Lord Salisbury and Imperial Fed- eration.

The ground taken by Lord Salisbury in respect to an Imperial Federation Conven- tion is somewhat different from that reported

Cuicaco, July 25.—Mrs. Mattie E. Cowles had her divorce case disposed of in one of the shortest periods on record. She filed her bill yesterday. To-day her hus- band, John T. Cowles, made anawer. At 9 a.m. Judge Altgeld heard the ‘case in chambers, and at 2 p. m. a decree was en- tered, Cowles isa manufacturer of fire escapes, and said to be worth $150,000. The entire proceedings were kept strictly private. Mrs Cowles was awarded the custody of her two children, aged 11 and 13 years, and it is understood that the de- fendant agreed to pay a liberal alimony,

New York, July 31.—John L. Sullivan was arrested to-night at Vanderbilt Hotel by Inspector Brynes and Detective Ser- geant Adams, The arrest was made on a requisition from Governor Lowry of Miss- issippi, charging Sullivan with prize fight- ing. He was locked up at police head- quarters.

Battimore, July 31.—Columbus O. D. Lee, of Hoffman, Lee & Co , was a passen- ger on the steamer Alliance, from New Pork for Rio. Ina letter from the latter place he gives a graphic account of a fire on ship-board. They left Pernambuco Sunday, July 7. On the followiug night fire was discovered between decks, near the engine room, in 1,000 bales of cotton and 400 barrels of rum, the first intimation being an explosion of rum. Bahia was reached on the 9th, the crew being kept at work threwing overboard the cotton and rum, and the coal heavers were kept there at the point of the pistol. A hole was drilled througa the iron partition and the carpen- ter held the water pipe, with the result that he has become blind. The passengers behaved splendidly, nvt a man, woman or child betraying the least fear. Eight hun- dred and four dollars were contributed to the oflicers and crew. > -_— +o
