Follmving a practice in the par- mnge on Thursday evening, the men sang on Sunday three gospel hymns, very effectively, “Only , Him,” “Saved By Grace", ma “Take the Name of Jesus With You.” Ilett Richards sang two verses of "Saved By Grace," is a solo. OTTAWIA (CP)-—Ol-iver Vardy makes no bones about it. New- foundland doesn't spend any money advertising for tourists.
But it does try to get some pub- lilcitly, and last year it spent $5,- 000 telling tourists that the island is almost ready for visitors, the director of Newfiounland’s tourist development office said.
Right now, Mr. Vardy told the federaliprovincial tourist confer- ence, the province is not in posi- tion to extend an “open invita- tion” to tourists.
He spoke after delegates from nine provinces outlined advertis- ing expenditures totalling nearly $11,000,000. »
Newfoundland was ready to guest tourists willing to accept shortcomings in accommodation and transportation.

seems to have set Canada’s im- ports on the comeback trail but the trend may not last long, of- filci'alrs said Wednesday.
After lagging all year, imports suddenly rose in October to 34:99.- 200,000, the biggest buying spurt in 17 months, and about $20,000,- 000 higher than last year’s 0c- tober figures, the bureau of sta- tistics reported in a preliminary estimate.
No analysis was yet available on the rise, but officials, leafing through invoices, estimated that the wad of bills on steel was about four times the normal amount and that many of the steel items imported were of the kind normally made in Canada.
They concluded that the big up- surge came from steel buyers who couldn’t get their normal quotas because of the Steel Com- pany of Canada strike at Hamil- ton, now resolved. A more de- tailed analysis is to be prepared and published later.

Devotion To Dog Rewarded
MONTREAL (CP) ~— Twelve- year-old Linda Arkison's devotion to her dog Trixie during a disastrous fire last month has been rewarded by a group of Montreal women.
Mrs. W. A. Steel, educational secretary of the Lady Scott chapter Imperial Order Daught- ers of the Empire, presented Linda with a silver bracelet Tuesday and commended her “bravery beyond her years" dur- ing the Oldfield apartment house fire that took 15 lives.
Linda, whose defective heart kept her out of school all her life until twa years ago, had a constant companion, her black- and-white mongrel Trixie.
