A visit to the stable of Clarence Schuman should reveal much ac- tivity during the coming week. Schuman plans on having two starters in the Dominion Day meet at Swnmersldc.

Frank J. Ortolan. Sampson G1?ady's consistent trotter of the last five seasons will be a strong contender in the 2.15 trot. Schuman

reports the big 1mm: behind in his training due to bad weather and other circumstances and he has not yet beaten 2.30 with him. How- ever he expects to go miles in 2.25 and probably 2.20 this week.

Happy Boy, a green trotter by Bud Axworthy out of Sally Bingcn and owned by Joseph Jockelman, Kensington. is schumarrs other starter. He reports this horse as training nicely and expects him to make a good showing 1n the 2.28 class on July 1st.

Schuman is also training Lee Volo, a two year old by-Colonel Aubrey out of Haste by Peter Volo and owned by Stanley Brown. Alberton. He expects another colt this week which is a free-legged pacer by Bud Axworthy.

“Mac" Steele. well known horse trainer and jockey, leaves tomor- row for Truro with the converted pacer “Soviet" who is entered in the 2.25 mixed there this Wednesday. Soviet is by Lee Tide and is owned by Andrew Perry, Summerside. This horse was brought to the Island through Billy Kcyes. He was sup- posed to be a green trotter but "Mac" has since shifted him to the pace.

Mac will be back from Truro probably by Friday and will start Soviet in the 2.28 mixed- Dominion Day. He will also have two other starters, Helen D. in the 2.15 trot and Bud Aubrey in the three year old class.

Helen D. 2.14, owned by Urban Gillis. Miscouchc. is working well, and is report/ed by good authority to have been a mile in 2.18. She will be a hard mare to beat in this class.

WTMBLEDON. England, June 24 —(C. P.-Cable)—-Cana.cla.'s active contingent in the men's singles oi the world tennis championships dwindled to one today as the first round of the famous Wimbledon tournament ended. leaving vast holes in the ranks of the invaders.

Bobbie Murray of Montreal, sole survivor among the four Canadians advanced to the second round by beating Troimcin, of France in straight sets. 7-5. 6-3, 6-0.

The great Fred Perry. world's foremost star, accounted for Marcel Rainville, last year's Canadian champion. downing him in three sets, 6-1. 6-1. 6-3. Laird Watt made Landry oi France go five sets be- fore he fell. The scores were 8-6, l-fl. 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. J. S. Olifi, British player of near Davis Cup calibre, eliminated the fourth Canadian, Roland Longtin in five sets, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Murray had a.n easy time with the Frenchman after the first set which he went after in determined fashion, forcing the play, hitting hard and waiting ior Troimcins errors. 'I‘roimcin appeared to fold up in the last two sets, apparently bafiied by Murray's speed and his own unfamiliarity with grass courts. Rainville and Perry had the hon- or of opening the centre court. The little Canadian showed fine form in his service but Perry appeared to be hitting harder than ever from almost every position. He- galloped through the first set in 16 minutes and the second in 14. Experts said they were impressed by Rainviile but that he appeared to lack ex- perience in net play. There was punch in his groundstrokes and ser- vioc but the experm said he ap- peared to need intensive practice to give him all-round control.

Watt came within match point of beating Landry with games at 5-4 in the last set. but poor placing lost him the match. He gave a. good account of himself against the ex- perience of the Frenchman but ap- peared over-anxious at times.

Continuing to display smart field- ing and timely hitting, the Holy Redeemer baseball team last night won their second straight victory in the City Baseball League race when they turned back the luckless Holy Name Club Falcons 6-4, their vic- tory sending them into undisputed third place i.n the standing, and at the same time marking the sixth consecutive defeat suffered by the Falcons. As haslbeen the case in the lust number of games, the en- counter was close and hard-fought throughout; for the most part 1t was a dandy pitcher's battle between young "ry" Connors of the winners and George Ayers of the losers, with the former hurler being declared the winner, but only by the fact that he received much bettersupport than that accorded his opponent.

The winners drew first blood as "Tick" Williams, the first batter, hit safely and after pilfering second, scored on Cronin-rs single through first. They increased their margin to three in the fourth as the first two batters were safe on errors pav- ing the way for “Shon.na" Francis to drive thcm across the plate with a ringing single through second.

Falcons, held to one hit in the first four innings, banged out two doubles in the fifth to account for their first run, only to have the win- ners get it back in the sixth. Frank Cronin doubling with Williams parked on second through another error. Still battling, the losers ran the count to 4-2 in the seventh when Gillis singled with one down, stole second and then crossed the plate on Doyle's double to right. Taking heart the Falcons made it 4-al1 in the eighth, three straight hits accounting for the much-need- ed equalizers.

MUIRFIEZLD, Scotland. June 24— (C. P.-A. P. Gablesl-Macdonald Smith, who by his own admission grows better with age, shot one of the greatest rounds of his long car- eer-a six-under-par 66-40 lead a field of upwards of 250 at the half- way point today in the 36-ho1e qual- ifying cnmpetition of the British open golf championship.

Cedric Sayner. a British profes- sional from Birkdale near South- port. toured the long and windy Gullane course almost as sensa- tionally. He caxded a 68 that made him second best of the day's sharp-shooters.

The final ill-hole trial round will be played tomorrow. Thereafter the competition will be limited to the 100 low scores and ties for the '72-hole championship proper, which starts Wednesday over the Muir- field course. Half the field today played Muirficld the other half Gullane. Tomorrow they will switch over. so that all competitors will have a round on each course.

Richard Burton. n young British pro, led the Muirfield brigade wzth a two-undcr-par 70. He established a. new competitive record for the altered course although three strokes short of‘ equalling Walter Hageirs 67 in the second round of the championship there six years ago. The defender. Henry Cotton, turned in a useful '71.
