‘* Bxpounding Blake.”

To prepare the minds of ‘the free and independent” of the Maritime Pro- vinces for the coming of the great one, the St. John Glod., the St. John Zele- graph and some other papers have re- cently been, as they say, ‘* Expounding Blake.” Now, we admit that to expound the transcendental ideas of which Mr. Blake, with his eye in a five frenzy roll- ing, has given ntterance, were a task quite beyond the powers of the matter- of-fact writer for Tue Examiner. Yet we sympathize with those ot our con- temporaries who desire that the people may be duly advertised concerving the leader whose advent they desire. To help them we shall, therefore, do our best. We shall, of course, necessarily, be ob- liged to covfive our remarks to the lower, less poetical, less supereminent parts of the speeches he }\as made ; and we must be careful also not to make quotations beyond the year ia which Mr. Blake be- eame leader, lest it should be said * cir- cumstances have changed and the hon. gentleman has alse changed —his opin- ions.”

In the first place, we may remark that to stir up sectional feelings and to make comparisons hateful to the smaller Provinces is not generally considered glorious work for a great Canadian statesman. Yet Mr. Blake has done this; and the fac: that he is emphatically a ‘*big fish” may perhaps be urged in justification of the ‘little fishes” down here who have allowed themselves to be caught with the bait of sectionalism, and | who are full of the opivion that this Island is prey to Ontario and Quebec.

From his place in Parliament in the session of 1880. Mr. Blake submitted an elaborate statement of figures, showing the revenues derived from each of the Provinces and the respective expendi- tures of the geveral Government in their behalf. And then, he said :—

“It will be seen from these statistics that some of the smaller Provinces, heavy

| bearing duty, and that while it is not

true that they are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to Ontario and Quebec, it is also not true that they are a burden to the people of the rest of Canada.

Passina ‘“Newson’s Furniture Factory at ten o’clock last night the writer noticed the machivery going and the) hands at work. Comment is needless. The writer is informed that Mark Butcher’s Furniture Factory is now run- ving thirteen hours a day, that they find it impossible to fill orders, and that busi- ness has not for them been so good dur- ing the past ten years. Workmen are busily engaged in fitting up the * Brenax Store” (which has been empty for several years) for Dorsey & Sott’s new Shoe Factory. We are informed that the Charlotte- town Cloth Factory, (recently established in the building which was emptied during the reign of oue-sided Free Trade) is now in full operation. Leading merchants inform us that this has been a fairly good year for them. Money is plentiful and they have now less difficulty in selling for cash than ever before. It is io be hoped they will stick to the cash system. Some dealers yet complain that they feel the times hard. But the reason is ebvious. There are still too many of them ; and itis clear that some of them must go back to the plough, which they should never have left, or off the Is- land.

Hotel keepers are doing a good busi- ness ; boarding houses are enquired for.

Real estate is still depressed ; but it is a pleasing sign to see properties, like that

The reason house prop- erty has not responded to the improve- ment of the times is, probably, to be found in the abnormal activity in build- ing maintained in the days immediately subsequent to building of the railway. It is to be noted that outside the city, property is on the rise. Some lots on the Pope property were recently sold at

Now here is a revelation, Here is something that must attract the attention of Mr. Davies, Mr. Farquharson and the editor of the Putriot. Here is a state- ment which wil! startle those persons who have been beguiled into believing that the construction of the Pacific Railway and the opeving up of the Northwest, would utterly ruin Prince Edward Island. Mr. Blake, the Leader of the Opposition, declares, not that every pound or every dollar, but that every shilling expended in the Northwest to build the Railway and to open the prairie up to settlement, is contributed by Ontario; and that the other Provinces (includingPrince Edward Islaud) contribute not one shilling! Well, Mr. Blake is we admit,a very clever man, and a great leader ; but if he ean make his followers, Mr. Davies, Mr. Farquharson, aod Mr. H. Lawson believe this statement of his and tell it abroad, he is a vast deal cleverer than we think he is.

The difficulty will be all the greater from the fact that Mr. Blake says in the same speech :---

** For Prince Epwarp IsLanp THE RE- CEIPTs WERKE $1,596,000, THE EXPENDITURE $2,624,009, -the deficit (that is the loss to Canada) $1,027,000.”

Last winter Mr. Farquharron made his greatest eflort in the Legislature to show that Canada was drawing from this Province more than she paid to this Pro- vince, the sum of $128,667.59 a year; and declared that ‘‘the aggregate amount which we have paid to Canada over and above what we liave received from Canada during the past six years was not less than $2,296 ,436.23!!

Looking on this picture, then on that, it will easily be seeu that there is a real mecessity for ‘* expounding Blake,” or blotting from the memory the drawing (on his imagination) made by Mr Far- quharson. No doubt both are great artists ; but it is hard to believe that they belong to the same school.

