This album is yet an- other soundtrack filled to the last track with catchy pop- rock and electronic music that hasrelatively little, ifanything, to do with the plot of the asso- ciated movie.

Despite this flaw, this album isactually adecentcom-

pilation of remixes, album tracks, and specially-commis- sioned songs. The album be- gins with an interesting remix of the Crystal Method’s song “Now isthe Time”, while Girls Against Boys, Gomez, and Art Alexakis of Everclear contrib- ute some notable rock tracks.

The remainder of the album is composed of songs contrib- uted by such electronica aritsts as Moby, Prodigy, and Spiritualized which have their charms. Morcheeba’s mix of their song “Tape Loop” is dis- appointingly bland, though, and much-hyped British group

Embrace’s song “Free Side” seemed to drag on.

The Permanent Midnight soundtrack is a likeable, but inessential, album. Buy it if you want to learn what Hollywood thinks is cutting-edge pop music.

In the past couple of years, the state of hip-hop has deterio- rated alarmingly even as sales for rap music shot up. Puff Daddy and “The Family” have managed to do the previously unthinkable and have made the most popular forms of hip-hop just another type of disposable pop music. Snoop Dogg Dogg’s music has deteriorated alarm-

ingly since he was taken under the wings of Master P, and other assorted top-sellers sell music thanks to their sex ap- peal. If it wasn’t for Fugee bandmember Lauryn Hill’s ex- cellent debut album, I might have given up entirely on hip- hop.

Lauryn Hill’snewalbum man-

ages to be consistently excel- lent, both lyrically and musi- cally. The beautiful song “To Zion” dedicated to her son and the catchy first single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” are prob- ably my favorite tracks, but the rest of the album is fine. Lauryn’s Hill political con- sciousness is evidenced in

“Lost Ones”, while “Every Ghetto, Every City” isa paean to the Harlem of her her child- hood.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is an excellent album that belongs on the CD racks of anyone at all inter- ested in the state of pop music, especially hip-hop.
