Is England Sober.

Nothing is so deceiviog as figures. A full attendance of scholars during five days of the week, aud a poor attendance on the sixth give a reader of the week's average but a false idea of the geveral atteadance. A small village containing about « huodred families may be rated as being worth $10,000.000. That seems rich enough, but when the particulars are gleaued, if we fiud that a millionaire had over $9,000 000 te himself, aud that the majority of the inhabi‘ants were miserably poor, then again figures have become deceiving. No oue will doub: for a moment that Eugiand is oue of the most drunken nations on the fac? of the

globe. Ramble through the street> dariog the eveniog aud you will be uncomfortably reminded of the fact.

But here we come to statistics which are likely to prove that England is a sober nation; is a moderate drivker; aud has been greatly belied. All this is strauge. because everyone knows that she is—

what the Yankee would calli—* The boss swiller.!’) A weli-kpown tectotal authority, Dr. Pope, bas given his

opinion about moderation, aud he say that “two euuces of absolute alcohol per day might be taken by the individual without appreciable harm” Two fluid ounces mean, we suppose, about the tenth of a pint; remembering this, the daily ration, according to Dr. Parks would amount to upwards of thirty-six pints, o four gallous and a half in a twelvemont! Suppose that 16,000,000 persous driak this quantity, and the rest of Eugland’s population be children and total abstaiu- ers, it will then be found that the national consumption would be no less than 72,000 000 gallons of alcohol. But Eng- Jand, last year, dravk considerably less than 72,000,000 gallons of alcohol; does it vot then follow that the Uniied King- dom keeps within the bounds of moder ation Here are the figures of the exact cousumptivn of liquor and the alcohol it contuiued :—

Froin these figures, then, it is clear that @ grievous reproach to the Euglish na- tiou has been removed. Yet from actual experience, the Brivisber must still carry the palm as being au ivhabitaut of the most drunken nation on the face of the globe. Here then is a paradox, and the figures have cot us into a muddle.

Gold Coinage.

The estimated total stock of gold in the world in use as coin is $2 320,000,- 000. England has $630.000,000 ; France, $680 000,000 ; Germany, $400,000,000 ; and the United States, $460,000,000. Spaio is rather low in the list, haviog only $150 000.000. The estimate pro- babiy ¢pproaches correctoess, but it is very difficult to find the amount of gold in a country unless a record is kept of the amounts consumed in the arts and sciences, Gold leaf for decorating pur- poses carries off an enormous amount of the precious metal. Jewels of gold, and gold plating swallow up th» greater part of the earth's production of geld. People talk of a scarcityof gold; the figures given indicate that the world is tolerably well supplied. The scarcity comes from

There is quite a boom in iron and steel across the Atlantic. The French manu- facturers are exceedingly busy, and are extending their means of production. The State Railway has giveu orders for 198,352 tons of rails, and it is charac- teristic of the Government that the orders were distributed all over the country. All the best firms got a piece of the cake. It is worth noting that an English house submitted the lowest price for one of the lots, but the offer was not even taken into consideration. France for the French is the motto. On all sides, the trade in iron and steel is first rate, and merchants are seeking to ouy ahead, thus causing a far greater demand than the actual consumption.

The Daily News’ Berlin despatch says that the negotiations of the powers on the Eyyptian question is progressing favorably. Theo exertions of Germany to bring about a friendly understanding betweea the powers most interes‘ed in the Eastern question are weeting with considerable success.

The Temps says that England entertains a plan for the reorganization of the financial affairs of Egypt by the suppression of th. control and an extension of the powers of the public debt commission,

The military wanceuvres are at an end, aud the Parisian jonraals are eagerly chronicling the opinion of the different foreign officers who attended the operations of the various corps. The ization appears to be most defective. were sent over the same ground twice, ard the quartermastor’s department was far from being coniplete. Reserves were called ont, to find that their period of training had been further postponed and some men belonging to the Eight Battalion of Chas- seurs were given Amiens as their route instead of Epernay. On their arrival they were informed of their mistake, but, iv order to conceal the blundering of the recruiting department, the men were iv- terned for tweuty-four hours and then sent on to Epernay. An accident is reported daring the sham fight at Conches, in the Eure. Two gunners who were serving a field piece were killed, owing to their comrade having neglected to work up the breech piece. which was blown out with the heel of the cartridge.

An Ocean Stsamer in Distress.

The steamer ‘‘Mount Lebanon,” Captain Whitson, from Baltimore bound to Havre, arrived in Halifax harbor on Friday last, having spent since Sept. 20th on the Atlan- tic, during which her propellor’ was lost She had a tempestuous time in attempting to reach Halifax. Fine weather prevailed after leaving Baltimore until Monday, Sept 25th, when a dense fog set in, and the ship, steaming only, made slow progress until the morning of the following day when it commenced to clear. A few minutes after one o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, when the ‘‘Mount Lebanon” was in lat. 43 45, ion. 48 42, and the weather calm and sea smo ta, there was a sudden violeat motion of the ship. The engines were at once stopped, and it was found the propellor had been lost. A large school of whales had just been passed through, and the propellor probably striking one, hid been kaocked off. Atl sail was then made and the steam- er’s head turned towards Halifax. After suifering a tremendous strain from the effects of the violent storms, and after being refused assistanca by several steamers she was taken in tow by the Gellert” which vessel towed her a distance of 110 miles, and then signalled that she would have to proceed alone. She reached Sambro Lighthouse in safety, took on board a pilot, and was afterwards towed up Halifax harbor by the tngs “‘Bertha” and ‘*Henry Hoover.” Ths ‘“‘Mount Lebanon” is an iron steamer of 1,555 tons register. She has a carg» of 42,000 bushels of grain, 300 bales of cotton, a large quantity of tobacco and general merchandize.

