"our Common- wealth - the British Ccmmon- wealth" is "stronger, not weaker, as it fulfills its ancient mission of widening the bounds of freedom wherever our people 1ive." Developments in the Common- wealth have left him with a ful- ler understanding of the work ex- pected of hlm, he said.

The King called an ailment which has affected his legs and confined him to Buckingham Pal- ace "an unkind stroke of fate." But. even this adversity, he said. has its brighter side: an outpour- ing of affection and good wishes from all over the world.

Because of his illness, ihe King was unable to make the tradition- al Christmas holiday trip to the royal country estate at Sandring- ham. in Norfolk. This was the first time he had made his Chtist- mas broadcast front Buckingham Palace since the coronation in 1937.
