Trout are beginning to show more activity then at any time since catches are becoming more reg- ular and common and should cou- tlnue to hold this trend until late June. Trouting pressure is heavy and certain fishing spots take on the resemblance of a Sunday School picnic. At Vernon Causeway scores of anglers may be seen lined up so close packed there is scarcely room for casting. 11 one steps back to change lures or re- move a trout he has landed he loses his place.... all same ticket line-up. The North River Cause- way is also patronized by dozens of hopeful anglers. Sometimes a halt hundred are in action.

Many are asking the question why the two Causeways at North River and Vernon have suddenly become so trout productive. One fisherman, in all seriousness. told me that the trout had become trapped above the Causeways and couldn't find their way back through the tlume. A water current acts -like a magnet to trout and they'll work their way up or down stream it an opening can be found large enough for them to get through. In this columnist's opin- ion the trout are there and also stay there because the sheltered backwater behind the Causeways is teeming with shrimp a natural food of trout. The other evening an angler land a one and a half pound trout a. North River and when it flopped on the gravel shnro three shrimp bounced out of its mouth.

TROUT ACTIVE

Belle River and East Lake have furnished fishermen with excellent sport and good catches this past few weeks although it required patience at both places to fill out the limit of 20. Last Sunday from daybreak till 3.30 or 4.00 pm. trout were very active. In some places they surface ted around boats till the water resembled a huge boiling spring. Nevertheless they were choosey about what tlicy took and unless one had the right offering in his fly book or bait box it was wasted effort. After the wind shifted nor'east and treshened to a fairish blow. accompanied by rain. the trout quit moving.

A city angler who fished at East Lake on Sunday told me he had trout rolling around him for hours and the best he could do was to hour and land a one pouncier. An- other angler casting nearby filled his limit with lovely pan fish. and better. during the same time. He was using a small dun coloured fly with a spot of yellow on the wing. They wouldn't take it like clock work. or anything near it. bllt with persisic,ni casting it pro- duced results. My friend searched through his fly book. he had about 00 to choose from. and couldn't find anything like the fly the trout were taking. It was not until he got home that he spotted the fly he was looking for stuck in an out of the way corner.