Street Lighting in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

[nu opposition to our remarks on the Elec- tric Light, the following deserves atten- tion :—

A number of the residents of Fond da Lac, Wis , have concluded that the electric light is neither what has been claimed nor expected cf it, and consequentiy are much displea-ed with its workings and effect. The disappoiat- ment isthe more severe considering many of these were advocates of the tower system of lighting. Oa Division, Harney, Linden, Sec- oad aud other thoroughfares residents are now negotiating for a continuance of gas lamps at cr near their residences so that fhe petestrian may have light. Division street, ea*t of Portland, will soon be lighted by gas. paid for by private individuals, while on the corner of Second and “Harney streets the light of a particular gas lamp has never been extinguished. The Robbery Case

Few occurrences have created such a deep and strong feeling, in Charlottetown as the arrest on Saturday, of Mr. Henry Blatch, Chief Clerk of the County Court of Queen's County, for the robbery of the safe in Carvell Bros.,Counting room.

Mr. Blatch vecupies a responsible posi- ton. In connection with his: flice, he is weil and favorably known to the basiness community; and is related, more or less directly, to many highly respected families.

The preliminary examination was, this forenoon, held before His Honor the Sti- pendiary Magistrate. The Courtroom was packed with spectators. Maleolu McLaod, Q. C., appeared for the prosecution; and L. H. Davies, Q C., for the prisoner.

W H. Arrkes, (Sworn)—Am a member of the firm of Carveli Bros. The parties are J 8. Carvell and myself. Missed the money ” Friday morning the 15th of Sept. Got to s'evp about 8a m. Did not at first notice anything wrong. I opened the safe. Two drawers in safe. Found top one had been broken opem. The Safe is in second story. ITasked M~. Albe:t Carvell’s son if he had noticed anything wioag when he opened the -afe that morning. He said, when he came in that morning the front door appeared bard t» open and showed where nails had been atuck in to keep latch from raising. It is a doubledoor, only one lock Gait, with fla:

ey (keyshown.) No other fastening except thum latch. He showed me where window with iron shutter on south side of building had been opened. The sash is not generally fastened but the two iron shutters are closed every night from the inside, with a pin of iron, about oue foot long. The fastening is quite strong and can be only cpened from the inside. I immediately sont for Mr. Albert Carveil. He arr.vsa before 9 a.m. Nelson Rattenbury, Parker Carvell, ‘thomas Handra- han and myself wens into the cellar. Tue entrance to cellar 1s trom north-west coruer of lower flat. The inside hatch of the celiar is usvally kept up, especiaily in day time. It op ns aginst north wall. The outside cellar hatch is on west side of the building. There is no step-'adder from outside hatch. Th» ont- sile hatch is fastened in the usual way, with staple passing through the a ch, secured by a woolen pin. It can oaly be oped from inside. I found this hatch locked aad secured in the usual way by stick passed through staple. A box of pipes was placed beneath the hatch om the ground, standing on end Foot marks were upon it The b-x was fully twenty feet from the place reserved f. r boxes of pipes. Itis about seven feet from floor of cellartohaspon hatch. Do not myself re- quire to st-nd on anything in order to fasten hatch. A person in cellar could not shut hateh without the aid of box, b:cause he would have to reach for hatch. Hatch is usaally kept shut. I am pretty sure it was not opened on day of robbery. Ll had the cellar cleaned out a few days b:fore the robbery. The hatch was not opened since that day—except to put in coal. When weeget*two f-et inside ot steps it is pot more than three steps to reach outside hatch. There is mo other way to get into cellar from outside except the hatch men- tioned. I examined safe with Albert Carvel!. The safe is‘ double-door one, locked with « key. There are two flat keys—one kept by myzelf, the other by A Carwell. I always carry my key, or leave itin safe during part of the day. 1 usually open safe in morning. My key could not be used on the night of th- robbery, as it is always im my possession. found a piece of moulding on the floor before

broken off. Found six dollars in envelope in drawer, but no other money or checks in broken drawer. Left shop, Thursday, 14th, wt eight p. m. Left A. Carvell in charge. Do not know if any money was im safe or not. Albert Carvell lost his key in 1873; aud the drawer of the safe had then a Chubb lock put upon it. The lock has two keys. Albert Carvell took one. I don’t know who took the other. I don’t know that there was any money lost at thattime. Since the keys were lost, we lost money on one occa- sion. Previous to that time there was an attempt made to rob the office, but it was not successfal. Last winter (about January) we lust $150; but the money did not belony to us, and I do not personally know anything about it. Whilst we were down in th» cellar I remember Parker Carvell mentioning Henry Blatch’s name. I gave him a look, as I did not wish any names to Le mentioned before strangers, Afterwards I think Rattenbury connected blatch’s name with the robbery. When Blatch was with us we had nc thing against him. I gave him a recommendation (-ecommendation produced) as follows:— Cuarcotrerown, P. E. I., 19th June, 1876.

Mr. H. Blatch, who has been in our employ for some years as Clerk, has given us perfect satis acton, and we checrfally recommend him as careful, industrious and honest.

Do not know whether the $150 spoken ef was ever in the safe. Never allow my key of saf> out of my keeping. Robbery was aot publicly talked about uotil Monday afterwards.
