that St. Nicholas, under the name of Santa Claus, has come to be the great Christmas benefactor of children, Says

the New York World. Our old Knie kerbockers keep his festival duly on bis proper day in the calendar, which is the 6th December. But that day is kept throughout Continental Earope as the special festival of children. During the firet week in December, the children,in tne Low Countries in particular, have a little carnivaloftheir own. The con- foctiopary windows are filled with litile rgments of bishops modelied in choco », representing St. Nicholas of Myra, alter the likeness of his picture in the iamous “Heures” of the duchess Anne cf Brittany. He set -ome Of his abominable dishes before the bishop, who, instantly discerning their true nuture, reproached the in human wreteh with his crime, and going toa tub wherein lay the salted remains of three poor little creatures made over itthe sign of the eross. Tostantly the little ones arose, and were restored alive and wellte their mother, a widow dwelling uear by. This excellent bishop was the patron of pawnbrokers who seem to have been originally a con-fraternity of benevolent ricb people willing to belp the poor by lending them small sums on articles which they wou'd oiherwise bave been foreed to sell at a great sacrifice ; and the three golden ball», borne for ages as the sign of pawnbrokers, are beleived to symbo- lize three purses of goid which the good bishop cast on as many successive mghts into the window of a ruined noble, in order to save his three daughters from being driven to poverty ntoalifeof shame. How the Duten came to take St. Nicholas as their pa tron saint is a matter of dispute. They probably borrowed him from the Lom bards, <<

In the American (Cultivator, Ben. Perley Moore gives this bit of history of what might properly be denominated the first farmers’ ciub: “One hundred years ago, in 1784, a few Scotch gentle men, anxious to improve the agricalture of their conntry, organized a club at the exchange coffe house near the market of Edinburgh. There, once a wee’, in the enjoyment of an agreeable conversation aud &@ good supper, did ‘hose worthies talk over plans for the amelioration of the island, and from hat nueleus arose the now widely ex tended and powerful Highland Agricul- tural Soeiety.”’

After complet- ing my business circuit, I returned to Boston, and for eighteen months did not get over the shock. I lost my appetite ; all food tasted alike.
