text and provide the slides for a film strip on the Piping Plover for distribution to Island Schools. She began teaching at the Montague School in 1979 and her Piping Plover slide strip was circulated to Island schools this same year. She brought conservation into her own classroom through the use of "natural examples" in her teaching and then she expanded this effort by initiating a "Birds and Wildlife" course at the Montague Community School in 1984. Concurrently with these undertakings, she served as the Natural History Society's Newsletter Editor from 1979 to 1984 and was coordinator of the Society's Christmas Bird Counts from 1977 to 1983.

In the early 19805 when pressure on P.E.I. National Park management staff threatened to bring down the Piping Plover fence, it was Winnie who called and hosted the meeting of the Society that dealt with the crisis. This meeting resulted in the joint action of the Canadian Nature Federation and the Natural History Society and, shortly thereafter, the Piping Plover was featured on the National News. This news article brought the species to national attention and other television shows soon took an interest in the species.

During the autumn of 1983, Winnie participated in a seminar on the Piping Plover at the Atlantic Region meeting of the Canadian Nature Federation at U.P.E.I. This seminar brought together many of the specialists working with the Piping Plover in the Maritimes to discuss the status of the Maritime population, the types and success rates of protective efforts being made, and potential new methods to assist the species through their crisis.

When Winnie married David Wake in 1984 and moved to Ontario, her work with the species took another turn. Winifred supported the CNF efforts to mobilize the Canadian Wildlife Service to implement a concerted public education program and to implement a Piping Plover National Recovery Plan. She carried through with this effort by utilizing her expertise with the species to provide comments on both the United States and Canadian Recovery Plan efforts in 1987 and 1988. In 1987, she started work on a new Piping Plover public education program by writing a script and providing most of the slides for the video production "The Piping Plover, A Question of Survival"*. Winnie also served as an expert witness on the Piping Plover for the Island Nature Trust's defense of the Greenwich Sand Dune System. Her dedication to this species continues with presentations and writings on the Piping Plover.

NATIONAL FORESTRY WEEK by Ruth Richman

National Forestry Week this year is May 6th to 12th. The provincial Forestry Branch is planning many forestry related activities for the week including presentations to schools, tours of the J. Frank Gaudet Tree Nursery, and guided tours in the Demonstration Woodlots. The highlight of the week will be the Open House, Wednesday, May 9, at the provincial tree nursery, Upton Road in West Royalty. More details will be available soon in the local papers.
