Ncw ivhen the diamond nine was led, East correctly refused to ruff ln~—he discarded a spade—bui: this did not bother declarer. Deliber- ately shortening his own trumps, he ruffed the diamond nine, then led the spade eight to the ace.‘

A good diamond was now led from dummy, and again East re- fused to jeopardize his trumps. this time discarding a club. It he had ruffed. South would have over- ruffed, and in that way easily held to one trump trick. When East discarded, South threw off the spade king. and this, of course. left the play in dummy. Another diamond was led, and when East discarded his last club. declare:- ruffed with the heart six.

Derlarer was now reduced to the Q-B-‘l of trumps, while East had the 10-9-5. It was simple for de- clarer to lead the seven of trumps, throwing East in, and forcing him to return to a trump from his 10-5 to deciarer'e Q-8. The con- tract was "home."
