He read the correspondence between the Canadian Government and the United States Secretary of State on the subject, clearly showing that Canada was ready at any time to enter upon a fair reciprocal trade; and further, as an evidence of their good will towards the Americans,and our desire for reciprocity,they allowed them the free use of our fishing grounds in 1885, upon the distinct understanding that the President of the United States - would recommend that a commission be appointed to deal with the subject. The President did make the recommendation, but Congress would not entertain it. The correspondence was read and_ satisfied ~ the people that the absence of reciprocity was entirely due to the hostility of a sec- tion of the inhabitants of the United States. He thea contrasted the expenditure in this Province for public works made by the Mackenzie Government in their tive years of oftice with that of the Sir John Govern- ment. He asked the electors to study the matter for themselves, not to be led away by statements that would not bear the strictest investigation, and if they con- cluded, as he knew they would, that the Government led by Sir John was the best for Canada generally and this Province in particular, to record their votes squarely for Messrs. Lefurgey and Hackett.
