Tue Progress understands that His -Excel- lency the Governor General has “given two medals, to be competed for by the pupils at- tendingfthe Summerside Schools,at the annual examination in June next.

It is reported that hog cholera has broken out near J achine, Quebec, and that 20 pigs died on one farm within a few days. The Governmeut veterinary is at present engaged in making 4n inquiry into the matter.

SicKNEss appears to prevail to a great ex- tent in Montreal. For the week ending on the 17th inst., 66 deaths occurred in that city. Three of these were from diphtheria, five from small pox, and one from typhoid fever. There are 130 patients in the general hospital.

Tue N. P. anp THE Poor.—A Montreal despatch says :—The number of poor people applying for relief in this city is a great deal less than at the corresponding period last year. The cause is attributed to the increased em- ployment at the mannfactories.

The schooner Cassie Mac cleared from Souris on the 17th inst. from St. Johns, N’fid, with 125 quarters beef, 13 carcasses pork, 7 do mutton, 221 geese, 40 bushels barley, 4,235 de oats, 1,467 do potatoes, shipped by McDonald, McDonald & Co. ; and on the 13th the brigt. ‘‘G. A. Wakeford” cleared for Bayonne, France, with 17,600 bushels of oats and 200 pieces deal, shipped by L. C. Owen.

Tue business of the Intercolonial Express will be continued during the winter months by str. ‘Northern Light.” The first shipment arrived here on Saturday night last. The

Ropprry.—On Friday evening last a pair of pants were stolen from the Glasgow House by three young thiefs who are as yet unknown. The pants were hanging on a rack in front of the store, and about half-past five o'clock four boys passed the street. Two of these lifted a third one upto the rack, and he seized the
