So, once again, welcome back to another (or perhaps first) year at the U of PEI. A particular welcome back to the worst-maintained, yet most- spirited building on campus. Yes, Marion Hall, who we had all thought had seen its last days as a residence, has proved us all wrong, and, back from the dead, will carry on the tradition of holding some of the loudest and most random parties this side of Tignish.

And so, as the year goes on remember to work hard and to have fun; to embrace the good times, learn from the bad, and whenever possible, to raise a glass in celebration of another semester in the company of friends. And try not to procrastinate too much. (Editor’s note: Ryan’s article was

Moncton changes the number of kilometers in order to suit its argument, in hopes of offsetting its label as the armpit of the Maritimes. Sure, it would be nice for Island fans to have a team in Moncton, just a short one hour drive away, but I wouldn’t count on it. There is no guarantee that there will be a team in the Maritimes at all and if we do get one, it will be in Halifax. That’s all.

“We’ve been touring a lot,” said Mays. “We’ve been touring for about three years pretty straight. So we’ve got it down to a fine art now. We’re locked into a real groove now, there’s no messing around.”

He says they are in the process of getting some record deals in the states and overseas and once that happens they’! start touring there. In the meantime, he’ Il keep writing songs and they’re set to start a cross-country Canadian tour in the next few weeks.

Despite having toured across europe and most of Canada, Mays and his bandmates say the maritimes is the best place to party. .

“PEI’s pretty good,” said Mays. “We always come to rocking parties in PEI and there’s always jams which are always fun. St. Johns (Nfld.), George street, is pretty nuts.”

Matt Mays + El Torpedo played to a packed house at the Courtyard Cafe later that night, where full lines and sold out tickets showed just how rocking a good maritime band can be.

He did admit being a dynamic individual is not for the faint of heart — but it beats the alternative.

“Trying to go offon your own tangent is kinda hard when you’re new, and also trying to fit into whatever everyone else is doing doesn’t make you feel that original, so I would say the best advice is just to study whatever your craft is and go for it...and do your own version of it

“Quincy Jones once said, pick someone and copy them exactly because you will never be like them. I find that a very interesting idea and I think people should take that to note: whether it’s Einstein, or Stevie Wonder.

He said this is a method that has done him well. Even though his first musical influences had a hip-hop flava, he feels he has drawn froma number of musical influences; and made the music his own. The last thing he wants to do his pigeon-hole himself or his music.

Whatever his sound, he tries to maintain a vibe of simplicity...and yes...love. :

“People tend to like (music) when they feel there is an effortless idea to it, or they feel they’re not trying so hard to do it.”

“I don’t want to sound too hippy, but it really is all about bringing the vibe and loving the people, and the audience is feeling that ... and it’s the best experience you can have sometime. All the time.”
