Come see the show at the Guild

Very often, people listen to the wonderful sounds of music without thinking about how much work has been put into it. From February 7 through March 4 at the Gallery at the P.E.I. Arts Guild, music lovers will have the oppor- tunity to view one ofthe initial steps of making music; the making ofthe instrument. This will take place during the Instrument Makers Show, which promises to be one of the most exciting events to be held in the Arts Guild to this date. Moreover, it is the first show of its kind to be held on Prince Edward Island.

During this month long show, there will be a number of Island Instrument Makers in residence. Each of these unique Island Artists will have a demonstration of their product on display.

As a special feature, some of these instrument makers will be in the gallery during the month to give presentations on their works. Aside from this, they will also be play- ing their instruments,

To take this one step further, special guest, Kai Arvi, will be in house from Tues- day, February 4 to Saturday, February | 1 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p,m. He is world renowned for the construction of the Arvi Basses , which are in the hands of the principal Bass players ofthe Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Sym- phony Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Or- chestra, among others.

Hendrik Bauman is another instrument maker who will be in residence during the month. Bauman is also world renowned for the construction of the harpsichord and his career as a performer and conductor of historic mu- sic. As well, he is known for his fine work in the restoration of the 1834 Broadwood piano. He will be in residence on February 11 from

1:30 - 5:00 and February 12 from 3:00 - 5:00. During this time, he will be conducting a talk and demonstration entitled, ‘“Two Case Sto- ries’’, in which he will discuss the making of the harpsichord. and the restoration of the

There will also be special presentations ongoing during your lunch hour. On February 28 from 11:00 - 12:00, Makiko Yamaguchi will be performing a mini recital on the Japa- nese Koto. This fascinating 13 string instru- ment will be on display in the Gallery for the

month.Also, Nancy Clement will be in the gallery on March 1 and 2 from 11:00 - 12:00. Clement is becoming known for constructing the Celtic Lap Harp. She will be talking on this, as well as performing a mini concert. As well, Redstone will be making an appearance at the show. This is a relatively new group comprised of Steve Sharratt, Sigrid Rolfe, and Margie Carmichael. This group plays Folk/Celtic type music and they are totally acoustic. They have demos ready to

Also, with pleasure, show organizers are pleased to say that there are several instru- ment makers from the Island who are going to have their work on display for the month. These talented individuals include: Don McCannell - violin, Neil McCannell - violas and violins, Keith Boere - guitar, David Thomson - mandolin and guitar, Donald Hoeg - fine dulcimers, Kate Poole - dulcimer, Vian Emery - fine bodhrons.

To kick the event off with a bang, a jam session with the instrument makers and other invited guests is scheduled for February 7 at 7:30. Invited Island musicians include Roy Johnston, David Thomson and Friends, Mike Paget, Urban Carmicheal, George Brothers, Sandy MacKinnon, Denise Reiser, and Margie Carmicheal.During this time, the public is asked to come to join in the session, to meet these popular artists and to support your local Arts Guild.

This is truly an event that you will not want to miss. After all, ‘‘Where would we be without the musicians? Where would the musicians be without the instrument mak- ers?’? Come and see the show.

What can I say stout the plot? Ir simple and straightforward. Groo meets band of refugees being pursued by soldiers. H intervenes and slays the soldiers, and decide to help the fugitives find a new homeland After encountering an old ‘friend’, captai Ahax, Groo and the refugees sail far and wid looking foraland. I’d-betternot tell you if the find a land, that would ruin the story.

This book isn’t very deep or well-de veloped, but that’s the beauty of it-- it’s no supposed to be. It’s good old fashioned Even so, the story has a moral and ends on serious note: "Mankind is the story of the sam| mistakes in different places." -- Marko Peric

Sons of Maxwel return...

By Yvonne MacKean Great news for Irish and folk music lovers The group Sons of Maxwell, from Timmon Ontario, are making an appearance on ca pus.

The brothers, Don and Dave Carol, 2 making their second visit to the Island sin¢ the fall. They were at the Old Dublin Pub i November. Coincidentally, the brothers 3 friends of Residence Life Coordinator Ralp Robinson. Due to personal promotion } Robinson and their talent, the group was we received, especially by residence students.

The group planned to return to t Island in the new year. So, Robinson arrang¢ for them to play at the Dining Hall. It is convenient location, especially since it is 4 event oriented towards resident studen!§ However, the pub is wet/dry and is open to? students.

The date for the event is Thursd2! February 9, at the Wanda Wyatt Dining h# Tickets aré available at the Residence officé Student Services. In advance, tickets aré § for residence students and $4 for other dents. The door price is $5 foreveryone. Hof to see you there, it should be a blast.
