The most lonesome person in all the Old Pasture, or for that mat- ter in all the country round, was an outcast. No one would allow him to come near. And it was all because he had made a had mistake, Meeting two of Jimmy Skunlrs children, both much smaller than himself, he had tried to show off before his brothers and sisters by try- ing to catch and kill one of these little strangers who looked so harmless and were so unafraid. Then he had kncovn nothing about skunks. Now he knew plenty. I suspect he would have said too much. His coat still smelled strong- ly of the unpleasant scent that every Skunk carries ro-r his own protection, That was why he was an outcast.

South's original pass, North's opening spade bid. and South's two-club response were all unsk- ceptionable. The first question arises with North's rabid. While it is true that the two-spade bid was fairly persuasive and not open to severe criticism, it is equally true that North might have made a shrewder selection by bidding thrao clubs. Later, North Qaid that he had considered this raise. but hau rejected it because of the fear that South would then bid three notrump, for which North was not. particularly well prepared.

To this observer. North's reason- ing does not appear quite logical since he had no reason to iear three notrump reached in that fashion, but actually, of course. i1 North had raised to three clubs, South would have had every right. to bid five clubs instead of three notrump.

South also might well have bAd three clubs instead of two no- trump. but there was some merit in his argument that s mere ro- oid of clubs would not have done justice to this entire hand.
