Of course, in all those who desire to meditate with any benefit there must be an earnest longing for perfection in God’s service,

It is worse than useless to meditate if we do not intend to try to carry out the holy inspirations and counsels which come to us from God in our meditations. We must be in earnest in our desire to obey the voice of God, and hence we must endeavor to keep ourselves habitually re-collected and watchful against sin, and in addition to this, we must always begin our meditation with earnest prayer to God the Holy Ghost for guidance. AsI have said,

Here is another step, but even yet the meditation may be fruitless of good. It is quite possible, not ouly to recall the events by an exercise of the memory, but also to investigate them by an exercise of the intellect : see plainly what we ought to do, understand clearly how we ought to act, realize the truth or error of our pres- ent conduci, and yet not make any effort to correct ourselves. For instance, we take the parable of the Prodigal Son. By an exercise of the memory we picture the various scenes of h‘s profligacy and at

last we see him returning home and _ beg- ging his father to forgive him. So far we receive no spiritual benefit. Next our

intellect suggests that we too,need forgive- ness, and like the prodigal should arise and go to our father. The suggestion is good, but useless unless acted upon. It is necessary, therefore, that the third power of the soul, the will, be also bronght into play. We must resolve to act upon the suggestions of our invellect to first express our desire for the better things we have considered, and then we resolve to take some definite steps to obtain those things. Next our intellect comes into play, it cons siders the matter collected by the memory and investigates whatever is présented to it. We should ask, what have F to ¢on- sider about this point, either in’ its-rela- ticn to revealed trath or to daily life, or as it affects myself? solemnly resolve like the prodigal to go unto my Father and say un- to him, “Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before Thee and am no more worthy to be called Thy son;” and forth- with, acting upon this resolve, we fall upon our knees and in hearty sorrow for the past, confess our misdoings and short- comings to our all mercifal God—and thus our Bible reading bears Truit which it would not do if the will had not united with the intellect and the memory. We should always conclude our meditation with some short prayer and an act of thanksgiving.

Now, I am well aware that such a brief sketch of what a meditation should be, will not be very serviceable to any of you, of itself; but I purpose to give a short address in the shape of a meditation on Sunday mornings at the Il v’clock celebration. the Gospel for the day; and Task you to read it over beforehand and try to make

But these instructions being delivered on week day afternoons could only benefit the few who were at leisure to attend them. Now I intend, with the help of Almighty God, to extend them and make them more general.

The trade returns for the past month were issued to-day. The exports are val- ued at $13,572,817,an increase of a quarter of a million over Jast year. The imports for August are valued at $11,375,862, or a decrease of two millions and a quarter, A+ July showed an increase of a million and a quarier for the corresponding month last year, the net decrease so far this year is a million dollars. The duty colleeted to theend of August amounted to $3,745,834, an increase of $55,991.

While the tram was waiting at Calumet, while the passengers ate supper, Governor Boyd alighted for a stroll on the station platform. The night was very dark, and the hon. gentleman not noticing some freight lying on the platform, fell over the obstruction. He was severely shaken, and right hand sprained, his arm bruised and his leg cut.
