This Week: A letter to the Liberal candidates

So, you held your Lib- eral leadership debate last Wednesday in the Pit. I hope my friends do not scold them- selves for missing it. I was there, and I know I missed it. I am sure that you candidates who were speaking definitely missed it. I can not really blame you though. After all, you are only politicians. What is "it" you ask? The point behind the whole exercise -- of course.

Let us face the facts. No one in the Pit was there to meet our next potential Pre- mier. The winner could be one of you, it could be Batman, or you could elect Charles Manson for all we care. Just stick you head through a nice stand-up painting of the Pre- mier and the newspaper will take your picture. All we wanted to hear about was the issues that affect our lives as students. Period. Donottry to relate to us, you can not. Do not try to placate us with fence- riding concern and sympathy, we willonly laugh at you. Just tellus how you intend to affect our lives. Tell us you actually discovered we havea future in this province. Just give us some hope, then gohome. We do not like you anymore.

catching us up in the middle of the night watching, you tell us that we get to clean up the mess. You have buried us in taxes and debt, all along bab- bling "That's the way ithas got to be." You hound us over our student loans, loans that many of you have yet to repay your- selves. We get stuckincrummy jobs that we can not even quit anymore because you have changed the rules for UI as well. Now, you have the nerve to come to our school and ask us to commit to you one more time. When are you going to commit to us? You call us apathetic? Well, you created us Dr. Frankenstein; and now your monsters have minds of their own.

We have seen the light at the end of the tunnel. Some- day we will be the ones in power, and I bet that frightens you. "Federal pensions" -- sorry, we do not have the money. "RRSP's" -- maybe we will tax them in order to pay off our huge national debt. What's that? You are worried about your retirement years? Well, I can tell you I am very concerned with that issue; but, there are many competing in- terests, all of which have to be weighed against each other. She turns to Melissa and says "What does your daddy do, dear?" Melissa re- plies, "My daddy is a doctor!" Mrs. Beazley then turns to Stephen and says, "What does your daddy do?" Stephen gets up, and in a shy voice says, "My daddy is a mailman." Next, she turns to little Tommy and says, "Now Tommy, what does your daddy do?" Tommy jumps up and shouts with great pride, "My daddy plays the piano ina Louisiana brothel! !" Mrs. Beazley gets so nervous
