Cultural Diversity Close to Home: Celebrating UPEl’s First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples

The UPEI First Nations, Inuit and Metis Students Group has been established to allow students the opportunity to celebrate and educate others of the diversity on campus. Students involved in the new Student Advocacy and Support Services (SASS) have identified the need for such a group with the hope of creating a connection and sense of community for those who are First Nations, Inuit and Metis. Not only will the group promote an understanding of the differences and similarities among us, it will provide a chance to share with others the pride we have in our culture and ourselves.

UNIVERSITY TORONTO The creation of this group gives us the opportunity to break down

| Projects and programs are also being developed to address the

# concerns regarding systemic inequalities, in the attempt to educate

and promote awareness. By opening the lines of communication,

we can learn from each other and make a difference in areas that have been stigmatized or faced with discrimination.

Plans are also underway to organize a festival of events in the New Year to share some of the talents of those individuals in our local First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities. This could include dancing, drumming, singling, talking circles, traditional teachings and ceremonies. this will be a wonderful opportunity for artists, lead- ers and elders to share their spirit and wisdom. It will also convey a the message that UPEI welcomes all individuals regardless of cul- ture, ethnicity or background. Diversity is the key to change and the
