Former Island Couple Visited In Alberta

(The following account of a for- mer Prince Edward Island couple has been received from Rev. J. V. gowsy of Okotoks, Alberta. who was ordained in Trinity Church Charlottetown. in 1013 and left directly afterwards for‘ Alberta, where he has since resided.)

Nestled neatly against the north bank of Sheep Oreeloin a wide crescent which extends half a mile from the water's edge about two miles west of Okotoks, Alberta, ls a humble home too large to be des- cribed as a cottage and too old to look modern. This is the home n‘! two most interesting persons. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Henry Dun- can, both in the eighties.

It is said many friends and re- latives have had t.‘ turn at trying to persuade these people to move into town where th~re might be many comforts denied them on the farm. But no siree. they have lived hero since coming frorri- Prince Ed- ward Island in 1908 now almost forty years ago and here they want to continue to live. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan were both born in prince Edward Island. Mrs. Duncan taught school for several years before settling on the farm with Mr. Duncan. They lived at (Jentre Royalty two and a half miles north of Charlottetown.

In 1005. althouih neither of them was very young, they‘ were both caught with the "Go west" fever. and decided to take a look. They ccmg to Okotoks and falling in love with thé little farm decided to buy. It was their hope that the change would improi-e Mr. Dun-

"To everything there is a season." said the Preacher long ago. and. though his llstdid not specify a. time to remember, yet surely in every organization and in every community there comes a time to call up the poet, and. in the light of former achievements and disappointments. of almost forgotten triumphs and defeats. to set s. truer course for the future. The time has come for Bedeque to remember that 1948 marks the completion of sixty years of Divine worship in the present United Church, and one hundred and thirty years since the people called Wesleyans first built a small Methodist chapel in Bedeque.

The history of Bedequs, like that of her Island mother on whose southern shore she nestles, is the short and simple story of successive generations of fsrplers earning a living from the soil. conditioned by the uplifting presence of church and school; and it is this story which we'll briefly sketch.

"The let Place"

Long before the white man came to Bedeque. the Miomse Indians knew the river, its green marshes and fine timber-ed shore as Dptek. "the hot place." When the French came in 1150 they must have found it warm too. for they changed the original name only slightly at first calling it Bedec which soon evolved into the typical French form of Bedeque. Stu! later in 1164 when the English casne to map the Island. Captain Holland. Chief Surveyor, though he named one hundred and fifty prominent Island features for a numerous acquairrtanceshtp, from his clooksnakeo- to his king, must too have found. the plaice warm be- cause he retained the name Bedeouc as an alternate title for the wat- ers adjoining the Hot Place, naming it Halifax or Bedieque Bay.

The first white settlers to disturb the red man's solitude came to Bodeque in 1150. They were “plow-men" from. Acadia. with their wives and children, pawns in the ganle of empire. who, induced by the offer of ‘three years’ subsistence and compensation for their losses, were persuaded to forsake their pleasant homesdn Nova. Scotia which came under British sovereignty in 1148 and to preserve their llrench citizen- ship in the Island of Saint John which was still s. domain of the king of France. Though thrifty and hard-working they invariably settled near the marsh-lands of our various Island bays and rivers, obviously for the marsh hay which could be gathered with comparative ease.

In 1152 four families wan settled along the shore of North Bsdeque with four on the south side making a total of forty-two persons in all. The last French census taken in 1153 showed s. population of one hun- dred and one. What it was in 1158 may only be surmised. probably no more than one hundred and fifty. This was the year of the capture of Louisbvilrg and. the surrender of the Island of Saint John to the British; with the evacuation in October of practically all its Aoadian inhabitants. War in any aspect is cruel but never more so than in its dealings with the innocent tellers of the soil. Bedequefis first settlers enjoyed at the most only an eight-year stay. Induced to its shores by their own super-patriots who did not wish them to take the oath of allegiance to the Biritish in Nova. Scotia, they we're this time given no choice of becoming British subjects. but bundled into transports. some of which foundered en route. were unceremoniously returned to the shores of their unwelcomirlg mother country.

