A's we crossed the famed Areti¢e Circlé, we saw, far away to the westward, the four iso- lated peaks of the Islands of Threnan; which stands up erect as towers in’ the oveati;'as if placed there as sentinels, to keep. \wateh ‘and wand over the entrance to the Polat: Seas. Nearer, to our ship’s course, we passed thé cu- rious Isle of Eestamando, or Hergeman’s Is- land, so called by the sailors of . those.seas from the likeness it is supposed to bear to a buge cavalry soldier riding through the waves. ‘The fishermen always take oif,,their eaps, and make an obeisance to the ‘‘horseman’’, as their boats float past him. I. and I remained on deck to watch for the *‘midnight sun,” the mountains to the northward of the Polar Circle being nearly ‘all snow-capped, with many a large glacier topping the highest hills, or appearing between the ridges.
The lights at 11.45 p. m., when the sun’ap- peared as if about to set, although of course jt did not do so, were splendid, and the white- capped mountains were covered with a panoply of every, nue of the rainbow, while the sea around was one golden purple blaze, of tiny wavelets. The sun appeared, as, nearly as we could .jadge,te remain quite stationary from a quarter to twelve o'clock till about half-past twelve, a, m., when the orb began to rise again slowly; jand by one o'clock the heavy mists, which had béen resting for the last two hours on the summits of some of the highest mountains, gradually-merged ‘into the skies, and as we went.down to our berths all t natuirerwas fully'as bright’as midday.
