The New Brunswick Bxhibition.

Tue attendance at the Exhibition to-day was, notwiihstanding . the disagreeable weather, surprisingly large. The exhibits in all departments’ were better arranged than on the day of opening, and spectators could more easily and satisfactorily ex- amine the . SPLENDID DISPLAY OF NEW

The exhibit

f. manufactured goods is the grandst ever witnessed in the Maritime Provinces. Al! branches of industry are fully represented. Entering the Exhibi- tion palace, the first thing to meet theeyeisa display of the mineral products of the Province. To the left is a Gne collection of tobaccos and the various materials used by the smoker. Next is the hardware de- partment, in which the exhibit of Mr. S. R. Foster, nail and tack manufacturer, stands most prominent. Then comes a good collection of carpenters’ and block- makers’ handiwork, among which is a num- ber of north pole refrigerators manufac- tured by \fessrs. Lockerby & Clarke, two former Charlottetonians. Further on there is a fine show of leather and harness, and following tls is a collection of stones and marble mantles, manufactured by Mr. Isaac J.. Harris, ete. On the south-east side of the interior is the grand collection of stoves exhibited by Mr. Charles Fawcett of Sackville, N. B. It consista of over one hundred different patterns of stuves, ranges, etc., aml is pronounced to be the best exhib:t made by any New Brunswick manufacturer. The chief attraction in the centre of the palace is THE FRUIT TROPHY, which is decked with various samples of fruit and flowers grown in New Bruns- wick. The DISPLAY OF DRY GOODS

by Messrs. Manchester Robinson & Allison, Carriages and Sleighs, by various manufac- turers, ancl organs and pianos by George R. Bent, is very tine. The remainder of the base is given to horticulture and fruit. On the gallery isa splendid show in departments such as Lady’s Fancy Work. and Domes- tic Goods in which Parks & Sons, are the most prominent exhibitors—Toilet Goods, Furniture, Leather Goods, Canned Goods, Cornice Curtains, Boots and Shoes, ete. The most attractive exhibit on the gallery is the furniture manufactured by Messrs.

Stewart & White consisting of a number of elegant bedroom sets of marvellous

beauty. bBefere the inaugaration of the National Policy, Messrs. Stewart & White, were large importers of American furniture which was prized and readily purchased on account of its beauty of style and finish. But when the N. P., came into force, they discontinued importing and commenced manufacturing. The trade flourished, and the furniture manufactured by this firm to-day, is pronounced to be superior to any which can be imported at the same cost. THE ART GALLERY

is well filled; but the work of Artis not up toa fair standard. The oil paintings of Miss Alley attract a good deal of attention and compare favorably with the gen- erality of those on exhibition.

TLS MOST INTERESTING AND IMPORTANT

part of the exhibit within the palace are the cereals, vegetables and dairy products. In grain, the Island quota is the centre of at- traction. Our white and black oats are beyond comparison the best. In wheat, our samples are admitted to be superior, although the New Brunswick exhibit is highly creditable to that Province. The barley shown by New Brunswick farmers would not sell at any price in the Island. It is undoubtedly the poorest barley that ever came under our notice. With one or two exceptions, the exhibit of oais was in- ferior. New Brunswick makes a very good showin beans and buckwheat, none of which ave among the Island exhibits. The sample of peasin the P. E. Island exhibit is pronounced to be excellent. Althongh the Island has not been in a position to put her best feot foremost in

on this occasion, owing to the early date at which selection had to be made, and they are somewhat inferior, yet, we think,our farmers will, under any circumstances, have hard work to carry off honors from New Bruns- wick in the production of vegetables. Tur- nips, mangolds, sugar and table beets, carrots, parsnips, squashes, pumpkins, etc., are exhibited in great quantities and are splendi i specimens. . Our mangolds and vegetables look well, but New Brunswick has scored a point against us in this de- partment.

