The Post Office and the Fourth Commandment.
akaade | Sir,—Your correspondent, ‘‘Blrecoat,” ‘ought to know that it shews weakness to objurgate an opponent and call him bad names merely to emphasize an opinion. | The opinion in this case is (or appears to |be) the notion that to unlock the Post Office on Sunday is a violation of the ‘Christian Sabbath. If this is as self- ,evident as ‘‘Biuecoat” assumes, how does | he account for the differences of opinion on \this very subject both now and in ye olde ‘tyme before us ?

Seo it will be quite in order to refer to some well-established facts, bearing in mind that the Jews alway ; were, and stillare, a unit of belief in the obligations of the seventh day (Saturday) as the Sabbath, as recited in the fourth Commandment ; and, secondly, that Chris- tendom never was, and still is not of one opinion in regard to the sacredness of Sun- aay. the first day of the week, their Sab- bath.
Notwithsianding the learning that for over fifteen hundred years has run over this river bed, the conclusion is a long way yet from the rock on which Truth reposes. ‘‘Bluecoat’s” little freshet is nowhere. Sunday, the Christian’ Sabbath is com- ;monly called Dies Dominica, or the Lord’s day ; but why it was necessary to profane the day set apart, in perpetuity, by the All- Father, as an honor to the Son, has not been made clear, nor has it been shewn that two days out of the seven were one too many to give to God the Father and Crea- tor, and God the Son and Redeemer, in return for their love, though it has been hinted that the fourth Commandmant would be doubly broken if the required six days of labor wers curtailed of the profits of one of them.
The first civil law (quo.ing authentic
history) that was issued for the observation of the Lord’s Day, combined with the 7th the Jewish Sabbath; the earliest record: being that by Constantine ithe Great, and dated March 7, anno 321. By the 4th canon of Edgar, anno 960,the Sabbath day was ordained to be kept holy in England from Saturdey at 3p. m. te Monday at daybreak.
On May 24, 1618, there was published by King James I, a work under the title of “The King’s Majesties Declaration to his subjects concerning Lawful Sports to be used on Sundays after evening prayers,” which it may be inferred had the sanction of the learned translatiors of our present authorized version, issued only seven years before.
When Lord Robert Grosvenor (April, July, 1825) introduced his bill in Parlia- ment to suppress Sunday trading, it met with such determined opposition, that it had to be withdrawn.
In January, 1867, Sunday lectures were given in St. Martin’s Hall, London, for diffusing a knowledge of natural religion by the aid of science, with sacred rausic at intervals, by Professor Huxley, Dr. W. B. Carpenter and others, and ot the 19th of November, 1868, the innovation was de- cided in the law courts, not to be any in fraction of the Sunday Act.
In 1878 the Grosvenor Gallery, London, and other collections of scientific interest were thrown open to the public in summer on Sundays, and free libraries were opened in Manchester and other places in England. So it seems this vexed question has been surging its angry waves over all Christen- dom from its earliest conception to the pre- sent time, and maintaining a sort of hand- to-hand fight between iifferent schools of thought, without any permanent and satis- fying result. It is even here in Charlotte- town, but ludicrously frivolous in character, if the ‘‘ Bluecoat ” argument is to be taken in proof, for, according to that view, you may write a letter, and putit in tie post on Sunday, but if you take one owt and read it you break the fourth commandment, and violate the sacred eharacter of the “<r

The Word Religion.
Sir,—On the 28th of April last, I replied to a question put by a correspondent regarding the definition of the word Religion. In your issue of the 6th inst., a writer signing himself ‘‘ Research’ takes exception to my explanation.
Passing over his affected disregard for the opinion I expressed, I have no doubt his vanity will receive a rude shock when ! tell him that when he poses as a philological critic, at least when he discourses Latin, he attempts the solution of difficulties for which his mente] training does net qualify him, his extensive research, hitherto, to the contrary notwithstanding.
After five weeks and more of patien’, research (1 like that word !) he has given ‘o your readers in Saturday’s issue the reealt of his labors. Unfortunately 1 did not happen to see it till last evening, and now, with your permission, I shall examine his carefully matured views.
He derives the word religion from legis & company or congregation, which by the prefix re becomes re-ligio, a resssembling—- Cicero and Lactantius to the contrary not- withstanding. .
He assigns no reason for the change of the letter e in the simple word to é in ihe compound one, except that euphony demands it. Euphonically speaking, hov- ever, the one would sound as well as the other in Latin. The real cause of the present form of the word is to be found ia the fact that its etymon is, as I stated in my last, either relego or religo. Why, even ‘‘Research” has been playing into my hands—unwittingly, I admit—when he strives to derive it from legio, a company. This very word is in its turn derived from its etymon, Jegv, and this leads us to the starting point in my last letter. This once

