It was sheer kindness plu 5 power. Jesus could never resist Such a plea. It was human need or sorrow that moved Him to action, and He needed no other plea. The old hymn: “He’s just the same Jesus” points the les- son that the miracle teaches us.

Jesus is “the same yesterday, today and forever.” Our feelings concern Him. He is as ready now as He was then to respond to the cry of pain.

But still more — it is the ex- ample of the Great Physician that is the drive behind all our efforts to build hospitals, to train physicians and nurses, and to provide treatment and cane for all who need it regardless of any- thing else in their race or class or condition.

ALL THE WORLD

Thank God, those ministries of mercy are now reaching out to all the would.

The centurion’s line spirit finds expression ‘in his answer to Je-. sws’ generous offer. He pointed to the fact that. as a Roman of- ﬁcer, he did not need to do per- sonally ’ everything that he wanted to have done.

He had men under him, and as he looked over the situation. that each morning brought before him. he sent one man to do this, anio- ther to do that, and called a pen sonal servant to meet his penson- all needs.

So he knew that Jesus had un- seen messengers waiting to car- ry out His will, and all that the word and the deed would be done. So Jesus spoke the word and the slave was healed.

The prospect that the stow- openss beﬁore us is as inspiring as it is wonderful.

The Lover of our souls can do for us all and more than all that He did in this case. Each genera- tion discovers some new fonm of His power. Modern missionaries discovered by actual experiment Jcsus’ power to tnansfornm melt of all races from the cannibals of the South Seas to the scholars of China and India.

And there are still richer re- sources in Christ which our chil- dren will bring out and use.

Nothing is more impressive in this story than the glimpse it gave Jesus of the wide world waiting tor Him. In that mo- ment He saw “nations hastening to His call from every dist-ant shore."

WHY HE CAME

He Himself, as He said. was sent only to the House of Israel, but, through those whom He won from among them, He would reach the world. This is one of the first indications in the Gos- pel story that Jesus came to save sinners from all the world.

One sad note is struck in this story of gnace and power—sons of the Kingdom will be cast out.

Jesus‘ rejection by His own people was already clear. It meant national ruin for them,

but. it was a tragic loss to Christ's cause.

By divine treatment. and train- in g through the centuries they had been prepared for the com- ing of the Messiah, and when He came they did not recognize Him.

Jesus’ description of the conse- quences of this failure is not a whit too strong: in His presence is light and glory; outside. the darkness.

MONTAGUE Flooding of the ice surface of the Montague Curling‘ Rink was begun over the Weekend and the ice committee reports the icemaking will be finished and the circles painted for readiness during the latter part of the week.

Members are hard at work each evening assisting in paint- ing, ﬂooding and other chores to assure a successful season.

OLE'VEILAND (APl—Steel pro- ducers are looking for a marked upturn in automotive steel buying after January, Steel magazine re- ponted Sunday.

“By that time the automakers will know how .well the new models are going over,” the metalworking weekly said.

The publication said the car companies won’t have to worry much about the amailability of steel unless there’s a strike. The United Steel Wlorklers Union’s three-year contract expires June 30. Other users of steel also are rebuilding their inventories, which means more business for the steel mills.

Donates Rink To Saint John

SAIlNT JOHN, NB. lCPl Mayor D.L. M'acLaren announced Thursday that Lord Beaverbrook, British publisher and benefactor of New Brunswick, will donate a new modern skating rink to the city of Saint John.

No value was given but the an— nouncement said the arena would be similar to the Lady Beaver- broolk pink in Fredericton which cost about $400,000. Lord Beaver- brook also donated an ice arena to the town 'of Newcastle. NB.

The rink is expected to be opened for the 1959-60 season. It is a gift to the young people of Saint John, Lancaster and the parish, of Simonds, and will be for the use of schoolboy hockey teams, amateur skating groups and youth recreation gatherings. No professional hockey will be al- lowed.
