The apartment was so situated, and the frames of the plate-glass windows so well mede and subetantial, that, let a storm blow a thonsana ships ashore, it could not be felt, nor heard, in Wardlaw’s inner office.

But appearances are deceitful; and whe can wall aut a sea of troubles, and the tem- pests of the mind?

The inmate of that office was -battling for his commercial existence, uuder accn-

mulated difficulties and dangers. Like those who sailed the ‘Proserpine’s’ long-

boat, upon that dirty night, which so nearly swamped her, hiseyes had now to be on every wave, and the sheet forever in his hand.

His measures had been ably taken; but, as will happen when clever men are driven into a corner; he had backed events rather ‘too freely against time; had allowed too slight a margin for unforeseen delays. ~ For instance, he had averaged the ‘Shannon's’ | previous performances, and had calculated on her arrival too nicely. She was a fort- /night overdue, and that delay bronght | peril. | Hehad also counted upon getting news of the ‘Proserpine.’ But not a word had ‘reached Lieyd’s as yet. | At this very crisis came the panic of ’66. | Overeend and Gurney broke; and Ward- law's cxperience ted -him to fear that, ;sooner or later, there would be a run ow ‘every bank in London. Now he had | borrowed £80,000 at one bank, and £25,000 ‘at another: and, without his ships, could ‘not possibly pay a quarter of the money. If the banks in qnestion were ran upon, \and obliged to ca'l in all their resources, his credit must go; and this, in his _pre- carious position, was ruin, ' He had concealed his whole condition Indeed, hé had only two confidents in the werld; poor old Michael Penfold, and

those two he made half confidances. He dared not tell either of them all he had done, and all he was going to do.

His redeeming feature was as bright as fever. He etiil loved Helen Roelleston with a chaste, constayt, and ardent affection that did him honor. He loved money too well; but he loved Helen better. In all his tronbles and worries, it was his own con-

‘The Digby Disaster.

A NEW STEAMER LOST — EIGHT MEN DROWNED.

The newly-built Government steamer ** Princess Louise” was succesefally Jaunech- ed on Saturday, from the shipyard. of Jotham O'Brien, at Maccan, and aSt John Steauitag, taking her in tow, proceeded to Wdod Point to ohic her ae the care of the Yominion steamer ** Newfield,” Captain Guildford, Here a new steel wire tow-line was adjusted and the two vessels got uuder way for Halifax. On board the *‘ Princess Louise” were Captain Daviel Browne, Sn- perintendent of Lighthuuses, and a crew numbering eight men and one boy, the latter being an assistant of the ‘‘ Newtield’s” steward,

The work ef towing the “Princess Louise” proceeded without mishap until early this mtiing. A severe gale prevailed, the wind blowing wih extreme violence, snow falling heavudy and a rough sea running, About a quarter to four the two ships were passing sbout a mile below Digby Gut, when the wire hawser, strained severely by the continual pitching of the vessel, sud- denly snapped. Capt. Browne, at the wheel of the ‘*Princess Louise,” could see a short distance away the light on Point Prim, Aware that it was impossible to prevent the vessel from running ashore, he attempted to head her for a leas dangerous

part of the thore than that towards which she was being’ fast driven by the raging tempest, but the

great violence of the wind and the strong, inflowing tide were to much, and the efforts made tochange her course were useless, She was carried directly against a square bluff rock, striking with great violence, aud immediately keeled over on her side. Waves of preat size began at once to sweep over her, carrying everything before them, and svon all those on deck, including Cap- tain Browne and seveu others, were swept into the sea, and drowned, James Dene, the boy belonging to the ‘*Newfield,” and Richard Soy, a seamen engaged at Maccan, were below at the time, and staying there antil after the tide had receded, they then lowered themselves by a rope over the side and safely reached the shore.

The two survivors state that at the time the tow line parted they were in the cabin. Before they could do anything the vessel had struck, listed over toward the sea, and all on deck were washed off and lost, After the tide had ebbed, sufficiently, Dene and Soy broke epen the cabin skylight, and obtaining a rope, the latter lowered the boy over the side and then followed himeelf. Both reached dry land safely, but Dene was in a very exhausted condition, and Soy, though also very weak, had to help him Finally Soy went ahead in search of a house, and soon finding one, several of iis occupants started out to bring in his companion.
