Mr. and Mrs. 0. C. Belt of Col- umbus, Ohio, gave a dinner party at the Hotel Angelbiit, Orlando. Florida. last week for Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin White. honoring Ben's sou: birthday anniversary. sixty fellow horsemen and friends at- tended. Ben White has trained and driven many of the greatest trotters in the world. He was born in Canada but started taking care of race horses when 18 years of age and has been connected with horses ever since. He has won many of the principal stakes in- cluding the Hamblefonian and is still active and still races horses and wins with them. The Orlando track in Florida is named the Ben White Raceway in his honor.

The above and horses look like a mighty impres- sive outfit that should win a big slice of the purses the coming sea- son. It is well known that Mr. Camp was not pleased with Pthe way his fast horses were trained or his colts last winter and spring. and we are confident that there will be a big change in the sum- maries this year. Scotch .Victor,l. 2.00 U5. was lame most of last spring and partially lame through- out the aeason, but Joe gave him his record and in doing. so won from two of the fastest three-yesr- olds of the year. He is going ess- ier with his two-year-olds than they are in Florida and elsewhere, but should have fewer breakdowns in training by doing so. We re- member last year a two-year-old out of Jane Azof1' 1.5914 that was stepping miles in 2.11 this time and was the wonder of the whole harness horse world but we didn't notice her summaries later on.

Last week we referred in this column to the Standard-bred stal- lion Parkside 2.2lV4. that had been brought from California by the late W. A. Brennan and was standing for service in Charlottetown. We did not know at the time that the man in charge was William Bate- man of this city but we had a call from "Billy" yesterday and de- spite his being weli over 80 years of age his memory is excellent and he is in splendid shape physically. Billy worked for the late Hon. George E. Hughes in the early 90's when the writer was also a drug clerk with Mr. Hughes and we formed a great friendship. He has always been a wonderful man with horses and has shown many chom- pions and prize winners in the ring. He was well acquainted with such outstanding drivers as the late Ronnie Steele, ex-Mayor P. S. Brown, Jimmie Houghton and such horsemen as George I-landrahan, who with Ronnie Steele could turn out a horse about as perfectly as anybody in the business. Billy's particular favorite in later years was the trotter Lustlcia 2.13 when she was owned by the late C. H Chandler.

Gluncing through the Year Book we noticed many great races that took place at Covehead Track un- der the management of Charlie Willis. One of these that made

Billy Mcvay (W. Craig) 2-3-2, Moneymaker 3-2-3. Miss Knox 4-5- 4, Jerry Lee Volo 5-4-5. Time, 2.09 M5. 2.11 U5, 2.12. Colonel Dan had been owned by Alex Stevenson and R. H. Mcxlnnon, Rock Elm, N. S.. and is was that fall that he was sold to Bob Ryan of Houlton, Me. He was sired by Calumet Fin- go 2. 2.00.5 and his dam was the noted race mare Nancy Carroll 2.08, by Red Ace 2.1039. She had been imported to Chatha'm, N. 13., and was bred to Calumet Fingo. At the end of that season his earnings were 33,864. and since then in Bob's ownership they have increased to 525,785. He is being prepped up for another campaign this season.

It wasn't all the work of teenagers . jeeps. trucks and cars were used to trssusport full grown men to the scene of their crime. The day after Xmas a jeep left parked on an in- cline slipped its moorings and slid into a spring where several men were on a kuling spree among spawning trout. Judging from the signs they had one sweet time get- ting ohst Jeep out. I'm being per- fectly truthful when I say that I wouldn't begrudge fifty dollars but of my own pocket to have had the luck to runilnto this particular gang of poac-hers in the act of com- mitting such a depreciation.

