made a clean SWEEP of Nova Scotia/s l2 seats and Prince Edward Islands iour in the polling yesterday and missed only the old Conservative stronghold of Royal in their conquest of New Brunswick. There J. A. Brooks came through with a majority cf 138 to limit the Liberal total in the three provinces to 25 out of 26.
