FEARFUL STORM IN THE ATLANTIC. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY EMIGRANTS SAVED FROM A WRECK.

The storms which recently passed over this country aud Ireland appears to have swept with terrifie violence over the Atlantic. The ships Rhine and Constantine, from London, and the Lea and Resolute, from the Mersey, all arrived at New York in a more or less disa- bled condition. The latter ship on the voyage out, having left Liverpool onthe 29th, had met with extraordinary severe weather: and on the 25th January, when in lat. 39.30 N., long 68. 10 W., fell in with the American ship Bavaria, bonnd frum Havre to New York with emigrants. The vesse: was dismasted ubout seven days previously, and the passengers aud crew were found to be in # most deplorable condition. George Coles, (the indefatigable Leader of the Party,) in order to form the basis of a new Ad- ministration, as desired by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, The Hon. Patrick Walker was appointed Chairman, and Herbert Bell, Esq., Secretary. The principles and policy ot the proposed Government gave rise to the most ample diseusgion during the whole of Tuesday andthe greater part of Wednesday. New elements having been infused into the Liberal Party, there was a want of that unani- mity which heretofore characterised the private deliberations of the Party, and rendered the for- mation of anew Ministry a most difficult and de- lieate task, Which, perhaps, could not have been accomplished by any other Leader than Mr. Coles. It is needless to say that the latter gentle- man was confirmed in his positionas Leader witb- outthe least approach to opposition, notwith- standing all the idle town talk to the contrary. It is too well known for any attempt at denial that the protracted discussion mainly had reference to the appointment of Queen’s Printer. There are in the party several members who represent constituencies that sympathise with the Tenant League or Tenant Union movement, (though we thought that organization was practically defunct), and as Mr. Whelan, in his capacity of journalist, had given the most decided oppo- sition to the movement, his appointment was strenuously opposed as most objectionable to the constituencies referred to. Besides, Mr. Whelan had advocated Confederation, and that was regarded as an unpardonable sin by a sec- tion of the Representative Liberals. But the old party, impressed with the unquestionable elaims of Mr. W., sank every other consider- ation but his long attachment to, and services for the party, and contended for his appoint-

A terriivle calamity has occurred on the Lan- caster and Carlisle Railway, near Penrith. A wayon which contained five tons of gunpowder was thrown acrox$ the line when going south. and while it was still there another luggage train coming . ran jnto it, and the powder ex ploded. The driver and stoker of the second train were killed, ard immense damage was done to the property which was being con- veyed.

The Paris papers contain an account of the trial of a youth, aged 19, who kilned, under the most diabolical circumstances, a wowan of middie age, to whom his father, a widower, was about to be married. The unfortunate,yiciim had a daughter, about the age of the assay%,

The captain of the Bavaria asked Captain Freeman it he would take the passen- gers away, and his officers aud crew would try aud rig a jyrymast and make for some port. Captain Freeman at once complied, but seeing that none of the Bavaria’s boats were being got ready, he lowered, and two picked crews, together with the first and second officers, pushed off from the vessel for the Bavaria. Although it was only one }. m., still, with the sea running so high, the task was both danger- ous and difficult. Notwithstanding this, how- ever, the gallant fellows made four trips, and succeeded in bringing away 64 emigrants in safety. At4.30 p.m. the chief offcer’s boat was swamped, just after the emigrants had been taken on buard the Resolute, and the crew nearly drowned; and at 5.10 p.m. the second mate s boat reached the side of the vessel, in an almost sinking state, having been knocked under water by atremendous sea. Fortunately the crew, and 23 women aud children, were all saved. It was now getting dark, and the storm was increasing every moment; but Capt. Freeman stood nobly to the task he had under- taken. At daybreak on the 26th the Resolute’s hoats were again lowered, and after a series of desperate struggles at 8.30 a.m. 170 emigrants were safely housed on board the Resolute, and at 10 a.m., after giving some ropes, &c., to the

Mr. Bfight, in his speech in the House of Commons on the 25th, declared that within the last few months more than a thousand meetings had been held throughout the coun- try in favour of Parliamentary Reform, a state- ment drawn from him in consequence of the remarks indulged in by the preceding speaker, Mr. Lowe, the member for Calne. But these meetings have not ceased. In fact, thep may be said to be only commencing, which is per haps one reason why the two leading parties i: the House of Commons wish to have the ques- tion of Reform settled, without any needless delay. Ou the night during which Mr. Disraeli announced the intention of the Government to withdraw his Reform Resolutions and to pro ceed by Bill, a meeting of trades’ delegates was held in London, at which the offensive lan- guage used by Mr. Lowe the preceding night in the House of Commons was strongly comment: ed on, by way ofstimulating the masses to even greater energy than they have yet shown in the way of physical demonstrations. At this meeting held iu St. Martin’s Hall, there were present 150 delegates, representing, it was said, 100,000 men. It was proposed to hold svou, in London, a meeting of Reformers from all parts of the kingdom.

STATE OF SPAIN.

