Eastern Presbytery Young People's Rally
The Spring Rally of the Young People's Unions of the Eastern Presbytery was held recently in Pownai United Church.
The afternoon session opened with an impressive worship ser- vice led by the members of South Winsloc Y. P. U. with Helen Rodd presiding. Othcrs taking part were Fiorc-nce Gillespie, Eleanor Rodd, Janet Skinner and Doris Hughes.
A most cordial welcome was ex- tended by Dorothy Ings of Pow. nal which was re onded to by Ralph Rjlynor of M . Herbert.
The vice-president, Evelyn Un- derhay, York, capably conducted the business period. The minutes of the Fall Rally were read by the secretary and approved as read.
In the absence of the Prcsident, Mrs. Lloyd Fraser, her report was road by lial-ph Raynor. The Sec. retary Treasurer report was read by Parker Jewell.
The following committees were appointed: Resolutions - Ralph Raynor, Stewart Smith, Blanche l-lowatt and W.B.F. Corkum.
Nomination Committee - Gladys MaoMillan, Ray Higgins. Lmlie Underhay and Rev. Mr. MacLeod.
Rev. John MacKay spoke brief- ly on the Maritime Conference
and urged young people to have at
representative from their respect. ivc groups present at the confer- ence. Mention was also made of a week-and camp providing suitable date could be arranged.
Discussion groups were led by Rev. Howard Christie, Rev. W.B.- F. Corlcuan and Rev. D.W. Mac- Pherson.
The lrolrp then adiourned to Pownal Hall where box lunches were shared and tea was served
by the members of Pownal Y.P.U.
Miss Betty King very capabiy conducted the recreation period. The Young People groa-tly appre- ciated the musical composition and recitations of Mr. Wright, organist of Trinity Church.
The findings of the afternoon discussion were brought in by the secretaries of each group: Mrs. Ralph Raynor, Miss Betty King, Rev. Mr. MacLeod. A very inter- esting and helpllul discussion fol- lowed.
The evening session opened with an impressive worship service led by the Covehead Y. P.U. with Orr McCann presiding. Others taking part were, Mrs. Chesley Hughes. Mrs. Lorne MacMillan and Row- land Beairsto. Mrs. A.S. Weir was accompanist throughout the ses- sion.
The vice-president commended favourably on both the afternoon and evening worship services..She also extended further words of welcome topthosc present at the evening session.

The Eliifel Tower, at one time the highest structure in theworld, is a great tourist attraction. The chief framework and sole support of the tower are four massive steel girders gradually tapering inward to a height of nine hund- red feet. This framework sup- ports threc stages or floors, on the lower two of which are spacious restaurants. Each floor is served by an elevator. or steps if one prefers to walk, and surprisingly enough, some do. Smaller steel cross arms. connecting and sup; porting the whole, crlsa-oroll give the appearance of fine mesh or lace when viewed from a dist- ance. Below the first floor are four massive arches extending the full width of the tower through which streams of traffic pass continually.
Inseparablc from the Parisian landscape is the harmonlousdoine ot the Invalldes. three hundred and fifteen feet high. which shel- ters Napoleon's tomb. Directly under the golden dome, and sur- rounded with twelve statues of white marbles and fifty-four flags taken at the Battle of Auaterlitz, is the tomb of rose coloured mar- ble. plain but so impressive.
The Arch of Triumph. built 1" Napoleon's honour, is the largest monument of its kind. being one hundred and forty feet high and one hundred and twenty-five feet wide. with remarkable bas-relief work on either side. Beneath the Arch lies the tomb of the Un- known Soldier, with the flame above that is never extinguished. The Arch is often referred to as the "Etollc" (star) because of the twelve avenues radiating from it With no traffic direction of any kind at this section. it is easily understood why it is almost im- possible to get across to the Arch. er blooms than the lily of the valley. It expresses the virtues of purity and humility. There is something calming in its white- ness, and something holy in its perfume. It seeks quiet, self- shaded places, as if evading the ruder contacts of the world. Lit- tle May bells is one of its Ger- man names, and in England the old names of May flowers and May lilies are still applied. but these are trite and "ladders to heaven" itself as a better.
To the French, a tender mean- ing tells itself in "the tears of Holy Mary" Ostara, Norse ” of the spring, was a patron of the flower that marked her coming. Lilies of the valley are appropri- ate gifts to be offered by young swains when they visit their ladies; and, indeed. the homage and implication of purity and sweetness is poetry in itself. In it any wonde . that the perfume distilled from these holy flowers should have been held so precious in other times that only gold and silver vessels were fit to receive
