MEETING FOR EXfENSION OF LAIL-

WAY. A large number of the Electors of the Eastern part of King’s County, met in St.

Columbia ifall on ‘Tuesday the 9:h inst, for the purpose of advocating for an exten- sion of Railway from Souris to Ka-t Peint. The Dominion representatives for the “o in ty, Messrs. A. C. Macdonald and John McLean were present, as was also Dr. McIntyre, ex-M. P. The meeting was call- ed to order by appointing Mr. Stephea Campbell Chairman, and the undersigned Secretary.

Mr. A. C. McDonald was the address the meeting and spoke of t necessity of agitation in this matter. considered a branch of railroad was as much needed here as in any part of this country, and thought that the general aspect of this part of the Island would compare favorably with any other part of the country he had seen.

Mr. John McLean thought the present a very opportune time for pressing our claims on the Government by reason of Senator Ferguson holding a seat in the Cabinet, and taking into coasideration the energy displayed by the Senator in ad- vocating extension of railway in other parts of the Island, it was reasonable to conelnde that all claims fer extension of railway in this Island would meet with the serious consideration of the Govern- newt. In conclusion Mr. McLean pro- mised that in conjunction with Mr. Me- Donald he would do all in his power to further .the good cause.

Dr. Melutyre was of this branch and quoted from Hansard ai speech which he made subsequent to the survey that was made o the branch in question. He thought that as the Government were lavishing subsi- dies in almost every other part of the Ds- minion we, although avery insiguiticant part, have yetaright toat least a smal! portion of the public money. He spoke of the disadvantages under which we labored in being very far from market, and con- cluded by promising that in the event of his being elccied to the next parliament, he would do all that could be done in the m itter,

The fellowing gentlemen then made sh ort epeeches in reference to the subject, viz: Messrs Alfred Rose, Elisha Baker, Lauchiin McDonald, ex-M P P, Alex Fraser, Step':en McEachern, R F MeDon- ald and MJ Campbell. The price of crude petroleam has gone up to $2 a barrel and started an old time boom in well drilling. It would seem a good time for the exploiters of the Gaspe petroleum fields to show that there is something more substantial than gas about the holes they have dug in the ground,

Advices received from Little Rock during sthe past week, are to the effect that 8® legisiature of Arxansas has ap propriated $10,000 for an exhibit at tie Cotton States and Iaternational Expo- sition. The exhibit is already prepared,1 and is a very handsore and complete dis- play of the wealth and resources of Arkansas, This adds another to the list of States to be officially represented at this Exposition.

The mutilated body of Miss Minnie Williams was on Friday found in the library of the Emanuel Baptiet Church, San Francisco, and on Saturday the nude boly of Miss Blanche Lamont was found in the tower of the same edifice. The victims were about twenty-one years of age and are described as being pretty, modest brunettes. W. H. T.. Durant, a young medical student and a prominent member of the church in which the dread- ful deeds were committed, is under arrest suspected of both crimes.

Col. Kelly, the leader of the second ex- pedition against Chitral, has had no fight- ing to do, but he is getting lots of march- ing. It now appears that on his first attempt to cross the snow bound moun- tains he was driven back into camp by storms, and it was only after repeated efforts that the difficulties were overcome. When he got down again from the hills, ani within sixty miles of Chitral, it might be thought his troubles would be over, but the spring rains had swollen the

mountain streams, carrying away the bridges and washing out the roads.

After all, nature offers more serious ob stacles to overcome than all the cunning and valour of the wild Pathan.

A New York despatch received at Win- nipeg says that Harper Bros.’ company of New York are getting anxious about their correspondent, Caspar Whitney, who left to penetrate the Arctic Circle. Harry Munn, of Winnipeg, who has just returned from a trip to the far north, reported hav- ing met Mr. Whitney during February at Fort Resolution. After resting a few days Mr. Munn, in company with Mr. Whit- ney, started in pursuit of wood buffalo, but they were unsuccessful, ow- ing to a mild spell in the winter, a thing unprecedented in the northern country. They then returned to the fort, from where Mr. Whitney started north again about February 20th for the spring hunt of musk oxen. As the caribou are very plentiful on the islands in the lakes Mr. Whitney was expected to make the trip withont much hardship. As the winter was so unusually mild there chould not be much anxiety for Mr. Whitney’s de- lay, unless he has met with an accident.

ANOTHER LETTER FROM ME, WEST.

Sin,—I am pleased to see in today’s Guardian pointed ont what the Patrons are likely to do in Ontario Government, and I have no doubt they will aim at re- ducing the tariff. But I think we want them here to regulate our local affairs, since we have such a heavy indirect tax on, say only one thing, and that is Prob- lems in Arithmetic, by D. J. McLeod, Chief Superintendent of Education. The tariff put on at Ottawa, we are not compelled to pay, as we are on this arithmetic, being in 2 line with the examination papers cf the Prince of Wales College entrance examin- ation. I would say the way the book sella it would be worth about 5c., and the tax- payer has to pay 20. This is just 300 per cent. I don’t know anything that Ottawa has put such a high tariffon as that, and [ think, it is only fair if our Surer- intendent should say to the people that give him $100 per month if he can work all those sums himself, and get the ar.swers that is in the book.
