THE HERBERT FULLER TRAGEDY,

Exchangee at hand this morning are} filled with “details of the shocking tragedy | on board the Herbert Fuller, of which the EXAMINER was advised by Tuesday from Halifax. The Fuller, accordiog to one of the stories sent ont from Halifax, arrived at that port on Tuesday morning, flying the stars a d stripes at half mast with a black flag im- mediately under. This indicated mutiny, but it was learned that it was far worse than mutiny, it was horrible butchery. The Herbert Fuller left Boston on July Sth for Rosario with a cargo of lumber. So far as is known things went well till the morning of the 14th, whea Capt. Nash, his wife Laura and second mate Blaneberg, a Finlander, buta natural :zed American citizen, were murdered. sailors at the wheel and questioned him. The sailor instantly said the mate killed the captain. He said he saw the mate murder the captain through the wiadow. Lehan ordered the sailor under arrest, and he was handcutfed together with the mate.
Lester Monck says he was awakened by a scream which he took to be made by the captain’s wife. He seized his revolver and rushed towards the noise. He saw the mate rush out of the cabin and seize a plank with which he struck the woman, then taking the axe he smashed her on the head ‘and cut off both her hands. The mate then met Monack, who asked him what was the matter, and he tried to put him off by asking the same question.
Brane, the mate, said hedid not know anything of the murder until it was all over. When Sergt. Leban entered the cabin a horrible sight met him. The floor was covered with blood, ani the woman’s hair was strewn all over,where it had been pulled out.
Detective Power had the first mate stripped of his clothing, and stains of blood were found on them. The mate is the hardest looking man in the crev.
Chas. Brown, a sailor, gave a statement to Detective Power. He said: “I was et the wheel and Brane, the first mate, wae
on watch on deck. He went below to the foot of the ladder and rushed for the cap tain’s room, saw him strike the captain with the axe. The captain fell to the floor dead. Brane then rushed into the mate's room and smashed his head in. The sailor did not see him kill the captain’s wife.
According to another despatch the facts all go to show that the murder was com- mitted by the first mate. The motive was either robbery of the captain and Monck the passenger, who had considerable money about them, or else it was a crim- inal assault upon Captain Nash’s wife. Permission has been granted by the Can- adian Government forthe immediate re- moval of the bodies and they will be for- warded to Harrington, Maine. It is likely that extradition proceedings will be grant- ed expeditiously by the Goveroment and the eight prisoners will soon be removed to either Boston or New York for trial. Brane is said to be a mulatto, bora in St. Kitts, West Indies, but hails from Boston, having been naturalized there in 1883. Immense crowds have viewed the mutil- ated bodies, which are exposed to the public gaze.
The latest advices are to the effect that mate Brave protests his innocence, and declares that seaman Brown, who was at the wheel, must have committed the crime. Brown, as has been already stated, charges the first mate with being guilty. But Brown was at the wheel at the time the murder is said to have been committ- ed, and his absence therefrom for any length of time would quickly have been noticed. He could only have committed the crime by the collusion of the mate.

contraband Goods Seised—A Trunk With a Double Bottom,
Havana, July 21.—The police have seized several boxes of cloth: ng, 600 pairs of shoes and other contraband goods as- signed for the insurgents.
A passenger by the last steamer from Tampa abandoned a trunk, which on being searched by the agents of the police, was found to contain 900 cartridges. The in- surgents who surrendered recently at Campo Florida, informed the governor of a place in which 9,000 cartridges had been concealed. The ammunition has beea secured.
In skirmishing on the line between the provinces of Havana and Matanzas, te.' insurgents are known to have been kilied and five were made prisoners. The troops lost three killed and seven wound- ed.
A severe fight took place at Jaruco
province of Havana, between the Spanish column cowmanded by Col. Moncedo and the insurgent bands led by Sanguilly and
Dantin. The latter occupied an untrench- ed position from which, efcer an hour’s continuous firing, they were dislodged by a bayonet charge. The enemy were forced to retire after suffering heavy loss in kill-

The engineers and arczillery have suc- ceeded in constructing a road through the Artemisa swamp and opening com- munication between the railroad and the sea.
The new examination of the house ‘a San Rafael street, in which arms and am- munition were found concealed last week, has disclosed a trunk with a double bottom in which were forty-eight dynamite cart- ridges and an additional box of 1,000 cart-

Iv connection with the proposed can- tellation of the recently appointed Queen’s Counsels, it may be pointed out that there is more involved than the mere rescinding of the act of the late Government. Eves student of Ontario politics knows well that Sir Oliver Mowat has all along contended that the power to appoint Queen’s counsel was ves‘ed in the provincial authorities and not in the federal authorities, but no action was ever taken to settle the point. The Federal Government has for years been nominat- ing Queen’s counsels, and a few years ago Sir Oliver did the same, and there the matter rested, One of the reasons, there- fore, which has led the Minister of Justice to recommend the rescinded order-in- council is the point for which he has all along contended.