established, my line of argument was simply ‘nassailable. Once I got as far back as lego, the rest had to follow. When ‘*Research” stopped at legio it was simply at a way station. Further back was the cerminus. the shallowness of his studies when he tells us that originally the word Religion ‘only con- , veyed the ideaof reassembling, without refer- ence to the cause of meeting or the subject to be discussed. He will pardon me for telling him that by no amount of con- tortion can he twist that meaning out of the word religion, deriving it as he does from legio. His word (legio) was strictly a military term, and was chiefly employed to \designate a Roman legien, a division of ,the army, although sometimes it was also ‘applied to the troops of other nations. It had also a figurative sense and meant aid, ‘such as that rendered by friendly arms. Nowhere, in the whole range of Latin liter- ature, does legio signify a company or con- gregation in the civil sense ascribed to it by ‘*Research.”
There are two forms of etymology, one dealing with the changes of form that words undergo in one and the same language, the other dealing with the changes that words undergo in passing from one language to another. Whilst good usage restricts in Latin the word legio to the Roman legion, when the word is transferred to the English language, it acquires, under the laws of etymology, a wider range of appli- cation. Besides legion, in English, it means also a multitude. Yet, in its Latin form, it retains all its primitive rigidity. And necessarily so, for the Latin, being a dead language, is no longer susceptible of change.
Now, to show how improbable, I should rather say, ridiculous, is the theory advanc- ed by your correspondent, let me ask if any of the students in any of our seats of learn- ing would venture to translate into Latin the phrase ‘‘in this assemblage, reassemb!- ed, ete.,” by In hae religione. Would any of them translate that. expression, so familiar to us on account of its Scottish associations, ‘*The Gathering of the Clans ;” Religic Tribuum? I think not; and yet if Religio meant at any time simply a re- assembling, as ‘‘Research” contends, tle translation would be unassailable, whilst as it stands there, it is simply ridiculcus. Any person who affects to ignore the authority of Cicero in matters pertaining to the Latin language, knows nothing what- soever of Latin. A foreigner may learn a few common-place forms of expression in our language, but If Shakespeare and other standard authors are sealed books to him, we dispose of him summarily by requesting him to extend still further the range of his ‘researches ” before engaging in a contro- verry with him on such matters,
Not to weary your readers too much I shall conclude with one more remark. It seems proper that there shorld be a word in the Latin as well as the English—in fact, in every language—to convey the idea of man’s bounden obligations to his Creator.
The word Religion, as I explained it in my last, does this. My explanation is the one handed down from entiquity, with the agan Cicero endorsing it; it is the one sanctioned by the usage of the Eastern and Western Church, and presumably accepted by all mankind, if we except a handful of self-constituted scientists of the Bob Inger- soll stripe, who ignore the existence of any relations between man and the Supreme Being, because, forsooth, they are more pagan than Cicero and more learned than the Church, This is my

County Lines Notes.
The sturdy yeomanry of this section of the County are now through with their work, and trusting to a kind providence, look for- ward to good crops in time of harvest.
The new Railway Engine shed at this place just completed is a marked improve- ment to the village. The new and beautiful garden of our genial Station Agent has also a very attractive appearance. The grounds were laid off by M. FP. Moar, Char- lottetown.
The last Scott Act prosecutions in this village has had a very deterring effect on the liquor business, although the Act is still frequently evaded. On Thursday last a young men from Hunter River way came here by train, and after loafing around for a time he found out a doctor and procured a certificate on the Vendor. When the time came to return home the young man was in stich a beastly state of intoxication that the train hands refused to let him bosrd the train. Weare now asking, who is responsible for this evasion of the law, the Doctor or the Vendor! It must be one or perhaps both. Will the Inspectors please take a note }

A despatch from Cairo says: ‘‘Some ex- citement was created here emorg the English officials and residents by the ar- rival of a Coptic merchant from Khartoum. He states that he witnessed the capture of Khartoum, and that immediately after the massacre of the garrison, the Mahdi de- manded the head of Gen. Gordon fora trophy, but his warriors produced the head of the Austrian consul, Mr. Hansal. When the mistake was dircovered a second search was made for Gordon, but the Mahdi’s fol- lowers were unable to find any trace of the hero of Khartoum. They found several other Europeans, but no documents were found on their possession to show that either of them was Gordon. The Capt. says that it is possible that Gordon seeing that all was lost may have escaped South.