‘Throughout the Island the homes. stores and churches of the Acadians were burned to the ground in accordance with the orders issued to the troops but in several places the careless soldier failed. to raze the buildings. and. in Bedeque for one. they remained desolate reminders to the Indians passing up and ciownlthe bay. of friends who had. come and gone. Some of thme thirty-year-old French houses were still more or less habitable when the first English speaking settlers came to Bedeque in 1184. From old plans of townships number 25 and 26 in the Registry office at Charlottetown it may be surmised that there were probably fifteen or sixteen French buildings still standin8 in Bedeque in 1182 with the largest number on the south side. and clearings of two hundred acres or more overgrown again with young trees. ‘In 1152. shortly after Bedeque had been settled by the Acadians. the laiflest clearing had been on the north side where one family with six men over eighteen years of age (a very unusual family-five being umriirried) had'cleared sufficient land to sow sixteen bushels of wheat; while neighboring homes with only one to chop and hoe had but a garden each. To these deserted houses and overgrown gardens. came the United Empire Loyalists. The l-Ioopers. Robins, Schurmans and lllhlgbrts as typical Loyalist families had much in common with the ‘ Aeadians. the LeJeunes, aobichauds, and Terriauds into whose labours they had entered. Both alike as refugees knew the bitter taste of defeat. the cruel severance of well-loved ties which bind a farmer to the soil and the heart-breaking toil of starting anew in the wilderness. » ' First Loyalist;

‘ Who were the first Inyalists to settle in Bcdeque? We do not know. Erlsign John Robins of the King's Rangers came to "Charlotte Town" March 11, 1102, as junior officer of the garrison. A letter signed by him and several of his fellow officers which appeared in a New York newspaper of April i182 advising prospective emigrants that our filand "soil was good, the water excellent. the harbours spacious. the govern- ment mild, the cattle plant - - -" was doubtless instrumental in at- tracting a number of Loyallsts here. Ensign Robins. his father Richard Robins. Thomas Hooper and William Schurmsn. late of Shelbourn . were at Charlottetown early 1n May of 1184 presenting a memorial to the Governor-in-Coiulcll and asking for "singular choice" in differ- .cnt lots of land to be granted to refugees. They had been doubtless looking over Bedcque because the governor in his reply offered Hooper and Schurman ("and any others they may choose for psrtpers") leases of large areas in Lot 28 with the option of buying in twelve months time at the rate of two dollars an acre. These men were evi- dently' a delegation acting on behalf of other Loyalists temporarily settled at Shelburne.‘ The flat. large body of settlers came to Bedeque by ship from Shelbume in July of 1184. .

There were ten families of Loyaiists or "Loyal Refugees": William Wright, John McDonald. Jacob Silliker, Nathaniel Wetherell, John Murray, David Stags, Sarah Palmer and William Stairman (Schur- maM). In addition there were the following unmarried Loyalists, Robert Hancock, Lawrence Berry, John Murray, Andrew Eastman. Jurnes Wharf twaughi), Jessie Strang and Nathaniel Wright. Also in the some ship were the following disbanded soldiers: George Malby (Mabey?) and wife. Richard Moorfleld and wife; and single men: John Shllfox, Dudley Wells. Robert Hamock, Thomas Gould, John Chambers. William SauchabsckWScncabougM), Richard Price. Joseph "Wood and Richard Garrett. Not all of these settled at Bedeque and indeed not all stayed on the Island. It is conservatively estimated that by the fall of i186 over half of the Loyalists who came to the Island in the period 1788-1706 had left on learning how ihc landlords were inter- preting the spparently generous terms on which the government had offered the land. "

Early Hardship!

When the Loyalists came to Bedequo in 11M they entered en's relatively short period of hardship. but, for a people who‘ had been settled in the Asncrican colonies for at least two generations and had arrived at considerable affluence, it was like turning back a page in their history to re-enact their father's alfl grandfather's pioneering in New York. New Jersey and other American colonies. small families in two roomed log cabins lived luxuriously the first wlnterwhile large families in one-roolned homes found the conditions crowded. Some foods were plentiful: bar clems. quahaugs, grandfather lobsters weigh- ing ten’ pounds each. the choicest oysters of the continent. trout, sai- mon and eels could be had in and around the Dunk or other nearby harbors witnoutdhyoneb leave or license. Those without flour took ‘their wheat to Tryon where John Gouldrup ran one of the early grist onils of prince County. In Bedequeu first store. William Sohurman, from November 1184 on. was prepared to help the settlers with moderate amounts of credit. He supplied the cunmunity with broadcloth, bohea tea, salt, strap iron, leather, lumber. scythee. West India brown sugar, west India rum. calico. ha ‘ emhiafs and ribbons. Tea and salt may have been considered most essential but rum and ribbons were most popular. Rum and ‘ribbons. the stimulant and vanity of the Bedequers of 1185. were given a place in the community no different from that accorded them in other places of pioneer settlement where a change of ribbons