“The news from Spain,” says the Indepen- dance, ‘is very darkjand threatening. A per- fect reign of terror exists in Madrid. The alightest or offences are made punishable with death, and this punishment is not simply a threat. Fusillades and transportations are the order of the day. The prisons are glutted with captures. The most odious denunciations inspired by party hatred or private malice are received by the Government with willing ears, and yet in spite of this compression, which re- calls the worst days of the clerical reaction of 1823, public feeling revolts at the regime which is forced upon the country. Clandes tine publications penetrate the sone and even the Ministerial offices. A person found distri- buting some of these publications amongst the soldiers on guard at the Ministry of the Iuterior was seized, and, after summary conviction, taken away and shot.

THE HUNGARIAN MINISTRY.

Pesta, Tacrspay Evenixa.—The presen- tation of the members of the Hungarian Ministry to both houses of the Diet took place to-day. The Ministers received an enthusiastic reception. In the Lower House, Count Andrassy declared that the principle by which the Ministry would be guided would be the ob- servance of the rules of Parliamentary Govern ment. He solicited the support of the nation and of the Diet the more earnestly as the events which were to be looked for in Europe would exercise a decisive influence upon the country’s future. Me laid stress upon the fact of the fulfilmeut of the reasonabie wishes of all the nationalities of the empire, and expressed his confidence that the present tranquility would nowhere be disturbed. In conclusion, he hoped the Ministry would obtain the con- fidence of the King and the nation. Count Andrassy afterwards laid before the House four Government bills. Anotber fearful steamship collision, resulting in the loss of the Miranda iron screw steamer, is reported to have occurred in the Swin, afew miles below the Nore, The Thames steamer has returned to the river with the ship-wrecked crew, and from their statement it ayrvears that the Miranda, which was a fine powertul vessel belonging to Hull, left the St. Katharine’s Dock | in the course of Thursday se’nnizht for tbe North, in order to take in a cargo for the Medi: | terranean. About eleven o’clock at night she had reached the vicinity of the Gunfleet, when she hove to for the purpose of putting her Lon- don pilot on board a steamer bound to the river. She was waiting for the return of the boat which had taken the pilot off, when the Thames iron screw steamer, bound to Grangemouth from London, came in fearful collision with the Miranda, cutting her down considerably on the starboard side. It was immediately discovered that the water was rushing into her, and that she would not keep afloat long. The crew of the Miranda, after some difficulty, succeaded in getting on board the Thames, which also sustained considerable damage in her stern,

The news spread with rapidity, and in a few hours the whole county was up to fever heat of excitement. The gentry poured into the town with their families and valuables, the Railway Hotel was taken possession of by them, and a guard of constabulary placed around it. A meeting of the magistrates was at once called, who telegraphed to Dublin and Cork requesting immediate supplies of troops.

As soon as O’Conuor heard of the fate of his messenger he massed the Fenians and marched towards Killarney, with the object of rescuing him. On their way they attacked each police station they came to, and took whatever arms and ammunition could be found, but did no in- jury to the men. They were joined by several bauds along the road, so that their numbers reached seven hundred in a few hours. At Kells, a small hamlet four miles from Skibbe- reen, they sacked the coast guard station, took all arms and objects likely to be useful in their march. The Magistrates, sitting in solemn council at Killarney, hearing of the advance of this furmidable body, and no troops yet arrived, despatched a mounted orderly to Killorglin, ‘a small town some miles distant, to collect the ees: Another mounted messenger was despatched from Killorglin for Cahirciveen, but on the road he was met by a party of the advancing Fenians, among whom it is asserted was ageneral. The man was desired to hand over his despatches, but refused, and was imme- diately shot by one of the crowd. The des- patches were taken, as also his horse and arms, and the unfortunate man left weltering in blood by the roadside. He was subsequently assisted by a priest.

Loxpos, March 7th.—Despatches received during the day from Dublin and Cork give the following particulars of the last outbreak in Ireland :-The fight took place Tuesday night at Talaght, about eight miles from Du ‘in, be- tween the armed police and a Jarge body of Fenians—one of the latter was killed, and five wounded. The police captured 80 persons, and 6 louds of ammunition, Mp to dark to-day over 200 persons had been brought ito Dublin. ‘The main body of the Fenians engaged iu the fight retreated to the hills north of Dublin, with Ler? Stranholm, the Commander of the British forces in Ireland, in vigorous pursuit. The police station at Rilmallock, 19 miles south of Limerick, in the County of Munster, was attacked by, 200 Fenians, who were re- pulaed, leaving’ 80 of their number dend upon the ground, and losing 14 prisoners. The barracks of the police at Dromare, county Down, in the north, had heen fired by an incendiary, and totally destroyed... ..The Manager of the Union Bank, and a mounted Police Messenger, have been shot in Dramore. ....Reports from Dublin state that the various bands of Fenians appear to be well supplied with rations, and they seem to have raised suddenly in all parts of the Island. They attacked the Coast Guard, stationed at Kille- lagh, in the County Clare, and took away their arms.