At anotiher spot that showed un- mistakable signs of sustained abusc I inquired of a lady, who lived near a lane leading to the stream. if she had noticed any cars driv- ing down to the brook. "since you mentioned it" was her reply. "I saw a dark, half ton truck driving down to the edge of the woods one morning just as it was bright e- nough to see fairly well and won- dared what their business could be." Someone had made not one but half a dozen trips to those trout springs. No one has come for- ward with any information suffi- cient for a court case allihough I know that some to whom I have talked could give me the necessary dope. This winter I talked toa man Who lives within 10 chains of a noted sea spring. It had been well patronized. A man sized hole had been cut in the ice and furnished "with a block of stove wood to usc as a seat and heavy bushes hauled I there for a windbreak. And yet the: man who lives almost within a stone's throw from this spring says: he hasn't the foggiesr. idea of who, the parties are who have been al-. lcgedly lifting the three and four pound trout out of this same hole

If it were not that some trout remain in the sea for A years before venturing back into' fresh water we'd have none left by now. The Week at S.D.U.

' The first extra-mural debate in which St. Dunstan's took part was held on Nov. 5, 1938. under the chairmanship of Mr. Somerled Trainor. Since this debate of the St. Thomas Debating Society with a local team, the progression has been steadily onward and upward until the winning ad the Dominion finals in Ottawa last year. Once before that in 1950, a team ad- vanced to the Dominion finals, af- ter winning the Eastern Canada title, only to be defeated by the narrowest of margins. Last year's feat by Wally Reid and Allan Mac- Donald, was one which brought a tremendous amount of well-deserv- ed prestige and honor to the de- haters, their college and Prov- ince, to their moderator Father Cass and to Mr. Brendon O'Grady.

This year, as yet, chances of such an illustrious success are more remote. Although St. Dun- stan's has lost one debate, none of the other Maritime universities has won all three of their required debates. Even if there were a chance of a debate-off with an- other universlty for the Eastern Canada title, time would be very scarce as the Dominion finals are scheduled for Feb. 27. The local executive was prepared for, and desirous of, a debate with Acadia before Christmas, but due to the impossibility of their (Acadiatsi having a debate at the time and the laxity of the Regional Execu- tive in Wolfville, it was not until this late date that the debates were run off. opportunity to debate in South Africa because of an invitation that was extended to Canadian stu- dents by those in South Africa. This was made possible by the or- ganization which St. Dunstan's has recently voted to re-join, the National Federation of Canadian University Students (N.F'.C.U.S.).

Tuesday night at Acadia, Em- mett Roche and Dick Wedge lost their debate, on, what one Judge made quite clear, a mere techni- cality. Emmett, an accomplished and overwhelmingly - logical speaker, was victorious last year over Mt. A. Dick Wedge, although taking a first try at M.ID.L. de- bating. proved his natural ability in a trial debate, and was chosen for this team. Both he and Em- mett turned in a performance any debater would be proud of. and all agreed, carried high the standard of SDI). debaters.

In the Alumni Auditorium on Thursday night, Cyril Mclsaac and Cialr.Caliaghan, won over Mt. A. in a closely contested debate. The split-decision was given to the uphoiders of the negative side of the resolution, "that this House accepts with confidence the lead- ership of the U.S. in the UN. or-

ganization". Messrs. Mclsaac and Callaghan presented the argu- ments of their speeches more

coherently and logically than did the visitors. but the latter made a great comeback in their rebuttals. An appreciative audience of nearly 400 thoroughly enjoyed this de- bate and their presence was an encouraging sign of the interest of local people in this phase of col- lege activity. Mr. Ronald Doucet, in the absence of Mr. O'Grady. capably fulfilled the position of chairman while the decision was rendered by judges. Hon. Mr. Alex Mathieson, Lt. Col. Leo F. Mac- Donald and Mr. Wilfred Driscoll.

For their fourteenth straight victory, the first basketball team beat st. Thomas University 84-42 in the college gym last Saturday evening. The lack of effective and organized opposition had the ef- fect of disorganizing the Saints and as a result the game was not as interesting as usual. The visi- tors returned a stronger attack in the last quarter to get 22 of their 42 points.

Tuesday night, the Abbies were the losers, when. in an Island lea- gue game they were trounced 86-45. Reardon once again led the scor- ing list followed by ."ete Dunphy and his 15 point top performance of the season. Gus Dorais. Johnny Taylor and Bob Mooney were the next high scorers.

The Saints number of wins was jacked to 18 on Wednesday night when the Air Force crash-landed 96-38. Since they lost to St. F. X. in a game last year, the Saints have climbed to 24 wins in 24 games.