When Tae Examiner was, some time ago, compelled to point ont the absurdity of the statements made by Mr. Farquhar- son and the Grit press of this Province, it, at the same time, reminded the people of the Upper V’rovinces that Prince Ed- ward Island obtained a very large pro- portion of its dutiable articles of import via Moptrea). Halifax, St. John and other large sex port towns of Canada; and that, therefore, the bald figures as they appear in the public accourts are misleading. liut Mr. Blake says nothing of this—-gives the Island credit for no such indirect paymeuts—simply ‘states that the Islan has been a loss to the Dominion of over A MILLION oF DOL- LARS,

THe comet which was viewed from this city since Thursday last is, no doubt, the one reported discovered by Dr. Gould at Cordoba, and suppesed to be the comet of 1807, whose perihelion would occur about the Ist of August, when it would he seen to great advantege. Henry M. Parkhurst, the Brooklyn astronomer, writing to the New York Herald, says that be does not, however, believe that this is the comet of 1807, but a large eomet follow- ing in the same orbit, and he adds:—As that comet was net expected to return ffor 15 centuries, it seems improbable that this should be the same; but we had not long ago a discovery at Cordoba also of a great comet of 1843, after a lapse of only thirty- seven years, when it was not expected to return for many centuries. The suggestion was then made that as in the orbits of meteoroids there are accumulations of mat- ter at widely separated intervals, as the meteoroids have been shown to fellow the orbits of comets, and as Biela’s comet was divided almost before our eyes, it may be that there are different comets following in the same general orbit. If that is the ex- planation these separated bodies must be twice the distance me each other of those of the comet of 1843, and it is not easy, even rising above geologic epochs, to trace back these bodies, separated by an interval a hundred times the earth’s distance from the sun, to a time when they could have been together,

Sexing Park Scuoo.---The public exa- mination of this school was held yesterday in the presence of a goodly number of parents and visitors, among whom were Rev Dr Murray, L Miller, J D Seaman and D MeNeill. Among the ladies present we noticed Mrs McKinlay, Miss Maria Lawson Miss Millar and Miss McKelvie. The at- tendance of pupils was good. The classes were examined by the teachers, and by Messrs Miller and Seaman, eliciting the fact that good steady work had been wrought by both pupils and teachers during the term. Miss MeNeill the teacher of the primary department, showed besides the ordinary school work, a number of fancy articles, made br the girls of her depart- ment. Those who couldijudge, pronounced the needlework excellent. This new fea- ture received general commendation. Prizes were then distributed by the Chair- mav, Mr. Heard, and short addresses were delivered by Messrs. Heard, McNeill, Millar, Seaman, Miss Maria Lawson, and the Principal of the School, closing the work of the term.

Camp Svussex.—A correspondent writing from Camp Sussex to the Moncton ‘‘ Times,” on Friday, says: Things now look like busi- ness here. The men are all out and the drill g ound is alive with troops. There are about 2000, and 1000 more are expected. Four bands furnish plenty of music. The Wood- stock artillery, with 6 guns, look very nice, and Lieut-Col. Domvyille’s 8th cavalry, 300 strong, look fine—troops in blne and yellow; officers in blue and gold. Drs. McMonagle and Botsford are the surgeons, and as there

Rev. Howard Sprague moved a resolu- tion in reference to the appeintment of Conference Committees,which it was hoped would be the means of preventing confusion in future.

Rev. R. Duncan presented the report of the Missionery Committee, which caused a long and earnest discussion relative to ap- propriations for rent for several circuits. A resolution was passed referring the sub- ject to the Committee to deal with at their meeting in the fall.

Leave of absence was granted to several brethren to supply appointments in St. John, Fredericton and other places. SABBATH SCHOOL MEETING

was held in the evening, presided over by Rev. H. Daniel, who made some very im- portant remarks relative to the value of Sabbath School instruction. Rev. J. C. | Berrie, Secretary of Committee, presented a brief but very suggestive and appropriate report, supplementing it by some remarks relative to the way in which a minister might meet the scholars of his circuit. Judge Peters then addressed the Grand Jury, explaining the nature of the cases which would be brought before them, viz., one of larceny, one of cruelty by keepers at the Hospital for the Insane, and one cf nnui- sance by the Corporation against Mr. E. B. Leve.

The Judge carefully defined the duties of the Grand Jury, net to confine themselves to what they heard from the Judge’s charge, but that they must use their own eyes and ears, that they are, as a body, the index to crime, and that it is their duty to point out crime wherever it exists. Judye Peters spoke strongly regarding the Governer’s Pond, as being a nuisance, and remarked that on pass- ing over the bridge yesterday, he held his breath. as he considered it absolutely danger- ous. He advised the Grand Jury that the Mayor and Corporation are liable to indictment fora nuisance in peuring dirt, by means of sewers, into the pond, and if they could find a bi!l, they must present them.

Weregret that the acoustic properties of the Court room are so bad, that our reporter could hear but little of the Judge's very able charge.

Mr. J. W. Sefton has returned from his prospecting tour of the coal fields on the Rossian River. Ten borings were made in different lecalities defining accurately the situations of the coal. In four of them coal was struck at a depth of 25 feet. Tle seam varied in thickness from two to six inches , and extended in a north-westerly direc'ion, being at least three-quarters of a mile in breadth. Further search and deep- er borings were prevented by the fact that the implements provided were inadequate. Dr. Hannel, of Victoria College, Cobourg, has pronounced the coal to be a very superior article of the bituminous kind.
