About the first of March the runners move out and the harness horses start training (there for the big program in Ap- ril. Charlie also motored to Hol- mod track where there are a e number of trotters and pac- ers in training and it is a beauti- ful spot with ideal weather pre- vailing. We have 40 entries in the No. 1 stake and 30 entries in the No. 2 stake, making a total of '10 entries. You will recall that last year we had about 65 entries in the two stakes with a total of nomination payments a- mounting to $1.100. This year we have 70 entries and the total cash payment is $1.600, showing an increase of $500 in the first pay- ment. O O .-l- O

“Entries came from every sec- tion of our Maritime Provinces with one entry from the Magdal- cnes for the No. 2 stakes. I have been told on a number of occas- ions that Maritime horsemen would not race horses for stakes as large as we are promoting but here is evidence indeed that our Maritimers are not only game but eager to support worthwhile pur- ses. It has also resulted in a much higher valuation of our 1o- cally raised horses-this ia as it should be because after- all the purpose of futurlties and stakes is to promote breeding as well as to race for money. We on this side have always held the Island in great admiration because of the number of owners who are always raising a good colt or two.

There ll a lot in Mr. Nelrna‘! remark regarding our Island breeders of trotter.! and paoers. A glimpse at the Victoria Driving Club's ice race summaries of Wednesday shows Nell Kalmuclr. by Kalmuck 2.15%. and Lusticia by Lusty Frisco 2.07%, forcing the winner out in quarter miles trotted in from 31% to B0 sec- onds. In the Class B Trot Guy Hflrveiter. by Slmcoe Harvester 2.04. won the first heat in 32 sec- onds. Others making a good showing in that race were King Grattan and Mac Watson. young- sters that will be pacing in 2.15 o: better this season.

In the Oiass A Pace there was locally bred Miss Victoria 2.12, Shirley H. Temple 2.14. Jay Volo and Gallant Budlong. Miss Vic- toria won the first heat in 32 seconds, then Earl's Prince Char- ming 2.10 wtdn the second in 31 seconds with Shirley H. Temple right on his pad. Miss Victoria forced Earl's Prince Charming to step the third heat in 30 seconds flat. We may mention the Class A Trot was won by itollle Wood's Arcfue Lee. that had been con- verted to that gait by Rollie and looks like a real trotter. -

The Class B Trot was won by Guy Spencer 2.14, now in his 15th year. He is owned by James Farrow, Magdalene Islands. and driven by Len D's/fears. New Brunswick entries include foursomes from Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton. Baihurst. St. Ste- phen. Campbeiltcn. etc.

Interest Mounts

Working overtime. the local committees have secured the ne- cessary accommodation. prepared the program and arrfinged the draw for the banner curling classic.

Island interest is mounting daily and despite the thaw. curler; from S-ummersidc, M tague and Alber- ton are readying themselves for the various competitions.

Highlighting the events of the program will be the play for the British Cqnsols Trophy emblema- tic of the Island curling champ- ionship. The winning rink will rep- lesent the Province in the Mac- cionaid-Brier Dominion Tankard play at Saint John in March.

Seven trophies and 60 individual prizes have been put up for com- petition in the ConfcderationBon- spiel.
