thought-provoking. While our Lord was in Gapharnaum, some time during the early part of His public life, a man sick of the palsy was brought to Him to be cured.

Actually He did two things for the man. He cured the sickness of his soul when He said:“--«thy sins are forgiven thee,” and the sickness of his body when he said: “Arise, take up thy bed and- go into thy, house."

There were two groups of peo- ple present while this double mir gold was being performed:some scribes, and the other, larger group which the evangelist calls “the multitude." The scribes were, as a group, intelligent and

less quick to perceive, but also, therefore, less inclined to be cri- tical, and more ready to accept what they saw, with faith. '

Notice how differently these two groups of people reacted. The scribes saw more clearly what was implied in our Lord’s words and actions. They knew that the forgiving of sins was an action which belonged to God, and they concluded immediately that He was implicitly claiming to be God. Their thoughts, as in» terpreted by St. Mark, were some thing like this: “...he blasphem— eth. Who can forgive sins, but God only?"

This incident is a good illustra— tion of the maxim that more shall be"enpected of him to whom more has been given. The multitude saw no more than that our Lord was claiming to be a great man for some reason granted extraor- dinary lawns by God. And they were ready to accept His claim.

The scribes saw more. They re cognized that He was claiming to be God Himself. And they were not willing to accept His claim. The more one understands, the more difﬁcult and meritorious it is to make an actof faith.