THE DAIRY INTEREST of New Brunswick is well répresented by a large number of really choice specimens of butter and cheese. The sooner our farm- ers realize the important fact that first-class butter and cheese cannot be produced with- out the introduction of factories, the better it will be for the Province. The show of HORNED CATTLE

is large; but, on the whole,.is decidedly inferior to the stock shown at our Island fairs. With the exception of a nice herd of -Herefords shown by a farmer from

Sackville, there is nothing deserving of |

particular mention in this department. Many 5f the cattle are of the Channel Is- lands breeds, which do not add many at- tractions to the show ; although, no doubt, their {ine qualities for diary purposes have materially assisted our neighbors in mak- ing such a good exhibit of butter and cheese.

Our Shorthorn cows and heifer and Ayre- shire ll take the lead of everything here; and we learn that eertificates of supericrity have been awarded each of them.

The Challengerwas called into the ring to-day with the prize horses for agricul- tural purposes, and two fine Percheron horses, imported from the United States.

The Island carriage horses jhave to be taken out of their quarters fre quently, in response to earnest requests of visitors, They will be judged to-morrow. Oy course they cannot compete for prizes, but their superiority over New Brunswick horses is admitted on all sides.

Messrs. Longworth and Boswell’s sheep, irrived on Tuesday morning, in bad condition, having been badly shipped, and detained in ransit, and the bad weather of yesterlay, not siving them a chance to improve their appear- ince. They appear to good advantage under the circumstances and are selling at good prices,

The show of jigs is very good. It consists chiefly of Berkshires and cross breeds. Kach of our counties can we think produce better porkers, although not in such large numbers.

Mr. Joun Burigr, a retired teacher, state of mind, and under the Doctor's care. On Wednesday morning he left his home im this city, and was seen by several per- sons walking towards Victoria Park. As he did not return, his family became alarmed; search was instituted, and about four o'clock yesterday afternoon, his dead body was found in a clump of bushes to the south of the pond in the Park, with a ragged jagged gash in his throat, extending from Adam’s apple upwards and outwards for about two inches, and about twoinches in depth. <A razer covered with blood, was found near by, inclosed ina common case. It was, undoubtedly, the instrument of death. But whether it was, after the dreadful deed, re- turned to the case by the dying man _ him- self, or whether it was put back by some person who found the body, is not known. Mr. Butler was a temperate, quiet man, of yood character.

Last evening an inquest was held before Coroner Beer. The evidence elicited was in effect as stated above ;-and the belief ex- pressed by some of the witnesses was that the deceased came to his death by his own hand, while in an unsound state of mind. The razor found is like one he had. The following is the verdict of the Coroner’s Jury :—

‘*The deceased came to his death by a wound on the right side ; but the evidence does not show whether it was inflicted by himself or otherwise.”

Exhibition Notes.

Entries are pouring in to-day, especially in the Live Stock classes. The cattle show grounds present a stirring aspect. Work- men are busily employed preparing the field for the grand reception of* the best display of horses, cattle, sheep and pigs ever before exhibited in this Province. The Exhibition Building is now ready for the proper arrangement of exhibits in the different departments. Parties requiring space for bulky articles should make im- mediate application for space. The field adjoining the building is well arranged for the reception of farm implements, &c.

THE ingenuity displayed in Mr. Quirk’s ad- vertisement is recognized by all.

Tue Rev. Dr. Leeming lectured to large audiences in Boston last week, on Daniel O'Connell and Mary Queen of Scots. The Boston Pilot says the Rev. Dr. is *‘ a powerful and eloquent speaker.”

Mr. Joun Newson and wife, returned last evening from a trip to Boston via Halifax, and back via St. John. They seen both the Halifax and St John Exhibitions, with their attendant attractions.

Sr. James’ Cuurcu.—The Rev. Thomas Duncan, of Halifax, will preach this evening at 7.30, in preparation for the communion to be dispensed on Sabbath next. He will also assist in the services on the Sabbath day.

Counctttok Koveuan has resigned his seat at the City Council. William Murphy, Esq., for many years the able representative of Ward 1 will be a candidate for the seat vacated by Councilior Koughan. If elected, the electors¥@f Ward 2 will have in Mr. Mur phy an able, intelligent and energetic repre- sentative.
